Handbag.com Launches Handbag Amnesty

www.handbag.com and Cancer Research UK have announced a new partnership with the launch of the first ever Handbag Amnesty.

Taking place throughout the month of September – www.handbag.com’s dedicated handbag month – and climaxing in October, the Handbag Amnesty will give women across the country the opportunity to bid for the designer handbag of their favourite celebrity including, just to name a few, Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Dame Shirley Bassey, to raise money to help beat cancer.

www.handbag.com and Cancer Research UK are asking celebrities to make space in their wardrobes by donating one of their designer handbags to the Amnesty. The bags will then be auctioned on eBay from Friday 3rd – Sunday 14th October to tie in with Breast Cancer Awareness month. Open to everyone, all proceeds will go to Cancer Research UK, the largest single funder of research into breast cancer, one of the most common cancers in the UK.

Some of the other celebrities who have donated handbags are America Ferrera, Annie Lennox, Ashlee Simpson, Geri Halliwell, Dame Judi Dench, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Scarlett Johansson.

The Handbag Amnesty, however, is not just about celebrities. www.handbag.com and Cancer Research UK are also asking members of the public to donate a handbag that is still in good condition to their local Cancer Research UK shop. Good handbags always sell like hot cakes in Cancer Research UK’s nationwide chain of charity shops.

Stars Support Oxfam's Darfur Appeal

Oxfam has launched an online celebrity and public auction to raise funds for its $10 million appeal to help victims of the violence in Darfur and Chad.

Actors, musicians and artists are showing their support for Oxfam’s work with donations of autographed items, clothing, art and concert tickets. Available items include a Dolce & Gabbana jacket worn by Chris Martin on Coldplay’s Rush of Blood Tour which is signed by the band members, Sir Elton John’s tailor-made Donatella Versace suit, gold Roger Vivier Shoes signed by Sienna Miller, and a script from The Queen signed by Dame Helen Mirren.

According to UN figures, four years of ethnic strife in Darfur have resulted in at least 200,000 deaths and left more than two million people displaced. Oxfam provides aid to 470,000 people in Sudan’s Darfur and 60,000 in neighboring Chad, which has been affected by the years of unrest.

Oxfam’s work in the area costs $10 million each year, and the charity hopes this auction will raise at least $500,000 towards those costs. The public is invited to either donate items to the auction or simply make a monetary donation.

Scissor Sisters and Sienna Miller have joined the Global Cool SMS Initiative, and will be rewarding fans who sign up for the campaign with “cool” text messages every month.

The celebrities will send subscribers two text messages a month offering energy-saving tips to help consumers in the fight against global warming.

Others who have joined the charity’s campaign include Rosario Dawson and Josh Hartnett.

Kidman Designs T-Shirt For Breast Cancer Charity

Hollywood beauty Nicole Kidman is continuing her support for the UK charity Breast Cancer Care by designing a T-shirt for their Little Tee Campaign.

Commenting on her design she said, “I first worked with Breast Cancer Care about a year ago and saw what remarkable and effective work they did. To me this image represents the power and importance of support, comfort and care, so crucial to those with breast cancer and their families.”

Shirts and vests designed by a variety of celebrities including Sienna Miller and Sharon Osbourne are on sale at 600 Dorothy Perkins stores as well as at the Dorothy Perkins website. The shirts cost £15 each, with £5 going directly to Breast Cancer Care.

“After raising an incredible £1.3 million for Breast Cancer Care last year, we are delighted that Dorothy Perkins is continuing to support the charity in 2006,” said Murray Lindo, the charity’s director of fundraising.

Kidman’s mother successfully fought off breast cancer when Nicole was young.
