www.handbag.com and Cancer Research UK have announced a new partnership with the launch of the first ever Handbag Amnesty.

Taking place throughout the month of September – www.handbag.com’s dedicated handbag month – and climaxing in October, the Handbag Amnesty will give women across the country the opportunity to bid for the designer handbag of their favourite celebrity including, just to name a few, Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller and Dame Shirley Bassey, to raise money to help beat cancer.

www.handbag.com and Cancer Research UK are asking celebrities to make space in their wardrobes by donating one of their designer handbags to the Amnesty. The bags will then be auctioned on eBay from Friday 3rd – Sunday 14th October to tie in with Breast Cancer Awareness month. Open to everyone, all proceeds will go to Cancer Research UK, the largest single funder of research into breast cancer, one of the most common cancers in the UK.

Some of the other celebrities who have donated handbags are America Ferrera, Annie Lennox, Ashlee Simpson, Geri Halliwell, Dame Judi Dench, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Scarlett Johansson.

The Handbag Amnesty, however, is not just about celebrities. www.handbag.com and Cancer Research UK are also asking members of the public to donate a handbag that is still in good condition to their local Cancer Research UK shop. Stars To Attend Coma Patient's Gala

A gala to raise funds for charity in the name of a 17-year-old British coma patient will take place this Saturday.

Sophie Wilkinson has been in a coma since she was involved in a car accident last October, and her plight has attracted a wide range of celebrities to step forth and help raise the funds needed to provide her with care. Earlier this year her parents set up the Sophie’s Gift Fundraising Program on behalf of the Southampton Hospital Trust to raise the £250,000 (US$500,000) needed to provide Sophie with a Mobile CT Scanner. As well as receiving a video and words of encouragement from Johnny Depp, Sophie has also got support from the likes of Sharon Osbourne, Top Gear’s Richard Hammond, and Chris Tarrant.

Sophie’s parents, Andrew and Alison Wilkinson, have also established a database of celebrity voices to help wake up other coma patients. Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, and Amanda Holden are just some of the names who have already committed to the initiative.

The Sophie’s Gift Gala Dinner will take place on the 5th July at the Macdonald Botley Park Hotel, with proceeds to go to the Southampton Hospital Charity. Attendees can expect live entertainment and a spectacular auction and gala dinner, with several celebrities – such as Chris Tarrant and Mike Osman – scheduled to make an appearance.

Nelson Mandela's 90th Birthday Party Rocks London

Hyde Park was transformed into a giant birthday bash Friday night as 46,664 people joined “birthday boy” Nelson Mandela and a stellar lineup of entertainers to raise funds and awareness for his 46664 charity.

It had been raining on and off all day in London, but the skies cleared just in time for the once-in-a-lifetime lineup of musicians and entertainers to take the stage in honor of Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday. The event was hosted by an enthusiastic Will Smith, and performers included Jivan Gasparyan, Razorlight, the cast of Into the ‘Hoods, Sipho Mibuze, Leona Lewis, Zucchero, Suzanna Owiyo and D’Gary, Sugababes, Annie Lennox (who performed with the Agape Children’s Choir), Emmanual Jal, Vusi Mahlasela, Jamelia, Loyiso, Johnny Clegg, Joan Baez, Eddy Grant, Kurt Darren, Simple Minds, Brian May and Andrea Corr, Amy Winehouse, 9ice and Bebe Cool, Josh Groban, Amaral, and Queen and Paul Rodgers. The renowned Soweto Gospel Choir accompanied many of the acts. Additional entertainers who introduced the musical acts included Quincy Jones, Lewis Hamilton, Geri Halliwell, Peter Gabriel, Stephen Fry, and Jerry Dammers.

After Jivan Gasparyan opened the show with an instrumental piece to accompany a moving series of photographs of Mandela, Will Smith took to the stage with his wife Jada and announced, “The party starts now.” An energizing performance by Razorlight set the tone for the rest of the evening.

Quincy Jones introduced crowd favorite Leona Lewis, who sang her two top hits “Better in Time” and “Bleeding Love.” Lewis wished Mandela a happy birthday and told a touching story of how she and her family used to sing songs about him when she was young.

Other birthday wishes came via a film of various celebrities who were unable to attend, including David Beckham, Victoria Beckham, Sharon Osbourne, Sheryl Crow, Morgan Freeman, and Susan Sarandon.

