The line wound around the Los Angeles Mission on Monday as Skid Row residents waited to get a new pair of shoes during the kick-off of National Barefoot Week. 874 pairs of shoes were distributed in Los Angeles, the first day of a week where more than 10,000 pairs of shoes were expected to be distributed in five cities nationwide.

Soles4Souls, the Nashville-based nonprofit, focuses on providing free shoes to needy people around the world. The organization organized Barefoot Week in an effort to provide new shoes for the homeless in the US. Sole4Souls collects and distributes both new shoes in the US and “gently worn” shoes overseas. Soles4Souls was started by professionals in the footwear industry who use industry resources to make a difference around the world.

Soles4Souls has announced its schedule for Barefoot Week 2011, which includes media events and shoe distributions in seven cities.

As it does each year during the first week of June, the non-profit organization will be distributing thousands of pairs of new shoes in the United States while it also collects much needed donations through shoe drives at schools, churches and community centers. The charity is asking Americans to choose one day during the week to go barefoot—at the office, at school or in public— to raise awareness for the millions of people worldwide who live in extreme poverty and can’t afford shoes.

“It’s an honor to donate shoes to help Soles4Souls as they do incredible things for the less fortunate people in this world,” said Jessica Simpson. “I encourage everyone to lend support.”

Hundreds of homeless men and women stood in line on Friday afternoon at the Los Angeles Mission, to receive free shoes. And they were not any ordinary shoes. The latest designs from Los Angeles based lifestyle footwear brand Creative Recreation were gracing the feet of Skid Row residents by the end of the day.

The shoes were donated through Soles4Souls, a nonprofit that procures shoes and gets them to those in need all over the world. Soles4Souls has partnered with the Los Angeles Mission several times in the past to distribute shoes on Skid Row.

Soccer star Mia Hamm and her husband, former Dodger Nomar Garciaparra, will host their third annual ‘Celebrity Soccer Challenge’ on January 16 at the Home Depot Center in Carson California to raise money and awareness about bone marrow disease.

Last years event raised nearly $200,000 for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the Mia Hamm Foundation while encouraging the thousands of fans in attendance to register for the National Marrow Donor Program Registry.

It is a cause close to Hamm’s heart, because she lost her brother Garrett to aplastic anemia, a bone marrow disease, in 1997.

Kellie Pickler’s affinity for shoes is well documented. Her 2006 debut single kicked a no-account-ex-boyfriend to the curb in “Red High Heels,” and her current, self titled album closes with “Going Out In Style,” which expresses her desire for her final resting place…having her ashes spread in shoe department of Saks Fifth Avenue.
