Ex-Formula One Ace To Drive For Charity

Formula One fans and racing enthusiasts should head to Croft, England, in July to help change young lives.

Former Formula One driving ace Mark Blundell has confirmed he will attend the Prince’s Trust Celebrity Track Day at the Croft Raceway on July 15. The event is the last of three sporting activities – including a clay shoot and a golf tournament – to be held this year as part of ‘The Prince’s Trust Challenge Trophy’, which last year raised a huge $500,000 to support disadvantaged youngsters in the North East of England.

“I was delighted to be invited to take part in what I think is going to be a fantastic track day,” said the ex-F1 driver. “Croft is a great British motor circuit, and is challenging and rewarding in equal measure. I’m really looking forward to what should be a thoroughly entertaining charity fundraiser with an edge.”

Celebrity-led teams will compete in a series of five timed challenges, while driving F1 style single seaters, Porsches, Ferraris and buggies.

“This is not just an action-packed opportunity to have fun and raise pulses – participants will also help to raise vital funds to change the lives of many disadvantaged youngsters who deserve a second chance,” said David Beavis, North East regional director for The Prince’s Trust.

The Prince’s Trust encourages young people to take responsibility for themselves – helping them build the life they choose rather than the one they’ve ended up with. It works with those who have struggled at school, have been in care, are long-term unemployed or have been in trouble with the law, and needs to raise around $2 million per week to operate.

Mark Blundell takes part in Chariots of Fire

After starting this year’s Chariot’s Of Fire event, former Formula One driving ace, Mark Blundell will be showing his support for the East Anglian Air Ambulance by taking part in the charity run in Cambridge, United Kingdom.

Mark has recently been highlighting in the local press the fact that charities such as the Air Ambulance rely on donations in order to provide a service to the public.

“We don’t realise that if funds aren’t available, there will be no air ambulance ready to save those valuable seconds which can make the difference between life and death.”

He will be joined in the run by over 2000 other participants, which gets its name from Lord David Puttnam’s cinema classic. The event has outgrown the original route taken through the grounds of Perse School and now takes place through Cambridge’s ancient streets.

This will be a different challenge for Mark, who completed 61 races in Formula One, finishing third three times. After finishing his racing career with a crash resulting in a number of broken vertebrae, he knows well about the value of emergency treatment and is showing his support for the cause this weekend.