Smith returned to the stage throughout the show, revving the crowd with a surprise performance of his song “Switch,” which included rap verses from his hit television show “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.” Annie Lennox, a passionate HIV/AIDS activist and staunch supporter of Mandela’s charities, made a moving speech about a young girl she had met in Africa who was gravely ill with AIDS but was able to make a miraculous recovery thanks to proper treatment and care. Before and after images of the girl were shown on the large screens behind Lennox, who then performed a song with the Agape Children’s Choir. The crowd sang along as the lyrics “We are together… We are family” flashed across the screens.

Peter Gabriel introduced Emmanual Jal, a former child soldier in Sudan who sang a song dedicated to the British aid worker who rescued him and 150 other children. Gerri Halliwell introduced trailblazing South African music legend Johnny Clegg, who performed a duet with Joan Baez.

Immediately following this performance was the highlight of the night. Will and Jada Smith introduced the “birthday boy” himself, and Nelson Mandela was escorted onto the stage to thunderous cheers and applause. The concert performers gathered on stage and, together with the nearly 50,000 people in attendance, sang “Happy Birthday.”

Mandela waved to the crowd and made a brief, moving speech. “We say tonight after nearly 90 years of life, it’s time for new hands to lift the burdens,” he said. “It’s in your hands now, I thank you.”

Eddy Grant and Kurt Darren followed up Mandela’s appearance with “Give Me Hope Johanna,” a song Grant wrote during South Africa’s apartheid regime. Simple Minds performed, having also performed at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute concert at London’s Wembley Stadium in 1988; and celebrated English humorist Stephen Fry introduced Brian May and Andrea Corr. The most highly anticipated performance of the evening came next, as a recently hospitalized Amy Winehouse teetered onto the stage in platform heels to perform her hit songs “Rehab” and “Valerie.”

After a politically-fueled performance by Nigerian artist 9ice and Ugandan musician Bebe Cool – who appeared on stage in bright orange prison jumpsuits emblazoned with “46664” – Josh Groban sang with Vusi Mahlasela and the Soweto Gospel Choir. Spanish artists Amaral performed an acoustic number, and then Mandela and the audience were treated to a video of U2’s Bono and The Edge singing Stevie Wonder’s peppy rendition of “Happy Birthday.”

The penultimate act was Queen and Paul Rodgers, who performed a fan-friendly medley of Queen’s greatest hits, including “The Show Must Go On,” “We Will Rock You” and “We are the Champions.” The crowd sang and clapped along thunderously.

The concert’s finale featured anti-apartheid campaigner and musician Jerry Dammers, who organized the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute. Dammers and Winehouse led the entire line-up of performers and the crowd in singing Dammers’ anthem “Free Nelson Mandela.” Formerly sung in protest against Mandela’s imprisonment, the song took on a celebratory tone and was a fitting end to an historic event.

All proceeds from the concert will go to 46664, the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s campaign for global HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

Johnny Depp Gives Wake Up Call To Coma Sufferer

A 17-year-old British girl is showing the first signs of waking up from a coma, and her parents are now enlisting celebrities to help with a new charity to help others with the same problem.

Sophie Wilkinson has been in a coma since a horror car crash in November last year, and over the past few days she has started to become aware of what is going on around her, focusing on people, responding to voice commands and making vocalisations. Her parents, Andrew and Alison Wilkinson, are thrilled but say now is the crucial time to get their daughter listening to as many different voice recordings as possible to make sure she continues to improve, and have enlisted the help of several high profile celebrities to help them. And the response from famous voices has been so strong that the couple now want to start up a service for other coma sufferers.

Johnny Depp, Sharon Osbourne, and Top Gear’s Richard Hammond have all pledged their support for the initiative, and Depp also recorded a tape of physical commands for Sophie in the voice of his Pirates of the Caribbean character, Captain Jack Sparrow.

“When someone is in a coma, it’s important to find that key to unlocking them out of the coma,” said Alison Wilkinson. “It could be a smell, a sound, or a voice. In Sophie’s case we knew she was a huge fan of Johnny so we thought that if she heard his voice it may wake her. We realised what a great idea it would be to have a bank of celebrity voices reading out specific commands that the doctors have issued. No matter who a person’s favourite star is, their family could get a tape from our Wake Up bank. Nobody knows what the right key will be but anything is worth a try, and if we can make that easier for families in our situation it will be worth it.”

