Actress Elisabeth Rohm – co-star of Taylor Lautner’s recent film Abduction – was seen reading to children at the Gymboree Play & Music of the Westside Pavilion in Los Angeles on October 6 as part of Jumpstart’s Read for the Record event.

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record is a global day of reading during which millions pledge to read with children to raise awareness for the importance of early education. For the past three years, Gymboree Play & Music has partnered with Jumpstart for this world record breaking day of reading, helping to instill children everywhere with an early love of books and prepare them to be successful in school and in life.

Juno and Grammy award winner Nelly Furtado has graciously donated $1 million to international charity and educational partner, Free The Children.

The donation will fund two new Free The Children programs supporting girls in need throughout the Maasai Mara region of Kenya and in the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA), two regions in need of support in different ways – with the current drought in East Africa and with the transitional changes in North Africa.

In a YouTube video titled Votes for Dummies, singer Nelly Furtado totes an “It’s your Canada. VOTE!” t-shirt while encouraging young adults to vote in Canada’s May 2nd federal elections.

Although the campaigning has turned out to be more exciting than when it started a few short weeks ago, none of the parties are addressing the youth demographic, presumably because youth don’t tend to vote.

Furtado admitted that she was herself a voting dummy, detached from politics which she found to be boring. She only started voting a few years ago (this is Canada’s fourth election in seven years) and is excited to be a part of the democratic process.

50 Cent Donates Gadhafi Money To Charity

Rapper 50 Cent is the latest star to donate money earned from a performance for Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi.

“In light of the on-going events in Libya, 50 Cent will be making a donation to UNICEF, which is providing vital relief supplies to meet the needs of women and children at risk during this crisis,” said a rep for the star.

50 Cent performed at a private event at the 2005 Venice Film Festival linked to the Gadhafi clan, and follows other stars in donating performance earnings to charity, including Nelly Furtado, Usher, Beyoncé and mariah Carey.

Usher is the latest star to confirm that money raised from performances for Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has been donated to charity.

Following last week’s announcements that Nelly Furtado and Beyoncé have donated earnings from shows to charity, Usher said: “I am sincerely troubled to learn about the circumstances surrounding the Nikki Beach St. Bart’s event that took place on New Year’s Eve 2009. I will be donating all of my personal proceeds from that event to various human rights organizations.”

Usher followed his statement by donating to Amnesty International on Friday.

Beyoncé has confirmed that the money she made for a performance for Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi in 2009 was donated to charity.

Following Nelly Furtado’s announcement that she is donating the $1 million paid for a similar performance to charity, other stars such as Beyoncé came under the spotlight to do the same.

Nelly Furtado has announced that she will donate the $1 million she was paid by Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi for a show in 2007 to charity.

In a Tweet, Nelly revealed she was paid the money for a 45 minute show at a hotel in Italy. The Gadhafi clan is currently fighting to stay in control of Libya in the face of a bloody and increasingly violent uprising.

Nelly is one of several stars to have accepted money from Gadhafi for performances in recent years, and has yet to announce which charities will receive the donation.

The Mines Advisory Group is launching a very special celebrity charity auction this week to raise money for people affected by landmines.

Stars such as Katy Perry, Pink, Shirley Bassey, Twiggy, Joanna Lumley, Nelly Furtado, Alan Shearer and Tony Blair’s wife, Cherie, have donated their shoes to the auction, which launches on July 22 and runs till August 1.

“We’ve been totally overwhelmed by the support we’ve had from celebrities who’ve given up their shoes to help those affected by conflict every day,” said MAG’s Give Landmines The Boot auction organizer Zoe Corden. "MAG chose to run a celebrity shoe auction because often its peoples’ feet that are the most at risk from landmine blasts, and the stars that donated did so to help us stamp a link between shoes and the dangers that lurk beneath them for millions worldwide.

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record 2009 campaign officially set a new record for the world’s largest shared reading experience. On Oct. 8th, adults across the globe read Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar to 2,019,752 children! This year’s campaign shattered the previous record of 688,000, set by Jumpstart’s Read for the Record 2008.

Presented in partnership with sponsor and founding partner Pearson, Jumpstart’s Read for the Record is a celebration of reading and community service created to raise awareness about how important reading with young children is to developing crucial early language and literacy skills for success in school and in life. This year’s campaign donated more than 275,000 books and raised more than $1.4 million to support Jumpstart’s year-long work with preschool children. This Sunday, July 1st, music will fill the skies in remembrance of Princess Diana. The event was organised by her sons, Prince William and Prince Harry to celebrate her life, ten years after her death.

Concert For Diana will take place at Wembley Stadium in London, and is showcasing a wide variety of musical styles, from Andrew Lloyd-Webber to P. Diddy. Legends Elton John, Rod Stewart and Tom Jones will be joined by the likes of Joss Stone, Nelly Furtado, Pharrell Williams, Kanye West and James Morrison.

Many more performances will take place during the 8-hour-long event, including those by Duran Duran, Take That, Lily Allen and the English National Ballet.

How To Make A Charity Quilt

Canadian singer Nelly Furtado plans to raise funds for environmental group The Land Conservancy by auctioning a handmade patchwork quilt.

Furtado will make the centre square, and she is asking her fans to contribute their own creations for the rest of the project. Those fans whose panels are included in the quilt will receive an autographed photo of the singer.
