Maria Sharapova To Make Charity Trip To Belarus

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Goodwill Ambassador Maria Sharapova will head straight from the 2010 Wimbledon tournament to Belarus to visit an area affected by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

The tennis star plans to travel to the Gomel region where her charitable foundation has helped fund a number of UNDP youth-focused projects.

The UNDP projects provide new opportunities for young people in Gomel and improve living conditions for their communities. In the town of Chechersk, Sharapova will visit a local arts centre where children learn about the environment and work on projects to beautify the town; she will then stop over at a health facility using a therapeutic approach to emotional and mental stress. Finally, she will meet with the recipients of her foundation’s scholarships, who attend the country’s top universities.

Antonio Banderas Named As United Nations Goodwill Ambassador

The United Nations Development Programme has announced that Antonio Banderas will be its new Goodwill Ambassador for the fight against poverty.

“Poverty robs us of our potential as a people, preventing us from being all that we can be,” said Banderas. “This is why it is so important to mobilize all of our efforts to defeat it, especially if today we have the knowledge, the tools and the resources to do it.”

In his new role as an advocate for the poor, Antonio Banderas will set his sights on the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s), a set of eight globally agreed targets that seek to halve world poverty by 2015 by combating hunger, disease, illiteracy, environment degradation and discrimination against women.

Akon Has Konfidence In Charity Single

Akon and Pepsi have released a charity single with some surprising friends – international football superstars Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba.

Oh Africa is available for download from iTunes now, with proceeds going to Akon’s Konfidence Foundation. Founded in 2006, the Konfidence Foundation is dedicated to increasing public awareness of the conditions in Africa and providing underprivileged African youth with access to learning and recreational environments equipped with modern technology, educational materials, recreational resources, and health and wellness services.

“We’re really excited about the new track and music video from multi-platinum selling artist Akon and Grammy-nominee Keri Hilson and hope it raises money for less fortunate children in Africa,” said Ahmed Abdel-Karim, UK marketing manager for Pepsi.

Didier Drogba Talks Charity

Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is currently representing Les Elephants in Angola at the African Cup of Nations, but there’s more than soccer on his mind – he’s eager to address issues of health care in his home city of Abidjan, where he intends to build a hospital as the first major project for the Didier Drogba Foundation.

“To open the hospital would be the best achievement of my life, that would be my contribution to Ivory Coast. The minimum I can do is to make them feel important.
”

The often misunderstood player hopes more fans take notice of his charity work off the pitch.

Bono And Didier Drogba Lace Up To Save Lives

On the eve of World AIDS Day, Chelsea’s Didier Drogba turned RED as he teamed up with U2 front man Bono and Nike to launch the ’Lace Up. Save Lives" initiative to fight HIV and AIDS.

With Drogba on board, Nike announced it’s partnership with (RED) and is selling special red laces under the banner “Lace Up. Save Lives,” with the proceeds to be split equally between the Global Fund and soccer-based community programs aimed at educating people about AIDS.

“It was important to me to be involved in the Red campaign because I’m from Africa,” Ivory Coast international Drogba told a news conference in London. “It’s a big honor and pleasure for me to be linked with Bono and try to help him save some lives. AIDS and HIV is something that really destroyed Africa, and people don’t really realize how easy it is to save lives — only two pills a day, which is 40 cents.”

Euro Soccer Stars To Come Stateside For Charity Match

Arsenal F.C Defender Mikael Silvestre is gathering Soccer’s all-stars in New York for a weekend full of fundraising events from June 11th-14th to benefit his charity, the Schools for Hope Foundation. The culminating event is to be a match versus the New York Red Bulls on Sunday, June 14 at Giant Stadium.

Scoring points for their respective teams won’t be the only goal for these players, however. An ambitious $1,000,000 is the target amount to be raised for new school construction and educational centers around the world.