Andrew Wilkinson is also excited about the charity initiative idea: “We were over the moon when Johnny agreed to record a tape, and now more stars are signing up it’s fantastic. We have had lots of promises from people, but only a few have actually sent recordings. Now that Sophie is showing signs of responding to certain voices it’s the critical time to get her listening to as many different voices as possible. That is why our Wake Up charity is so important, because people in the future will not have to wait like we are at this vital time. Having all the voices in a bank will mean we can get them to the families quicker and celebrities only have to do one recording.”

Help For Heroes Gets Royal Treatment

Help for Heroes is certainly living up to its name. The charity aimed at helping injured service personnel returning from Iraq and Afghanistan launched in October of 2007 with an initial goal of raising $12 million. With help from the community, various fundraisers and celebrities, Help for Heroes, has managed to raise a staggering $6 million in little under five months.

“I am incredibly proud and grateful for the commitment and work that our armed forces do for our country”, said soccer star David Beckham. “I support the campaign fully.”

On May 7, City Salute will host an event to benefit Help for Heroes, and has already attracted two notable British citizens – Prince William and Prince Harry.

“As brothers, we are delighted to be supporting the City of London in saluting all those who serve their country,” said Prince William. “As well as raising money for vital rehabilitation facilities, City Salute is an opportunity for us all to celebrate the fantastic contribution made by our servicemen and women and their families. It is also a chance to pay tribute to the casualty evacuation and medical staff of all three Services who protect and care for the wounded so brilliantly and with such tireless dedication.”

Prince Harry, who just returned from serving in Afghanistan, spoke of the real heroes he met on his flight home to England. “There were two injured guys who came back on the plane with us who were essentially comatose throughout the whole way. One had lost two limbs – a left arm and a right leg – and the other was saved by his mate’s body being in the way but took shrapnel to the neck. Those are the heroes. Those were guys who had been blown up by a mine that they had no idea about, serving their country, doing a normal patrol. It is a choke in your throat because you know that it’s happening.”

Other celebrities who are supporting Help for Heroes include musician James Blunt, actor Michael Caine, American Idol’s Simon Cowell, and Sharon Osbourne.

Stars from the sports world, including Chelsea captain John Terry and rugby player Jonny Wilkinson have also been wearing wristbands, and the entire England soccer squad donated their match fees from their Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia to the charity. Look for players from 18 Premiere League teams to be wearing Help for Heroes wristbands on Remembrance Sunday Weekend.

Stars Prepare For Oscar Glory With Charity Parties

The next few days will be busy for Hollywood’s elite, as they practice their speeches and iron their gowns in anticipation of the 80th Academy Awards to be held on Sunday, February 24. As always, part of the pizzazz of the event is the glamorous parties in the days leading up to the big night. And although many of these soirees give the rich and famous a chance to be seen in the right places, a few are designed to raise awareness and funds for causes other than fame.

Wednesday, February 20, will see the Fifth Annual Global Green Pre-Oscar Party hit Hollywood between the eyes, with an event formulated to promote “smart solutions to global warming”. The party, to be held at the Avalon in Hollywood, will feature performances by Damien Rice and Michelle Branch, as well as Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, the stars of Oscar-nominated musical, Once.

A huge selection of stars are expected to attend the event, including Salma Hayek, Alicia Silverstone, Val Kilmer, Adrian Grenier, Dana Delany, and Josie Maran. There is also a strong possibility that committee members Orlando Bloom and Leonardo DiCaprio may also attend.

Tickets to the party, available from the Global Green website, cost $250 for general admission and $5,000 for “green carpet” access and entry to the Patron Lounge, with all proceeds going to Global Green’s climate initiatives and their efforts to rebuild a green New Orleans.

Another big event in the next few days is the 16th Annual Elton John AIDS Foundation Oscar Party, to be held at the Pacific Design Center, West Hollywood, on February 24.

The Elton John AIDS Foundation gala is the most highly visible and successful fundraising event in Hollywood on Oscar night, and over the past 15 years has generated over $15 Million for the fight against HIV/AIDS.

“This event is our most important fundraiser of the year,” the Foundation stated in a media statement. “Last year, we raised over $4.3 million, and we expect to exceed that record this year.”

The evening will begin at 4pm, with a special cocktail reception, followed by a formal dinner and a live screening of the Academy Awards. An auction, featuring items such as a vintage Corvette from Sharon Stone’s collection, will also be held, and Sir Elton will perform for guests such as Victoria and David Beckham, Ellen DeGeneres, Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, and Elizabeth Taylor.

