SAG Foundation Launches Online Celebrity Charity Auction

The Screen Actors Guild Awards kicks off the first of its three online auctions to benefit the SAG Foundation at www.sagawards.org/auction with a Holiday Auction on Friday, Dec. 10, 2010.

Coming up in January, the Red Carpet Bleacher Seat auction from Jan. 3-10, 2011 will offer fans the opportunity to cheer the 17th Annual SAG Awards’ nominees and presenters as they make their way down the red carpet. The Ceremony auction that launches Jan. 27-31 will feature one-of-a kind experiences and memorabilia donated by our nominees and their films and television programs as well as sponsors and media.

The SAG Awards Auctions benefit the SAG Foundation to help make possible the Foundation’s public children’s literacy programs: BookPALS (Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools) and Storyline Online. The auction also supports Foundation programs providing emergency relief to SAG members in economic distress, video and audio preservation of the creative legacy of SAG members, scholarships for performers and their children, emergency funds for members with catastrophic illnesses and The Actor’s Center. Ted Danson And Friends Want You To Be An Ocean Hero

Oceana has launched a brand new star-studded PSA that urges viewers to take an online pledge to protect the oceans, saying: “The oceans need your help. Take the pledge. Be an Ocean Hero.” For each pledge, an anonymous donor will donate $1 to Oceana.

The spot features an all-star cast of celebrity ocean advocates including Oceana board members Ted Danson and Sam Waterston, as well as fellow Oceana supporters Kate Walsh, January Jones, Anna Torv and Sam Trammel.

January Jones Afraid For Sharks

Actress January Jones was in Washington recently on behalf of Oceana’s campaign to save the sharks. She was there to lobby Congress members to tighten up US laws that would help regenerate the population of sharks from which 100 million are killed every year.

“The United States needs to stand up for sharks,” said Jones. “Congress can do its part by passing the Shark Conservation Act.”

Existing laws already ban “finning” – where a shark’s fins are cut off and the carcass thrown back into the sea – yet allow for the transfer of fins at sea from countries without restrictions as a way around the ban. However, Oceana is pushing for the requirement that sharks be landed whole, i.e. with fins still naturally attached. They also want to decrease the demand for shark products and reduce unintended shark catch.

Tobey Maguire Attends Skid Row Housing Event

The Skid Row Housing Trust hosted a 20th Anniversary Gala Celebration and Open House at the New Carver Apartments in Los Angeles last night and attracted a host of stars.

The event was held in the Trust’s 22nd building that provides supportive housing for Los Angeles’ homeless community. Guests included Tobey Maguire, Jen Meyer, Sarah Meyer, Ashley Olsen, Justin Bartha, Scott Speedman, Julie Bowen, Sam Trammell, Kat Dennings, Alison Hannigan, Oliver Hudson, January Jones, Justin Long, and New Zealand-born actress Melanie Lynsky, as well as Los Angeles’ elite, business leaders, members of the interior design community and architect, Michael Maltzan.

Four of the apartments feature resident inspired designs by celebrated Los Angeles designers, Katie Fine, Molly Luetkemeyer, Ruthie Sommer and Estee Stanley.
