Stars Swing For Charity

Chevy Chase and Alec Baldwin took their chance to swing for charity on Saturday, August 16, when they competed in the annual Artists & Writers Softball Game in East Hampton.

In what started as an evenly matched game, Chase turned the tide in favor of the Artists team when it was down 2-0 to eventually win 4-2, their second win in two years. Baldwin acted as umpire for the game. This year marked the 60th anniversary of the annual game, a tradition started by artists including Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning.

The event raised $60,000 for three charities – the East End Hospice, the East Hampton Day Care Centre, and Phoenix House – a facility that specializes in drug rehabilitation.

Chase and Baldwin were joined by celebrities such as Kim Stolz, Lori Singer, Mort Zuckerman, Jeffrey Lyons, and Mark Green. They join a long list of stars who have taken part in the game over the last 60 years, including Paul Simon, Christie Brinkley, Dustin Hoffman, Alan Alda, Pelé, and Bill Clinton. This year’s game was played in memory of actor Roy Scheider, a veteran of the Artists team, who died in February at age 75.

New York City has made itself some celebrity friends, and for the third summer in a row they are going to be out and about encouraging New Yorkers to volunteer.

New York Cares was founded by a group of friends who wanted to take action against the serious social issues facing the Big Apple. Their goal was to meet pressing community needs by mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer service – and this continues to be their mission today. They bring vital volunteer support to more than 850 nonprofit agencies, public schools and other deserving organizations throughout the five boroughs of New York, and help nearly 400,000 disadvantaged New Yorkers every year.

The organization has just launched their celebrity advertising campaign – which features Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Smits, Alec Baldwin, and Penny Marshall in a series of posters and ads throughout the city – in a bid to coax more people into giving up their time to help others.

“One of our long-term goals is for everyone to know New York Cares and support what we stand for — that all New Yorkers can make our city stronger by helping their neighbors in need,” said Colleen Farrell, Senior Director of Marketing and Communications. “To help us get the word out, we approached New York celebrities who care deeply about our city. We are grateful to Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Smits, Alec Baldwin and Penny Marshall for their support of this year’s campaign.”

The ads will appear in subways, phone kiosks, taxis, billboards, and in popular magazines and newspapers including The New York Times, Elle Décor, Martha Stewart Living, US News & World Report, TIME, and The New York Observer.

As previously reported, Jerry Seinfeld will perform in a benefit concert on June 2 at Madison Square Garden. The highly-anticipated show will be hosted by Alec Baldwin, and accompanied by an online auction to benefit Stand Up For A Cure.

Stand Up For A Cure’s strategy in eradicating lung cancer begins with the development of relationships. By creating meaningful partnerships with people in the entertainment industry, they gain high-profile artists who donate their time and talent. This brings much-needed attention and funding to their cause. By creating meaningful relationships with researchers, this funding is directed to the programs that show the best results and hope for progress in lung cancer research and improved treatments.

The key, Stand Up For A Cure believes, is in public awareness. Lung cancer research is seriously under-funded, in part because public opinion believes that lung cancer is a smoker’s disease, even though 60% of the newly-diagnosed don’t smoke or have never smoked. The use of celebrities on TV, radio, in print and on the Internet helps to bolster awareness, and so do their concerts. Next in line after Seinfeld is Brian Wilson in July, Dave Matthews Band in September, and Andrea Bocelli in the fall.

Seinfeld has performed previously for Stand Up For A Cure, campaigning against the cancer that kills 450 Americans every day. According to the non-profit’s website, a new case of lung cancer is diagnosed every 3 minutes and carries a 5-year survival rate of only 14%.

They say that laughter is the best medicine, and this June Jerry Seinfeld will prove the proverb when he performs a one-night-only charity gig at Madison Square Garden.

The 53-year-old comedian will bring his special brand of stand-up to the Wamu Theatre in New York on June 2 for a show benefiting Stand Up For A Cure, a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating lung cancer. Tickets for the concert, which will be hosted by Alec Baldwin, cost $350 for general admission and are available through Ticketmaster.

The show will be accompanied by an online auction at Charity Buzz, which will also raise money for patient care, public awareness, and research into lung cancer. The auction will run from May 20 to June 11, and items will be announced closer to the time.

Stand Up For A Cure has also revealed they are organizing concerts from ex-Beach Boy Brian Wilson, the Dave Matthews Band, and Andrea Bocelli later this year. Tickets are available from their website.

Former Agent 007 Pierce Brosnan will put his skiing skills to the test in January, joining a host of other celebrities as part of a charity fundraiser in Canada.

The Fairmont Banff Springs Celebrity Sports Invitational will be held at the Sunshine Village Ski Resort from January 17 to 20, and will involve stars such as Leslie Nielsen, Christie Brinkley, Alec Baldwin, and Tim Robbins.

The event, which has been held annually since 1987, will benefit the Waterkeeper Alliance, an organization founded by Robert J. Kennedy, Jr to protect North American waterways. Four days of skiing will be held on the slopes, in which members of the public can ski alongside celebrities, followed by a concert by former Doobie Brother Michael McDonald, a gala dinner, and an auction.

Tickets to the gala cost $500, and can be purchased from the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Other stars to attend the event include Jason Priestley, Kelsey Grammer, Josie Bissett, and Elle Driver.

Baldwin Brothers Behind Breast Cancer Auction

A private falconry lesson with Robert Kennedy Jr is just one of the more unusual items up for grabs in a new online auction this month, with the proceeds going to a charity set up by a brave woman who wants to benefit others affected by a deadly disease.

Actor William Baldwin is behind the auction, which is being held on the Charity Folks website until the end of October. Twenty unique and once in a lifetime items are on auction to raise funds for the Carol M. Baldwin Cancer Research Fund, a charity set up by Baldwin’s mother after she underwent a double mastectomy in 1996. The 70 year old turned her tragedy into courage to assist other women who are affected by breast cancer, and the Fund, which has raised over $2.6 million since its inception, donates money to researchers investigating the causes, prevention, and treatment of the disease. Both William Baldwin and his brother, Alec Baldwin, sit on the board of the Fund.

“I was very lucky to get a significant number of people on board and committed,” said Baldwin, who approached many of his friends to donate items to the auction. “I think that sort of created somewhat of an aura, where people were like, ‘You know, I want to be in on this’.”

The 44 year old star of movies such as Backdraft and the current ABC series Dirty Sexy Money has certainly managed to attract an impressive amount of friends. Lots include a day on the campaign trail with Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of presidential candidate John Edwards, an afternoon playing pool with Baldwin and Chevy Chase at Chevy’s home, a walk-on role in the series “30 Rock” with Alec Baldwin, backstage passes to concerts with Melissa Etheridge and Sheryl Crow, as well as front row seats to The Police live at Madison Square Garden in New York. Sting has also donated an autographed bass guitar, and Bruce Springsteen has supplied an autographed CD set. A number of vacation and dinner packages are also on offer.
