Stars Design Christmas Trees To Keep America Beautiful

From October 15 through December 5, Smith & Hawken is holding an online auction of Christmas trees designed by actresses Julianne Moore, Brooke Shields, Angie Harmon and celebrity couple Eva Longoria Parker and Tony Parker to benefit Keep America Beautiful (KAB).

Garden specialists Smith & Hawken have joined forces with celebrity stylist Robert Verdi, who worked closely with each celebrity to come up with their own individual designs using Smith & Hawken ornaments, garlands, light strings and garden gear.

“Every celebrity that I called to participate in this fundraiser for Keep America Beautiful immediately said ‘yes’,” stated Verdi. “The holidays are filled with unique traditions, celebrations and memories. Each one of these tree designs captures the essence of holiday warmth and the love of time spent with family and friends.”

“This is such a great concept for a fundraiser, and with the A-list stars supporting it, Keep America Beautiful couldn’t be more thrilled to be the chosen beneficiary,” said Matthew M. McKenna, President and CEO of Keep America Beautiful. “The funds generated by this auction will help us in fulfilling our grassroots mission to build cleaner, greener, stronger communities nationwide.”

To participate in the auction beginning October 15, bidders can visit CharityBuzz.com, pick their favorite tree and click on the “BID NOW” button. The auction winners will receive their trees in time for the holidays.

The tree designed by Brooke Shields will be on display in the Smith & Hawken store in Beverly Hills (370 N. Canon Dr), the Angie Harmon designed tree will be in the Mill Valley store (800 Redwood Hwy), and the Julianne Moore designed tree will be at Robert Verdi’s Luxe Laboratory from October 15 until the end of the auction. The Eva Longoria Parker and Tony Parker tree will be in the new Smith & Hawken store opening in San Antonio on October 21. A listing of all products used on each tree will also be viewable online, so consumers can “get the look” of their favorite celebrity-designed tree.

Celebrities Listen For Disadvantaged Children

A huge and exciting new global media campaign has kicked off to raise awareness and funds for some of the world’s most disadvantaged children.

The Listen Campaign is the result of seven years work and research, and is being supported by a host of celebrities who want the public to listen to the rights and needs of children affected by poverty, disease, natural disaster, exploitation, war, and AIDS in places such as Africa, America, Asia, and Eastern Europe.

“Listen is an annual global media campaign bringing together some of the finest creative artists in film, music, and the arts to raise awareness and funds for 200 children’s charity projects around the world, and to develop a worldwide community of supporters,” said Tony Hollingsworth, Executive Producer of the campaign.

The campaign’s website was launched in November, and contains short films made by some of the world’s biggest stars, who have spent time visiting and listening to children in need. Brooke Shields, Jessica Lange, Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Natalie Portman, and Ashley Judd have all pledged their support for the campaign and are featured on the site, and Samuel L. Jackson has recorded a film about children in New Orleans.

”I had to come here for this… to listen to remarkable stories,” said Jackson, who was drawn to the project from the outset. “I don’t know how [the children] get through it. These kids shouldn’t be hungry and homeless, going to school hearing gunshots, without good schooling, getting ill from the formaldehyde leaching out of the trailer walls. That these kids are still suffering, two years after Hurricane Katrina, is a national scandal. Their voice should be a call to action.”

The campaign has set a fundraising target of $100 million for its first year, and hopes to raise over $10 billion within 10 years. Magazines, newspapers, internet, and television – in fact, every type of media available – are all going to play their part in attaining the campaign’s goal of making 500 million people a year aware of the plight of desperate children. Broadcasts will be made in over 60 countries, with two television specials set for worldwide release in June. One of these, Listen Live, will be a spectacular concert event in Los Angeles, in which major music stars will collaborate to perform one-off versions of their most famous songs, with musical direction from the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart and legendary music producer Don Was.

Over seventy of the world’s most respected charities, such as Save the Children, CARE, Christian Aid, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, (RED), and WaterAid have nominated 200 children’s projects for the campaign to benefit. All of the beneficiary projects have been pre-declared, and can be seen on the website so the public knows exactly how their donations are to be used. As a unique addition, all donors will also receive five update reports to show exactly how their money is changing the lives of children.

