Stars To Support Anti-Death Penalty Awards Dinner

Advocacy organization Death Penalty Focus is to hold its annual Awards Gala on Thursday, May 21, with some high profile guests slated to attend.

The 18th Annual Awards Dinner will honor Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico; John Van de Kamp, former Attorney General of California; Nancy Miller, creator of TV series Saving Grace; and several others. Guests will include Six Feet Under’s James Cromwell, Mike Farrell and Amy Brenneman, and the host committee includes Alec Baldwin, William Baldwin, Jackson Browne, Morgan Fairchild, Danny Glover, Lily Tomlin and Noah Wyle.

Founded in 1988, Death Penalty Focus is dedicated to the abolition of capital punishment through public education; grassroots and political organizing; original research; media outreach; local, state and nationwide coalition building; and the education of religious, legislative and civic leaders about the death penalty and its alternatives.

Forest Whitaker Gets Behind Mandela Day

Forest Whitaker joined a host of celebrities at an event yesterday to raise awareness of Mandela Day, an annual celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and a global call to action for people to recognize their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them.

Yesterday’s event was held in Los Angeles and was attended by stars such as Morgan Freeman, Clint Eastwood, Marisa Tomei, Sharon Stone, Noah Wyle, Alfre Woodard and Viola Davis.

Nelson Mandela has been making an imprint on the world for 67 years, beginning in 1942 when he first started to campaign for the human rights of every South African. The annual celebration is being created to inspire others to embrace Nelson Mandela’s values as they seek to improve their lives through service to their communities. 46664 and the Nelson Mandela Foundation are calling on people around the world to support the creation of an official Mandela Day, to be held annually on July 18, Mr. Mandela’s birthday.

Noah Wyle Wants Obama To Change Health System

ER star Noah Wyle is pushing for health reforms in the US.

The television star is calling on President Obama to introduce universal healthcare in America, and plans to spend some time – now that ER has finished – pushing for a health service for all, similar to those in the U.K. and Canada.

“I’m holding out hope, that we’re going off the air just as this administration is going to usher in some kind of universal healthcare coverage,” he said. “So we can start valuing health as a human right and not a privilege. Hopefully I can segue from my previous job into assisting with it.”

Project Save Our Surf's First Annual Surfathon and Celebrity Gala

On Sunday April 5, professional surfers and celebrities will take part in the Project ‘Save Our Surf’ Surf-a-Thon and Celebrity Gala to benefit Non-Profit Oceana, an international ocean conservation group.

Launched by actress Tanna Frederick and surfer Shaun Tomson, Project Save Our Surf (Project SOS) is an amazing organization that rally’s surfers and non-surfers to get involved in giving back while helping to save our oceans.

Celebrities such as Michelle Rodriguez (“Lost”), David Chokachi (“Baywatch”), Rob Machado, and World Champion of International Professional Surfing Peter “P.T.” Townend, will raise money by asking fans to sponsor their commitment to surf during a five-hour shift. The Surfathon will take place from 10:00am to 3:00pm at Ocean Park beach in Santa Monica. In addition to watching the celebrities hang-ten, other activities at the event include Tae Kwon Do demonstrations, environmental guest speakers, face painting, team relay races, yoga sessions, free massages, raffle prizes and musical performance by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders.

Oceania To Benefit From Celebrity Surf-A-Thon

Project SOS – Save Our Surf – will hold a special charity event in April to raise money for one of the world’s premier environmental organizations.

The Project SOS Surfathon is a way for surfers, non-surfers, families, and communities to become involved in giving a little time and having fun while helping out in their own backyard, the Pacific Ocean. The event will benefit Oceana, the world’s largest organization dedicated to marine conservation.

World champion surfer Shaun Thomson and ‘Hollywood Dreams’ actress Tanna Frederick will co-host the event, which will be held on Sunday, April 5th, 2009, and will begin at 10 a.m. and run until 4 p.m., with tons of activities, food, and surf!
