Roger Federer's Charity Initiative For Malawi

Tennis champion Roger Federer has launched a $3.3 million initiative to build schools in Malawi through his Roger Federer Foundation.

In association with Action Aid International Malawi, the tennis legend has launched a ten-year initiative to support early childhood education. The aim is to sustainably improve the quality of care and education in 80 Community Based Childcare Centers (“CBCCs”) and thus facilitate school entry for around 54,000 children between 4 and 6 years of age. The CBCCs will be gradually supported with the following measures:

800 early childhood educators are trained and coached in order to learn how to encourage, nourish and educate children

Roger Federer's Wimbledon Defeat Costly For Charity

Roger Federer’s defeat at Wimbledon today has proved doubly costly – not only has the six-time champion been defeated, but Oxfam have been denied a windfall of more than £100,000 due thanks to a bet placed placed by a man who left his estate to the charity when he died.

The original bet was £1520 on Federer to win the Wimbledon men’s singles at least 7 times before 2020 at 66/1, and Federer’s defeat against Tsonga this afternoon means Oxfam will have to wait for dividends of £101,840 from bookmaker William Hill. The good news for Oxfam is that the bet runs until 2020, meaning Federer potentially has another eight attempts to win the bet.

Mr Newlife left his entire estate to Oxfam when he died in February 2009, aged 69, which included the outcomes of the series of outstanding bets he had placed.

Sir Elton John will once again host his annual White Tie and Tiara Ball at his home in the UK next week to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Thirty years ago this month, a mysterious new illness that seemed to attack the body’s immune system was first diagnosed in the United States. Buoyed by denial, stigma and lack of understanding, HIV spread across the world infecting 60 million people and taking the lives of 30million.

Roger Federer Plans Tennis To Benefit Australian Flood Victims

After raising thousands of dollars for Haiti last year, Roger Federer hopes to hold another celebrity charity tennis match – this time to raise money for victims of Australia’s devastating floods.

Fifteen people have now been confirmed dead as flood waters continue to rise in Queensland, forcing the evacuation of thousands of people. Animals and property have been swept away in a deluge of water, leaving 74 people missing.

“The floods here in Australia are devastating,” said Federer. "I am on my way to practice now and am going to speak with Tennis Australia to see if we perhaps can organize something on Sunday to help raise some funds for the people of Queensland who have been affected.

Roger Federer And Rafael Nadal Raise $2.6 Million For Charity

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal and rival Roger Federer raised $2.6 million Tuesday night in the first of two exhibition tennis matches to raise funds for their respective foundations.

Nadal suffered a defeat to Federer in their opening clash in Zurich. The match, dubbed “Match for Africa,” raised funds for the Roger Federer Foundation.

“The focus is just solely on two players and one match,” Federer said after the match. “There was quite a pressure going into a match like this, but at the end of the day, it’s so not important who won the match tonight. It was a match for Africa, this money is going to go to a good cause — for my foundation, for kids in Africa — so I’m so proud and so happy that we all made it work, so thanks again to everybody.”

Roger Federer And Refael Nadal Serve Up Charity Portraits

The ATP has commissioned its top tennis players to create unique self-portraits to be auctioned off for charity ahead of the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on November 21-28 at London’s O2 Arena.

Each qualifying tennis-star, eight total, have been asked by the ATP to participate in this creative commission, and so far, qualifiers Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have completed their self-portraits by smashing paint-covered tennis balls at a giant canvas. Each canvas was overlaid with a stenciled image which, when removed, revealed their signature move on court.

Talking about the initiative, Nadal said that it was a challenge to put the balls on the silhouette.

Stars Give Land Mines The Boot With Celebrity Charity Auction

The Mines Advisory Group is launching a very special celebrity charity auction this week to raise money for people affected by landmines.

Stars such as Katy Perry, Pink, Shirley Bassey, Twiggy, Joanna Lumley, Nelly Furtado, Alan Shearer and Tony Blair’s wife, Cherie, have donated their shoes to the auction, which launches on July 22 and runs till August 1.

“We’ve been totally overwhelmed by the support we’ve had from celebrities who’ve given up their shoes to help those affected by conflict every day,” said MAG’s Give Landmines The Boot auction organizer Zoe Corden. "MAG chose to run a celebrity shoe auction because often its peoples’ feet that are the most at risk from landmine blasts, and the stars that donated did so to help us stamp a link between shoes and the dangers that lurk beneath them for millions worldwide.

Roger Federer Visits Ethiopia For Charity

The Roger Federer Foundation spends approximately $1 million a year on education in Ethiopia, South Africa, Tanzania, Mali, Malawi and Zimbabwe, so it’s no surprise that this week we find the Grand Slam champion visiting a school in Ethiopia where he received a hero’s welcome.

