More Performers Added To VH1 Divas Show

VH1 Divas – benefiting the Save The Music Foundation – has announced additional performers to join this year’s tribute to soul music.

Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Boyz II Men, Estelle, Marsha Ambrosius and Travie McCoy will join VH1’s “divas” in paying homage to these cities and soul music’s timeless classics at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom. VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul premieres Monday, December 19 at 9 PM/8c on VH1.

Cher Busy With New Charity

Cher has been busy lately, supporting a charity she co-founded in March that seeks to provide underprivileged Arab-Israeli youth a unique and dynamic pathway to equal opportunity and full participation in the building of future civil society.

The singer established the Polyphony Foundation with Palestinian violinist Nabeel Abboud-Ashkar to create programs of education through music to help bridge the divide between Israel’s Arab and Jewish communities, facilitating cultural exchange, dialogue and partnership.

“When I listen to these young people, I know that they’re standing and a spirit is coming through them,” says Cher. “It’s pureness.”

As reported earlier this week on LookToTheStars.org, the third installment of Kat Kramer’s Films That Change the World featured the world premiere of the documentary “Elephants and Man: A Litany of Tragedy” at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood on Thursday, January 20.
 
 The film, executive produced by Melya Kaplan and directed by Jacek Kropinski, chronicles the history of elephants in captivity. Kaplan, founder of the nonprofit Voice for the Animals Foundation, contends that zoos and circuses are not capable of properly caring for elephants due to their size and their need for vast amounts of space in which to roam. Many celebrities have joined Kaplan in a campaign to persuade zoos to close elephant exhibits and transfer the pachyderms to larger sanctuaries.

Documentary film Elephants and Man: A Litany of Tragedy premiered last month, and several animal rights activists were there to show support – including Lily Tomlin, Cher, Ed Begley Jr. and Tippi Hedren.

The documentary outlines the “physical and emotional agony elephants have endured in captivity through the centuries.” In the film, zoo and animal specialists in several capacities speak about the business of zoos, conservation, education and practical problems, which all affect the mortality rates of elephants in captivity.

“This film clearly shows how elephants endure a lifetime of suffering when they are captured or bred to be put on exhibit for our momentary pleasure,” Tomlin said, according to Broadway World. “Ambulating is necessary to keep their feet and joints disease free and their mental state healthy and thriving. A sanctuary with hundreds of acres and the companionship of other elephants is the closest environment we can provide to their living in the wild.”

VH1 Divas To Return For Charity

After a four-year hiatus, VH1 will bring back the legendary live concert event “VH1 Divas” by featuring some of pop music’s most talented female artists – Adele, Kelly Clarkson, Leona Lewis and Miley Cyrus. The “VH1 Divas” concert will be televised live on VH1 on Thursday, September 17 at 9:00pm.

Proceeds from the show will go to VH1’s Save The Music Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of education in America’s public schools by restoring music programs in cities across the country, and raising public awareness about the importance of music participation for our nation’s youth. Celebrities were out and about in droves on Tuesday to celebrate Barack Obama’s inauguration by attending several charity balls.

One of the largest was the Creative Coalition Ball at the Harman Center for the Arts in Washington DC. The sold-out event cost between $10,000 and $100,000 to attend, and attracted appearances by Ashley Judd, Anne Hathaway, Susan Sarandon, Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Rachael Leigh Cook, Ron Howard, Heather Graham, Forest Whitaker, Magic Johnson and many more. Entertainment was provided by Elvis Costello, Sam Moore and Sting.

The Creative Coalition is a nonprofit public charity organized by the creative community to learn about pressing issues so they can better inform and influence the community and nation.

Kite Runner Auction Raises Afghan Hopes

Madonna, Will Ferrell and Angelina Jolie are among the many celebrities who have joined the Kite Runner Auction, which runs until the 15th of December.

The auction corresponds with the theater release of The Kite Runner on December 14th. Based on the book of the same name, the film explores the world of Amir, who returns to Afghanistan after 20 years in America to set right his past mistakes.

The book’s author Khaled Hosseini is joined in the auction by tail-signers Edward Norton, Steve Nash, Cher and Halle Berry. 75% of the auction’s proceeds will be donated to the Afghanistan Relief Organization.

The countdown to Christmas has begun, and celebrities are doing their best to make holiday shopping easy this year. Several charity auctions have already kicked off to raise money for good causes, including one that may be eBay’s largest sale of celebrity items… ever!

The BID 2 BEAT AIDS online auction will open on December 1, World AIDS Day, and will feature over 1000 specially signed items, ranging from posters to iPods. The annual auction will raise money for LIFEbeat, the music industry’s AIDS fundraising and service charity, and in the past has raised up to $175,000.

The array of memorabilia up for sale this year is simply colossal, with perhaps the most interesting items being a series of “Lend a Hand to LIFEbeat” cards that feature the handprints of over 100 celebrities. Stars such as Britney Spears, Jack Black, and Kathy Griffin traced around the outlines of their hands and decorated their artworks for the auction, and the finished products will make a unique addition to any Christmas stocking.
