Keanu Reeves To Race For Charity

Actors Keanu Reeves and Luke Wilson are among the many stars set to take to the race track in this year’s Toyota Pro/Celebrity Grand Prix.

The celebrity race has been held every year since 1977, and has attracted stars such as Gene Hackman, Jason Bateman, Rick Schroder, Stephen Baldwin, Donny Osmond, Sean Patrick Flanery, Nancy Lieberman, Daniel Goddard and Josh Brolin. Last year’s race was won by ESPN/ABC pit reporter for NASCAR Nationwide Jamie Little.

Every year, Toyota donates $5,000 to Racing for Kids, a non-profit program benefiting children’s hospitals in Southern California, in the name of each celebrity racer, and another $5,000 to the winner’s charity of choice. The car company has donated close to $1.6 million to various children’s organizations since 1991.

This year’s participants will drive Scion tCs in a 10-lap race, as part of the 35th Annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, on April 18. Other celebrities taking part this year include Adrien Brody, Alex Trebek, Tyson Beckford, Raven Symone, Jon Hamm, Tim Daly, Eric Close, 24’s Mary Lynn Rajskub, comedian Carlos Mencia and E!’s Ken Baker.

Alex Trebek to Visit Zambia with World Vision

Alex Trebek, longtime host of Jeopardy! and supporter of humanitarian organization World Vision, will visit the southern Africa nation of Zambia from June 28 –
July 2.

He and his family will meet children and adults benefiting from a
wide variety of programs and interventions that the Trebeks are supporting in the Kapululwe region, near Lusaka, the capital of Zambia.

Throughout Zambia, many parents have died of AIDS and many are living with the disease. Approximately 20 percent of the population is infected. AIDS not only tears families apart, it often affects a family’s health, a child’s future, and a community’s access to a reliable food supply, education, and economic development.

After several years of special projects with World Vision, broadcast throughout the United States and Canada, Trebek expressed interest to World Vision in bringing significant change to a particular village. This resulted in Trebek’s comprehensive support of Kabeleka, a specific community of Kapululwe, which is deeply impacting the physical and educational well-being of thousands of children and families.

Critically needed improvements supported by Trebek have included the building of a school and two teachers’ houses, seven boreholes providing clean water, a new rural health center, immunization and treatment of multiple childhood diseases, and microenterprise loans and business coaching. Trebek’s family visit will include a celebration of the official
opening of these services in Kabeleka.

“There are so many important ways to change a life, or many lives, through World Vision,” explains Trebek. “Our family has chosen Kabeleka, and we hope others will join us in exploring ways that they can help children lead healthy lives of learning and pursuing their potential.”

While in Zambia, the Trebeks will also visit sites outside of Kabeleka where conditions remain dire, and where World Vision is organizing community care coalitions and volunteer caregivers to serve people living with HIV/AIDS.

Stars Deliver For Literacy Charities

Kate Winslet, Margaret Atwood, Jonathan Pryce and Phil Collins are among 40 celebrities who have donated their time and artistic skills to the UK Pitney Bowes Pushing the Envelope campaign.

The stars have each decorated an envelope in order to raise funds for the National Literacy Trust, and the unique framed art is available on eBay until the 20th of October.

This is the third year that the campaign has taken place, and organisers are hoping it will be as successful as last year’s auction, which raised over £11,000 for the Trust.

Pushing the Envelope usually involves simultaneous auctions around the world, with the money raised in each country going to support local literacy programs. This year Katie Melua has created an envelope for the auction taking place in France, which benefits Asmae and their work with children in the Phillipines.

In past years Pitney Bowes has sponsored auctions in the U.S. and Canada as well, featuring art from Halle Berry, Mike Myers, Lindsay Lohan and Sharon Stone for the U.S. auctions, and from Alex Trebek and Wayne Gretzky in the Canadian events. The charities to benefit from those auctions included First Book, the National Center for Family Literacy, ProLiteracy Worldwide, Reading Is Fundamental, and ABC CANADA Literacy Foundation.