“My Mum being from South Africa is obviously the inspiration behind the foundation,” Roger Federer said, “I went there on vacation a lot when I was younger. So we started with a project in South Africa and, as I got older and got more money, I wanted to expand…when I arrived at the school and all of the children were singing, it was very emotional,” Federer told Reuters. “They sang, `Roger, our Father’ to me. I didn’t really understand it at the beginning but I still had tears in my eyes.”

Federer is hopeful that his seven-month old twin girls, Myla and Charlene, will grow up to appreciate the world around them: “I definitely want to show them that this world exists as well,” Federer said, gesturing at the tin-roofed classrooms around him, “There’s no way around it for them because I’ll be traveling. It will be a very exciting ten years for me because I’ll be trying to educate and help them and show them all these things.”

Roger Federer Leads Charity Fundraiser For Haiti

On the eve of the Australian Open, Roger Federer had his eye on more than a trophy – because three days prior, the earthquake in Haiti stuck and killed at last 200,000 people. So what’s a champ to do except hold a charity tennis match to aid relief efforts

Federer initiated and organized a mixed-doubles fundraiser that raised more than $600,000 and featured some of tennis’ top stars, wearing microphones on court and providing comedic commentary as they played.

On the court were, among others, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Kim Clijsters and Lleyton Hewitt.

Andy Murray Grants Wish For Sick Teens

Two tennis-mad teenagers have had their wish granted to attend The Championships at Wimbledon – and they met Andy Murray too!

The UK Make-A-Wish Foundation hosted two children from overseas when tennis fans 17 year old Christine McLinn, from Wisconsin, USA and Thys Kroezen, aged 15 and from the Netherlands, had their life-time wish granted to come to England and see a tennis match at the world famous Wimbledon tournament.

Christine is fighting Hodgkin’s disease and has played tennis since she was six years old. She has an expert knowledge on anything to do with tennis and her favourite female player is Serena Williams. She has had to endure chemotherapy, but she surprised medical experts by managing to win a local tennis championship within a few weeks of receiving the treatment.

Lleyton Hewitt Launches Charity Auction

Former tennis ace Lleyton Hewitt will be in Melbourne on Thursday, October 30, to promote a new charity auction.

The Cure Our Kids auction includes a range of unique items, such as the tennis racquet used by world No.1 Rafael Nadal, Ana Ivanovic’s pink tennis dress from her French Open win, as well as items from celebrities including Russell Crowe, Andre Agassi, Gwen Stefani, Toni Collette and Hugh Jackman.

“We’ve [also] got a signed shirt from Roger Federer that he actually gave me after he beat me, which is the last thing you want to see from someone who has beaten you in the locker room,” said Hewitt. “It’s been hard bringing it all together – but it’s very satisfying.”

Sir Elton John's White Tie And Tiara Party Hits The Beach

Once a year Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish throw open the doors of their exquisite Berkshire home to a sparkling array of celebrities for their annual White Tie and Tiara Ball, and last night was no different as a staggering number of stars filed into the singer’s house for this year’s much-looked-forward-to event.

More than 600 guests turned up to the beach-themed party, each paying around US$6,000 for the dinner, auction, and concert. This year’s performance came from Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson, and attendees included Bill Clinton, Elle Macpherson, Denzel Washington, Elizabeth Hurley, Michael Caine, Simon Cowell, Rod Stewart, Mischa Barton, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Gordon Ramsay, Tracey Emin, Roger Federer, Natalie Imbruglia, Kelly Osbourne, and Jemima Khan.

Sir Elton decorated his lavish garden with palm trees and sand for the party, which raised money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Last year’s event raised over $12 million for the cause, and the White Tie and Tiara Balls have made over $50 million since 1998.

Stars Sparkle for Elton John AIDS Foundation

A charity party organised by Sir Elton John has raised $12.2 million for the Elton John AIDS Foundation, and was a night to remember for all those involved.

Kate Winslet, Dame Judi Dench, and Elle Macpherson were among the 500 guests who dusted off their best clothes for the 9th annual White Tie and Tiara charity ball and auction, held on June 28 at Sir Elton’s home in Berkshire.

The theme of the night was “Las Vegas”, and the evening sparkled and shone as the celebrity party-goers wore their most stylish dresses and suits for the $6000/ticket event. Sir Elton’s house, “Woodside”, was lavishly decorated with a pink stretch cadillac, giant props from his “Red Piano” shows at Caesar’s Palace, and seven Elvis impersonators serenaded the crowd as they enjoyed a feast of “Las Vegas proportions”: truffle soufflé, followed by filet mignon with Maine lobster tail, and a giant knickerbocker glory for desert.
