Stand Up To Cancer Raises Over $81 Million

Stand Up To Cancer has announced that more than $81 million has been pledged so far in connection with its star-studded September 7 roadblock fundraising telecast to accelerate ground-breaking research and bring new treatments to patients as quickly as possible, including pediatric cancer patients through the creation of a new pediatric cancer research “Dream Team.”

Random Act Of Kindness By Robert Pattinson

Twilight star Robert Pattinson showed that random acts of kindness make a difference this week when he bought a new guitar for a homeless busker in Los Angeles.

The star had given money to the busker, then returned a few minutes later with a brand new acoustic guitar for the man.

“We were gobsmacked when he handed the acoustic guitar to the tramp,” British man Luke Jones told The Sun newspaper. "Robert quickly went back to his car and drove off.

The Twilight star used his acceptance speech at last weekend’s Teen Choice Awards to highlight the new Cancer Bites charity initiative, which launches this October.

Drawing from media properties such as Twilight, HBO’s True Blood, CW’s The Vampire Diaries and MTV’s Teen Wolf — CANCER BITES has assembled a powerful team of partners, experts and celebrity charity spokespeople to educate the public about the prevalence of blood cancers. Stars Support Petition Against Sex Trafficking Of Children

ECPAT UK and The Body Shop were joined by celebrity campaign supporter Martine McCutcheon on 12th May 2011 to hand over the Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People Petition to the British prime minister at 10 Downing Street.

Signed by an incredible 735,889 people – including stars such as Ricky Gervais, Sienna Miller, Nicole Kidman, and Elizabeth Hurley – the petition is the largest to be received by the coalition and calls for greater protection of child victims of trafficking. Other celebrity supporters included Matt LeBlanc, Robert Pattinson, Joanna Lumley, Yoko Ono, Naomi Campbell, Sir Ben Kingsley, Claudia Winkleman, Lily Cole, Pixie Lott and Craig David.

Robert Pattinson Raises Charity Cash For Japan

The Yoshiki Foundation America has called on some of its celebrity friends – including Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon – for a very special charity auction to benefit victims of the tsunami disaster in Japan.

According to the charity’s website, “Yoshiki Foundation America is a California non-profit, public benefit corporation founded in 2010 by Japanese musician Yoshiki of the multi-million-selling rock band X Japan. A number of personal experiences brought Yoshiki to the launch of his foundation beginning with the loss of his own father when he was just a teenager. Like so many people around the world, he read news accounts and was deeply moved by the devastating effects of the 1995 earthquake in Kobe; in 2009, he paid an emotional visit to an orphanage in Sichuan, still reeling in its recovery, with so many children still displaced and orphaned. Additionally and as a tribute to Yoshiki’s late X Japan band mate, Hide, who embraced the support of children with bone marrow disease, The Yoshiki Foundation provides funds to offer assistance through music to children with this debilitating illness. Music is what kept Yoshiki moving forward with his life after his father’s passing, and bringing music to children in need is at the heart of his Foundation. While he was thankful he was in a position to donate several pianos and other musical instruments to the schools affected by the Kobe and Sichuan earthquakes, as well as having the children in the local orphanages as his personal guests at local X Japan concerts, he wanted to do more, something permanent and enduring.”

The new auction – which will go live on April 17 – features T-shirts signed by Robert Pattinson, Reese Witherspoon and James Franco, comics signed by Stan Lee, the Red Hot Chili Peppers' MTV Album of the Year Award – donated by Anthony Kiedis – and items signed by Yoshiki.

Robert Pattinson has put his hand up for charity – by joining other celebrities to support The Body Shop’s Stop Sex Trafficking of Children and Young People campaign.

The Twilight actor has joined stars such as Sienna Miller, Naomi Campbell, Jamie Oliver, Katie Melua, Ben Kingsley and Joanna Lumley in tracing around their own hands to promote the campaign’s online petition to stop human trafficking.

“Human trafficking exists in countries all over the world, not just the poorest,” explains a release from the campaign. "According to the United Nations, it is the third-largest and fastest-growing criminal industry in the world, with more than 1.2 million children and young people trafficked every year.

The star’s artwork – a balloon decorated in his own unique style – is currently going under the hammer to benefit PACT, (Parents and Abducted Children Together), an international, non-profit organisation, registered in the USA and the UK. Its initial mission was to fight parental child abduction across frontiers by raising awareness of a growing, but little-known, problem and by advocating solutions. PACT has now broadened its mission to include the location and retrieval of all children who go missing. It works closely with the police, government, and other non-profit organizations. Robert Pattinson has signed a guitar for charity.

The Twilight star, currently to be seen in the new romantic drama Remember Me, was browsing through the eclectic inventory of Norman’s Rare Guitars in Tarzana, CA, and couldn’t resist picking up a brand new Fender Telecaster and started to play. As a very talented musician and easily recognizable celebrity, it wasn’t long before store owner Norman Harris noticed Pattinson. Harris, whose store routinely attracts movie stars and Hollywood power brokers alike, struck up a casual conversation with young Pattinson when the thought occurred that this was an opportunity too good to pass up.

Harris has, for many years, worked very closely with LA’s Midnight Mission, a charitable organization that provides basic necessities to the homeless, including counseling, education, training and job placement across the greater Los Angeles basin. The high-end clientele of the vintage guitar store allows Harris access to some of the most popular celebrities in town, including Tom Petty, Richie Sambora, Jackson Browne, Los Lobos and REO Speed Wagon — all of whom have played in charity concerts coordinated by Harris on behalf of the Midnight Mission. Besides setting a record for the most money raised by a disaster relief telethon, the charity’s Hope for Haiti album – featuring performances on the telethon — became the largest one-day album pre-order in iTunes history.

Two kisses with the actor were sold for over US$20,000 at the annual Cinema Against AIDS gala for the American Foundation for AIDS Research.

“If it goes well, maybe it will turn to something more!” joked Pattinson when auction host Harvey Weinstein introduced the opportunity.
