Cyndi Lauper and her True Colors Fund were presented with the 2011 “Spirit of Youth” award from the National Runaway Switchboard (NRS) last week, recognizing their work and dedication for helping to keep America’s runaway, homeless and at-risk youth safe and off the streets.

The ceremony took place at NRS’ annual “Spirit of Youth” benefit at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago.

Last year, Lauper flipped the switch to turn the Empire State Building green for National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM). She also recorded a public service announcement promoting NRS’ services. Additionally, Lauper has been supporting the end of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning (GLBTQ) homelessness through her True Colors Fund.

Cyndi Lauper played a show in Westbury, NY, on Wednesday, and asked fans to support a very special charity initiative.

Prior to the show, Cyndi requested that concertgoers brought food to benefit rock CAN roll, an organization that collaborates with rock concerts, schools, corporations, and private individuals to collect healthy & nutritious non-perishable food for distribution to local agencies and into the hands of children, seniors and families who live with hunger and in poverty.

“Food banks around the country are reporting difficulties in getting food donated and keeping up with the demand due to the current state of our economy,” she wrote on her website prior to the show. "So, they need our help and it is really simple for us to do something.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) will join millions of lesbian gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and allies by participating in Spirit Day and wearing purple on October 20, 2011.

Wearing purple on this day symbolizes support for LGBT people and against bullying of LGBT teens.

GLAAD is working with organizations including the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the PACER Center, GLSEN, GSA Network, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), PFLAG and The Trevor Project as part of National Bullying Prevention Month to inspire Americans to wear purple on Spirit Day.

Cyndi Lauper To Open Shelter On Friday

Cyndi Lauper’s homeless shelter for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth will open in New York on Friday, September 9.

The idea behind the True Colors Residence in Harlem was conceived by Lauper, her publicist Lisa Barbaris, and Colleen Jackson, the executive director of the West End Intergenerational Residence, an Upper West Side facility which helps young families and older low-income adults.

“Kids are coming out in greater numbers as they see themselves accepted and represented on TV and in movies, but they’re still being kicked out of their homes or running away and living on the streets,” said Lauper, who funded the facility through her True Colors Fund. “We need to make sure we’re taking care of them.”

Rob Lowe has joined Valspar Paint and Habitat for Humanity International in unveiling Valspar Hands for Habitat, an initiative to auction the handprints of celebrities and notable personalities to benefit Habitat for Humanity’s relief efforts in Haiti.

Habitat has set a goal to serve 50,000 families impacted by Haiti’s 2010 earthquake, helping move them toward safe, secure and permanent housing. Those donating to the auction created their handprints using Valspar paint.

Last Thursday night, the DKMS 5th Annual Gala raised a record $2.5 million to support the fight against leukemia and other blood related cancers. The money raised at the star-studded gala, which took place at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City, will help register nearly 30,000 bone marrow donors and work to save lives worldwide.

Katharina Harf, COO of DKMS Americas presented an award to Rihanna in recognition for her tireless work in the fight against leukemia. “Anyone can be affected by leukemia,” said Rihanna. ""It is the number one disease children in the U.S. die of and we can change that. I encourage people to become bone marrow donors with DKMS. If we have more donors, we can save more lives."

Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors Fund is supporting a new building construction in central Harlem that broke ground at the beginning of this year.

The shelter, called “True Colors Residence” (TCR), will consist of modern studio apartments and community space for thirty 18-24-year-old LGBTs of New York City’s homeless population.

“Our primary goal is to provide a physically and emotionally safe and supportive environment,” said Lauper, “that will empower our young residents to be the self-loving, happy, and successful individuals they were meant to be.”

Cyndi Lauper To Open Homeless Shelter For LGBT Youth

Cyndi Lauper is putting her celebrity and connections together to open Manhattan’s first shelter for homeless lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.

The housing complex will be located in Harlem and will be named The True Colors Residence. The residence is set to open in winter of 2011. Young people between 18 and 24 will get a place to live to help them get back on their feet, and the residence will be located on W. 154th St near Frederick Douglas Boulevard.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun With Charity Single

X Factor star Lucie Jones is aiding Cancer Research UK through proceeds raised from the re-recording of Cyndi Lauper’s track “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”

A total of 20 stars – including former Atomic Kitten Liz McClarnon, glamour model Danielle Lloyd and former “EastEnders” actress Lucy Benjamin – raised their voices to bring awareness to breast cancer. Hundreds of local UK women affected by cancer are also featured on the track.

The popular single was originally released in 1984 and was a huge hit for Lauper. Music star Sonique is supporting the re-recording. Her participation marks her first time performing since having her own cancer battle last June.

Estée Lauder has teamed up with Lady Gaga to raise money for AIDS research.

Mac’s Viva Glam has added two new shades of lipstick to their line; one for Lady Gaga and one for Cyndi Lauper. All proceeds from Viva Glam are donated to assist in AIDS research through the Mac AIDS Fund. Within the first four days of their release, Mac had already sold 30,000 of the new lipstick colors.

A galaxy of stars turned out to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 91st birthday in New York during the weekend, with proceeds going to one of the South African legend’s charities.

Bruce Springsteen, Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder and many more appeared at the Radio City Music Hall on Saturday, July 19, with money raised going to 46664, Mandela’s campaign to help raise Global awareness of AIDS/HIV. 46664 aims to highlight the emergency of AIDS/HIV through unique live events and music related initiatives.

Mandela himself was unable to attend the event, but did send a video message in which he said “It is on your hands to create a better world for all who live in it.” President Barack Obama also appeared via video, saying that Mandela’s life “teaches us that the impossible can be done, but only if people have the courage to make change happen.”
