EMI Artists Band Together For Japan

Artists and songwriters from one of the biggest music companies in the world, EMI, have united for an incredible worldwide celebrity charity auction of personal items and memorabilia to raise funds to help the Red Cross support people affected by last month’s earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Gorillaz And Refugee Children Refocus In Syria For Charity

British band Gorillaz visited Syria last week, giving local refugee children the chance of a lifetime through UNICEF's Refocus program.

Around 20 young photographers from a refugee community in Damascus were able to meet the band and take their photographs when Gorillaz rolled into town for a live show. Gorillaz – a group created by Damon Albarn of Blur in 1998 which uses animation to perform – was excited to meet the young photographers and let them have a glimpse of a world seldom seen by refugees.

Refocus is a grassroots organization which runs participatory photography courses for minority groups and marginalized people. Refocus puts the camera into the hands of the learners, giving them the power to depict the realities of their lives, both as individuals and as groups. They aim to improve awareness of the plight of others, create dialogue in their communities and globally, empower the participant by building confidence, self esteem and hope.

Jay-Z To Headline Coachella For Charity

The 3-day Coachella music festival kicks off in Indio, California, today – with a huge number of bands raising money for charity.

Among the performers at the event will be Jay-Z, Dave Grohl's Them Crooked Vultures, Perry Farrell, Vampire Weekend, Hot Chip, Faith No More, Corinne Bailey Rae, Radiohead's Thom Yorke, Gorillaz, Little Boots and many many more.

Beneficiaries of the festival include the Silverlake Conservatory of Music – an organization established by Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea that offers children in LA access to free instruments and music lessons – and the Indio Youth Task Force, which is dedicated to creating positive opportunities for the youth of Indio.

Return of the Secret Policeman's Ball

In 1979, John Cleese headlined the first of a series of performances entitled ‘The Secret Policeman’s Ball’. The show was to raise awareness of Amnesty International UK, which it certainly achieved. Amnesty International UK stated that after the first 3 shows, public awareness of AIUK increased by 700%.

The first show starred other members of Monty Python, Billy Connolly, and it also gave Rowan Atkinson his big break. The Secret Policeman’s Ball was then made into a feature-length film.

In 1987, musical acts were added to the line-up, starring such artists as Kate Bush, Bob Geldof and Duran Duran.
