Obituary: Ed McMahon's Charity Work

Comedian, game show host, announcer, and television personality Ed McMahon passed away last week, after a long illness.

Known for his work as Johnny Carson’s announcer on The Tonight Show from 1962 to 1992, McMahon was also host of the talent show Star Search from 1983 to 1995 and co-host with Dick Clark of TV’s Bloopers and Practical Jokes from 1982 to 1986. He was also well-known for hosting Jerry Lewis’ annual Labor Day Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy.

Although he suffered from ill health in his later years, McMahon still found time to carry out charity work. He was honored by the Kayne Eras Center for his work with children and education, and also attended the The California Disabled Veteran Business Alliance’s Annual Salute to Veterans Day Breakfast last year. McMahon also hosted charity golf tournaments over the years.

Jon Voight and Charles Durning are two of the expected celebrities for The California Disabled Veteran Business Alliance’s Annual Salute to Veterans Day Breakfast.

The event, taking place on Friday, November 7, in Los Angeles, will honor 200 Vietnam vets, 100 active duty soldiers -just back from Iraq and Afghanistan – and 100 disabled vets of all wars.

Business and community leaders, including many celebrity veterans will be in attendance. Some of the expected attendees are DB Sweeney, Daniel Baldwin, Hip Hop artist David Banner, & Maxim Magazine’s ‘woman of the year’ Monica Hansen, Tommy Lasorda, Hal Linden, Gary Busey, Ed McMahon, Connie Stevens, Peter Marshal, Howard Dell (Olympic Medalist / Young & the Restless), Jack McGee, Ernie Hudson, Leyla Milani (Deal or No Deal), Ron Masak, Universal recording artist and USO pin-up girl Mayra Veronica and many more.

The breakfast event runs from 9-11 A.M. at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel in Los Angeles. Tom Arnold Roasts For Charity

Friday, September 12, saw the sixth annual Tom Arnold Celebrity Roast take place at the Beverly Hills Hotel.

The star-studded event raised over $1 million to benefit the Kayne Eras Center program of the Exceptional Children’s Foundation, and honored Academy Award-winning producer and New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch.

“Steve was a great sport for an amazing cause,” said Arnold. “We all shared laughs and our support for this phenomenal program.”

Tisch was roasted – which means to make a lighthearted and humorously mocking tribute – by master of ceremonies Tom Arnold, and video roasts were provided by Bob Saget, Will Smith, and Denzel Washington. Celebrities in attendance included Eric Dane, Rosario Dawson, Linda Evangelista, and Rebecca Gayheart-Dane.

The Kayne Eras Center was established in 1980 and is a state of the art, multi-service special education K-12 school and therapy center in Culver City, serving over 550 children, youth and adults and their families annually. The annual Tom Arnold Celebrity Roast has raised money for the facility every year since its inception, and honors individuals for their philanthropic work involving children and education. Previous honorees have included Tom Arnold, James Cameron, Budd Friedman, Leslie Moonves, Ed McMahon, Pat O’Brian, Stephen Shapiro, and Stan Winston.

Steve Tisch is the only person ever to have received both the Lombardi trophy – for his victory in Super Bowl XLII – and an Academy Award – for his work on Forrest Gump. He is extremely active in many different charities throughout Los Angeles, including the Kayne Eras Center.