“With the loyal support of the Hollywood community, the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Awards Viewing Party has raised significant attention and funds for the fight against HIV/AIDS over the past 15 years,” said Foundation Director Scott Campbell. “This year we hope to set the bar even higher and let the world know that we are as committed as ever to fighting this devastating disease.”

Osbournes Auction A Success

It was a sight not often seen in an auction room – heavy metal fans battling a bidding duel with art lovers. But this is exactly what was witnessed when Ozzy Osbourne and his wife Sharon auctioned off belongings from their former Beverly Hills mansion over the weekend of November 30 and December 1. Over 600 lots went under the hammer, raising a colossal $800,000 for charity – twice the amount expected.

“We had Ozzy fans bidding against these sophisticated fine art buyers, which you don’t see every day,” said Darren Julien of Julien’s Auctions. “For the most part, the metalheads were outbidding the art crowd.”

Most of the items up for grabs were an eclectic mix of memorabilia from “The Osbournes”, the hit MTV reality show that revealed the bizarre home life of the Rock ‘n’ Roll family. A coat embroidered with bats was snapped up for $3,300, and a pair of sneakers adorned with skulls was sold for over $2,000. One lucky bidder paid over $5,000 for Ozzy’s trademark round glasses.

Some of the more unusual items sold during the auction (as if those listed above were not unusual enough) included an oversized coffee cup that sold for $1,625, and a luxury dog bed given to Sharon by Elton John that went for $2,375.

Ozzy, who is not really known as a softy, thought twice about putting his pool table up for auction, because he cherished the memories of playing with his children as they grew up. But it eventually walked out the door for $11,250.

The fine art lovers, however, did not go home disappointed. A sculpture by French artist Edouard Drouot was sold for $10,500, and a painting by Gabriel Joseph Marie Augustin Ferrier disappeared for over $5,000.

The proceeds from the auction went to the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a facility Sharon set up in 2004 after beating the disease. She had been given a 33% chance of survival.

“For a celebrity garage sale, it was pretty spectacular,” said Julien.

Osbournes Auction Furniture

Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne are auctioning off furniture and works of art next month, with some of the funds going to the Sharon Osbourne Colon Cancer Program.

The couple will sell more than 600 lots of memorobilia, jewelry, furniture and decorative works of art from their homes in Malibu, Beverly Hills and England, including items such as their son Jack’s black leather bed and Ozzy’s gold, gem-encrusted American Flag bracelet. Many of the items have been seen in the hugely popular MTV reality show, The Osbournes.

The auction is set to take place at the Gibson Guitar Showroom in Beverly Hills on November 30 and December 1st, with a pre-sale exhibition taking place from November 26th-29th. Highlights from the sale will appear at the O2 in London on November 5th. Ozzy is also scheduled to perform a benefit concert for the charity at Staples Center in Los Angeles on the first night of the sale.

Another furniture auction recently raising funds for charity was the sale of the Tonight Show furniture. Jay Leno encouraged people to bid on the furniture, which included a sofa, guest chair, two cocktail tables, an ottoman and an area rug, along with Leno’s autographed desk. The sale benefitted Bailey’s Cafe, an education and cultural organization founded by Leno’s long-time friend, Stefanie Siegel. Over $45,000, was raised in the auction, all of which went to Bailey’s Cafe.

Kidman Designs T-Shirt For Breast Cancer Charity

Hollywood beauty Nicole Kidman is continuing her support for the UK charity Breast Cancer Care by designing a T-shirt for their Little Tee Campaign.

Commenting on her design she said, “I first worked with Breast Cancer Care about a year ago and saw what remarkable and effective work they did. To me this image represents the power and importance of support, comfort and care, so crucial to those with breast cancer and their families.”

Shirts and vests designed by a variety of celebrities including Sienna Miller and Sharon Osbourne are on sale at 600 Dorothy Perkins stores as well as at the Dorothy Perkins website. The shirts cost £15 each, with £5 going directly to Breast Cancer Care.

“After raising an incredible £1.3 million for Breast Cancer Care last year, we are delighted that Dorothy Perkins is continuing to support the charity in 2006,” said Murray Lindo, the charity’s director of fundraising.

Kidman’s mother successfully fought off breast cancer when Nicole was young.
