Stars Contribute To Celebrity Charity Bake Book

Celebrities, chefs and politicians from the UK are contributing their favourite baking recipes to the Celebrity Bake Book which supports The Ben Kinsella Trust.

Ben Kinsella was knifed to death in June 2008 in Islington. He was just 16 years old. His sister, Brooke Kinsella (who is an actress and was in EastEnders) and her family created The Ben Kinsella Trust to raise awareness about the growing problem of knife crime.

Later on this year Brooke will be launching a project to take a knife crime awareness exhibition to schools throughout the country. The intention is to educate children of all ages about the consequences of knife crime and what it can do to a family. The trust aims to educate children as young as primary school age in the difference between right and wrong and against ever picking up a weapon, be it through peer pressure, fear or simply believing it is cool. The Trust also hopes, one day, to build a youth centre in Ben’s name in Islington to help protect, support and nurture the kids on our streets.

Jane Asher Supports Bowel Cancer Charity Book Swap

British screen legend Jane Asher has thrown her weight behind an initiative by Bowel Cancer UK that wants you to dig out your favourite books and hold a charity book swap.

Hosting a Big Book Swap for charity is easy. Hold one at home or at work and invite friends, family and colleagues to swap their favourite books. Why not hold a competition with colleagues submitting their favourite books and guessing whose is whose – there may be some surprises! Or, if you’re part of a book club, use one of the meetings already in the diary. A suggested donation between £5 and £10 from those attending will ensure you raise lots for Bowel Cancer UK.

When asked what her favorite book is, Jane chose Richard Dawkins’ The Blind Watchmaker: “This is the first of Dawkins’ books that I read and perhaps his greatest. I thought – like many people I suspect – that I knew what evolution was, but it was reading this book that really brought home the wonder and complexity of it. It’s always reassuring, when life seems just too sad or tough, to remind myself just how infinitesimal mankind is in the scheme of things and just how short a fraction of time we have been – or will be – on this planet.”

British Stars Pledge Brains To Parkinson's Research

British newsreader Jeremy Paxman and actress Jane Asher are spearheading a campaign to encourage people to donate their brains after death to Parkinson’s Disease research.

The Parkinson’s Disease Society wants to double the 1,000 people on its donor register by the end of the year to boost scientist’s understanding of the disease.

“Scientific research on brains both with and without Parkinson’s is essential,” said Asher, who is president of the society. “It’s vital that we secure more potential donors as this will help us move closer to a cure for what can be a debilitating and distressing condition.”