“Pre-declaring the projects that will be funded and then reporting back on the effect of the donor’s money is a key difference of the Listen Campaign to other major international fundraising campaigns,” said Hollingsworth. “This pre-declaration and impact reporting will build public trust, and the creative artists’ contributions will generate interest leading to a sustained community of supporters.”

Celebrity Auctions Tackle The Big Issues

Thirteen of the hottest celebrities in Hollywood are creating a buzz with an internet auction taking place in October, in order to raise awareness of one of the biggest and most pervasive threats to life on Earth.

Ebay Giving Works, eBay’s program dedicated to charity listings, is hosting an online auction for the WWF, with 100% of the proceeds going to the World Wildlife Fund’s global conservation initiatives, especially those involved in the fight against climate change.

The auction, which runs from October 3 -12, features a series of 100% organic T shirts emblazoned with the slogan “Hotter Than I Should Be”. The shirts, which have created much interest in the media and Hollywood as a unique way to spread the message that the Earth is warming, have all been signed by a multitude of celebrities, including Scarlett Johansson, Orlando Bloom, Rachael Ray, Harrison Ford, and Cate Blanchett.

“Global warming is the single biggest threat to our environment today,” said John Donoghue, Senior Vice President of the World Wildlife Fund. “We’re thrilled with the overwhelming celebrity support we’ve received, and we are confident this auction will not only garner funds for our work, but will encourage individuals to take action in their own lives to stop climate change.”

The WWF is a leader in the field of climate science, and is a strong and persuasive advocate for the reduction of harmful greenhouse emissions and the increase of energy efficient technologies. For more than 45 years, the non-profit organization has been working to protect nature, and now provides cutting edge scientific research into areas of concern. With a dedicated team of experts in over 50 countries, the WWF focuses on 4 particular areas of impact: creating responsible global warming policies, working with businesses to reduce carbon dioxide levels, implementing adaptation plans to help the planet respond to climate change, and protecting the forests that help mitigate climate change.

The “Hotter Than I Should Be” online auction looks set to provide some much needed funding to the WWF’s ongoing research. Many of the shirts have already reached bids of over $300, with Orlando Bloom’s attracting bids close to $800. Also up for auction on eBay Giving Works in October is a series of pink rubber bath ducks, signed and decorated by celebrities such as Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Lucy Liu, and Matthew McConaughey.

The auction has been organized by Munchkin Inc, the makers of award winning infant and toddler products, as part of their Project Pink breast cancer awareness program, and runs from October 1 to November 4. All proceeds will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a non-profit organization based in Dallas, Texas, dedicated to education and research into the causes, treatment, and the search for a cure to breast cancer.

Other celebrities to design and sign rubber duckies include Brooke Shields, Desperate Housewives’ Marcia Cross, Charlie’s Angels’ Jaclyn Smith, and former First Lady Barbara Bush. The auction is hoped to raise over $30,000, and more information can be found at www.munchkin.com/projectpink.

Brooke Shields Helps Launch Million Toy Drive

In its annual preparation for the Christmas season, US charity Toys for Tots has found a powerful ally in Toys “R” Us and a vocal supporter in actress Brooke Shields.

The retailer launched its Million Toy Drive on November 3rd, aiming to raise $4 million through in-store and online donations and to collect one million toys in retail locations across the country. All money and toy donations received in Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us stores will help needy children in the local communities where the donations are made.

Brooke Shields helped to launch the initiative, saying, “As a mom of two small children, it breaks my heart that so many kids go without even one toy at Christmas time.

“By working with Toys ‘R’ Us and Toys for Tots, I hope to encourage parents to teach their kids about the importance of giving back to their communities, while motivating everyone who can to make a donation to this incredibly worthy cause.”

Toys “R” Us customers may donate a new, unwrapped toy at any Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us store across the US until Wednesday, November 22nd. To ensure the company reaches its toy drive goal, Toys “R” Us will match each donation, toy for toy, up to one million toys.

Since its inception in 1947, Toys for Tots has touched the lives of more than 160 million children nationwide by ensuring America’s neediest children have a present to unwrap on Christmas morning.
