Viola Davis To Attend Friendly House Luncheon For Women In Recovery

On Saturday, October 24th 2009 Oscar nominated actress Viola Davis will host the annual Friendly House Luncheon. This star studded event at the beautiful Beverly Hilton Hotel will raise money and awareness about the oldest home for women in recovery in the country – Friendly House.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the luncheon and Friendly House will be honoring two individuals who exhibit great leadership and public service to the community. Founder and Editorial Director of C Magazine and Publisher and President of Santa Barbara Magazine, Jennifer Smith Hale will be awarded 2009 Woman of the Year. This successful business woman has captured California Style in her award winning magazines and gives back to her community through her philanthropic endeavors. Jennifer’s tireless efforts and leadership empower and create opportunities for women to see possibilities in their lives. New York Times bestselling author, Christopher Kennedy Lawford will be awarded 2009 Excellence in Service. Through Christopher’s extraordinary literature and his continuous activism, Christopher strives to make a difference helping others overcome substance abuse problems and living with hepatitis C.

Currently celebrating its 59th year in service, Friendly House has successfully treated thousands of women for alcoholism and drug addiction. No individual has ever been turned away due to lack of funds, however, Friendly House receives no state, federal or local funding. The organization thrives on annual events produced by their Board of Directors to promote and support their cause.

Forest Whitaker Gets Behind Mandela Day

Forest Whitaker joined a host of celebrities at an event yesterday to raise awareness of Mandela Day, an annual celebration of Nelson Mandela's life and a global call to action for people to recognize their individual power to make an imprint and change the world around them.

Yesterday’s event was held in Los Angeles and was attended by stars such as Morgan Freeman, Clint Eastwood, Marisa Tomei, Sharon Stone, Noah Wyle, Alfre Woodard and Viola Davis.

Nelson Mandela has been making an imprint on the world for 67 years, beginning in 1942 when he first started to campaign for the human rights of every South African. The annual celebration is being created to inspire others to embrace Nelson Mandela’s values as they seek to improve their lives through service to their communities. 46664 and the Nelson Mandela Foundation are calling on people around the world to support the creation of an official Mandela Day, to be held annually on July 18, Mr. Mandela’s birthday.

This year, the celebration includes a series of special events in New York City involving many of the charity’s global ambassadors from the worlds of entertainment, music and film.

46664, the campaign that bears Mr. Mandela’s Robben Island prison number, was originally launched to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS. Working alongside the other Mandela organizations, it is now expanding its focus to champion Mr. Mandela’s broader humanitarian work. A centerpiece of 46664’s activities will be the celebration of Mandela Day each year, and funds raised from Mandela Day will support the ongoing work of 46664 and the Nelson Mandela charitable organizations.

Meryl Streep's Doubt For Actors Fund

The Actors Fund of America is holding a special screening of the movie Doubt, and invites you to join the film’s stars Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis to raise money for their cause.

Doubt – to be released in December – is based on John Patrick Stanley’s Pulitzer Prize winning play about a priest’s relationship with a black student in the 1960’s.

The screening will take place at the Paris Theatre in New York on December 7, with a special reception afterwards. Proceeds will go towards the Actors Fund’s mission to help professionals in performing arts and entertainment who are in need or crisis.

Tickets for the screening and reception are $150, and $50 for the screening only. They are available at the Actors Fund website.
