Stars Help Young People Beat The Odds

The Children’s Defense Fund-California hosted its 21st Annual Beat the Odds Awards on December 1, honoring John Jimenez, Nancy Kannampuzha, Britany Lewis, Caylin Moore and Jeanette Wright, five incredible Los Angeles area high school students who “beat the odds.”

Children’s Defense Fund President Marian Wright Edelman and Hollywood’s supporters celebrated the high school “stars” for overcoming tremendous personal obstacles in order to achieve academic excellence. Awards were presented to the students by Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Elisabeth Shue, Jurnee Smollett and Rodney Peete.

On Sunday, December 4, 2011, The Trevor Project honored Lady Gaga with the Trevor Hero Award and Google Inc. with the Trevor 2020 Award during “Trevor Live” presented by Audi of America and ING and directed by Adam Shankman.

This high-profile event to benefit the life-saving work of The Trevor Project featured moving performances from Hollywood’s most talented and entertaining performers, including Mary J. Blige, Miley Cyrus, Queen Latifah, LeAnn Rimes, Barrett Foa and the Warblers, Diego Boneta and Julianne Hough, JC Chasez, American Idol contestants Kris Allen and Stefano Langone, Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Darren Criss, Step up Dance, and Amber Riley.

Lady Gaga, in a moving speech delivered from the heart shared that, “I want my fans and people all over the world to know that there is always someone who is listening, but I want them to know that they are listening before it gets too late.” She went on to say about The Trevor Project honor, “This award means more to me than any Grammy ever will.”

On Sunday, December 4, 2011, The Trevor Project will honor Lady Gaga with the Trevor Hero Award and Google Inc. with the Trevor 2020 Award during “Trevor Live” at the Hollywood Palladium.

The annual show benefits the life-saving work of The Trevor Project, a recent honoree of the White House as a Champion of Change for leadership and innovation in suicide prevention.

“Our young people are at the center of a health crisis, and vocal leaders like Lady Gaga and technology leaders like Google Inc. have stepped up to help change our culture,” said David McFarland, Interim Executive Director and CEO of The Trevor Project. “Our honorees are working with The Trevor Project to make a better today and a brighter tomorrow for youth. We are proud to honor Lady Gaga with the Trevor Hero Award and Google Inc. with the Trevor 2020 award for their work to help young people express their true selves with pride.”

Zachary Levi Honored By Operation Smile

Operation Smile, an international children’s medical charity, honored Smile Ambassadors Zachary Levi and Giuliana and Bill Rancic at its 10th annual Smile Gala on September 23, 2011 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The organization honored President of NBC Entertainment Jennifer Salke and her son Henry who was born with a cleft, as well as philanthropist Sue Tsao. Special guests included Operation Smile Ambassadors Roma Downey and Mark Burnett, Billy Bush, Brooke Burke-Charvet and David Charvet, Sharif Atkins and Megan Follows. More than $1.2 million was raised to benefit the organization.

Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft. One in 10 of those children will die before their first birthday. The Smile Gala helps to provide hope and healthy futures for children worldwide. Operation Smile provides free surgery for children suffering from clefts, to heal their smiles and transform their lives.

As reported earlier this week by LookToTheStars.org, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher have been joined by a host of their celebrity friends for a new initiative to fight child sex slavery.

“Child sex slavery is a difficult issue to think about, which makes it all the more important that we do,” remarked Ashton Kutcher. “Real Men do not ever buy children for sex. Period.”

Added Demi Moore: “People don’t realize child sex slavery is a serious problem in the United States. Young girls are victimized in the commercial sex industry every day. No 13-year-old girl chooses to be exploited for sex. Real Men love, care, and protect girls. Real Men don’t buy girls.”

Celebrities To Play Charity Poker In LA This Weekend

A bunch of celebs and famous faces will head to LA this weekend for a charity poker tournament at the Commerce Casino.

The World Poker Tour’s Celebrity Invitational will feature over 100 stars of screen and poker, including Marlon Wayans, Eric Dane, Hank Azaria, Teri Hatcher, Jesse Metcalfe, Michael Vartan, Matt Lillard, Billy Burke, Zachary Quinto, Willie Garson, Benji Madden, Ricki Lake, Shannon Elizabeth, Jennifer Tilly and many more.

The tournament will hit Los Angeles on February 20-21, and proceeds will benefit Chrysalis, a charity dedicated to helping economically disadvantaged and homeless individuals become self-sufficient through employment opportunities. It currently helps more than 2,000 individuals a year change their lives through jobs.

Global Green To Host Star-Studded Pre-Oscar Party

Global Green USA will host its 7th Annual Pre-Oscar Party with CEO Matt Petersen and celebrity co-hosts including Suzy Amis Cameron & James Cameron, Sebastian Copeland, Roland Emmerich, Adrian Grenier, Neil Patrick Harris, Salma Hayek and Zachary Quinto.

The evening will feature special musical performances from Benji & Joel Madden of Good Charlotte, and Mia Maestro.

The theme for this year’s event is “Greener Cities for a Cooler Planet” and will benefit Global Green’s initiatives to promote smart solutions to climate change by creating healthy, green communities. The spectacular show will be held at the Avalon Hollywood on Vine Street on Wednesday, March 3.

Band From TV To Launch New Epilepsy Site At Charity Gig

Band From TV – the celebrity charity music group made up of stars from some of today’s most popular TV shows – is to play a special gig next month to launch a charity website set up by its founding member.

Talk About It was created by Heroes star Greg Grunberg to raise awareness of epilepsy and help educate people the world and end stigmas about seizure disorders. The site features many of his Heroes co-stars and celebrity friends, such as Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, and John Mayer. Grunberg is a longtime supporter of epilepsy causes, an issue that he has been involved with since his son, Jake, was diagnosed with the condition. He is the official spokesperson for the Epilepsy Foundation and Epilepsy Advocate.

Grunberg started the Band From TV – which includes members such as Hugh Laurie, Teri Hatcher, Bonnie Somerville, Hayden Panettiere, Adrian Pasdar, James Denton, Jesse Spencer, and Bob Guiney – after getting a few celebrities to play together at the House Of Blues for charity. The success of that event has led to a number of gigs in the US which have, according to Hugh Laurie, “raised a gargantuan sum of money for charity.” These charities include such as Save the Children, The Art of Elysium, the Child Abuse Prevention Program and the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence through the Band From TV Global Charity Trust. Celebrities To Perform Acts of Love in October

Stars such as Debra Messing, Alfred Molina and Zachary Quinto are gearing up to perform Acts of Love in support of Autism Speaks.

Acts of Love is Autism Speaks’ annual awards reception celebrating those who have made a difference in the Autism Community. The event raises funds and awareness which allows Autism Speaks to continue its work in finding a cure for autism.

International performers and celebrities including Adam Arkin, Benjamin Bratt, Austin Butler and Michael Chiklis, make up some of the cast which will perform an array of readings and quotes for the 7th Annual Acts of Love event. Also taking part are Emmanuelle Chriqui, Gary Cole, Michaela Conlin, Keith David, Carla Gugino, John Heard, Mary McDonnell, CCH Pounder, Amanda Seyfried, Amber Tamblyn and Lynn Whitfield.
