Stars To Bowl In Their PJs For Charity

Actor Jason Gedrick will host a charity bowling night with a difference on Saturday, February 13.

In association with the Carol M. Baldwin Cancer Research Fund, celebrities such as Daniel and Stephen Baldwin, Joe Mantegna, Gilles Marini and others will converge on the Pinz Bowling Center on Ventura Blvd for a night of “Pajama bowling”.

Wearing nothing but their PJ’s and nighties, the guests will spend the night bowling after dark to benefit charity. The Carol M. Baldwin Cancer Research Fund was set up by the Baldwin brothers after their mother after she underwent a double mastectomy in 1996. The 70-year-old turned her tragedy into courage to assist other women who are affected by breast cancer, and the Fund, which has raised over $2.6 million since its inception, donates money to researchers investigating the causes, prevention, and treatment of the disease. Both William Baldwin and his brother, Alec Baldwin, sit on the board of the Fund.

Help Celebrities Make A Bid To Save The World

Christie’s International has announced it will hold a new green auction it has dubbed “A Bid to Save the Earth.”

This first-of-its-kind charity auction will take place on April 22, 2010, to coincide with the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. The Evening Sale event will be held at Christie’s, Rockefeller Center, New York and be carried live globally via Christie’s LIVE on www.christies.com. Proceeds from the sale will be divided among four leading not-for-profit environmental organizations: Conservation International, Oceana, Natural Resources Defense Council and the Central Park Conservancy.

Alec Baldwin Hits The Slopes For Charity

Alec Baldwin wasn’t in Hollywood to receive his Golden Globe for 30 Rock on Sunday – he was busy at a charity event in Alberta.

The star took part in the Fairmont Banff Spring Sports Invitational – held annually since 1987 – to benefit the Waterkeeper Alliance, an organization founded by Robert J. Kennedy, Jr to protect North American waterways. Four days of skiing were held on the slopes, in which members of the public could ski alongside celebrities.

Previous years have seen Pierce Brosnan, Jason Priestley, Kelsey Grammer, Josie Bissett, and Elle Driver hit the slopes for the event.

Alec Baldwin Donates $1 Million To Scholarship Fund

New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts has just established a new scholarship for autumn 2010 students called The Alec Baldwin Drama Scholarship, thanks to a million dollar donation from Alec Baldwin.

Baldwin says he believes in giving back to institutions that give us opportunities, and he has high praise for his alma mater, but he sees certain qualities in people as key to success as well.

“The support I received from Tisch made it possible for me to become an actor and to have a career in this business,” said Baldwin. “I believe that in addition to excellent training, achievement of one’s goals in the performing arts requires an unwavering work ethic, development of leadership skills, willingness to collaborate, the ability to tolerate risk, and the capacity to work with constructive criticism.”

The Tisch arts school was renamed after the generous donator of an important piece of real estate in 1982, which is where most of the school’s programs are held. The fitting locations of the three Tisch School buildings, in the heart of Greenwich Village, are close to many of New York’s theatres, art galleries, museums, music halls and cinemas.

“All incoming undergraduate students who exhibit high artistic and academic performance and demonstrate financial need will automatically be considered,” for the new scholarship, says the Tisch website.

Grateful Dead Top Charity Auction Earner For 2009

Top celebrity charity auction site Charity Folks has named its top celebrity earners for 2009, and the list is an eclectic mix of old and new.

The top charity earner for 2009 has surprised many people, but is a testament to longevity in the music business. Ever since the Grateful Dead began its legendary career nearly 45 years ago, the band has supported worthy causes that serve to raise awareness, lend support, and make this world a better place. Continuing this long-standing tradition of community service that has been a hallmark of the Dead and the Deadhead community, The Dead, known as one of the greatest touring bands of all time, partnered with Charity Folks to auction a limited number of tickets to their 2009 shows.

The auctions raised over $400,000 for a number of charities, including the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

Coming in second on the list by raising $300,000 through charity auctions were the Jonas Brothers. The trio of siblings raised money by auctioning meet-and-greets and other experiences to benefit their Change for the Children Foundation.

Other stars to make the list this year included Taylor Swift, Dave Matthews, Bette Midler, Larry David, Alec Baldwin and Bruce Springsteen.

Artists & Writers To Swing For Charity Again

Phoenix House is delighted to announce that once again they will benefit from the Artists & Writers Charity Softball Game.

The 61st annual Hamptons rite of summer will feature a lineup that includes: Alec Baldwin, Christie Brinkley, Carl Bernstein, Mort Zuckerman, Lori Singer, B. Smith, Dan Gasby, Greg Bello, Ken Auletta, James Lipton, Jeffrey Lyons, Juliet Papa, Edward Nahem, Kim Stolz, Bonnie Bernstein, Mark Ciardi, Rod Gilbert, Mike Lupica, Bert Sugar, Richard Reeves, and many more to come.

The event, which last year drew a crowd of over 2,000 spectators, will take place on August 15, 2009 in East Hampton’s Herrick Park. Celebrity batting practice will begin at 1 pm, and the Home Run Derby, sponsored by U.S. Sports Film Festival, will begin at 2 pm. The players will take the field at 3 pm. A donation of $10 is suggested for spectators. Students from the Phoenix Academy of Long Island will be selling hot dogs and other concession items.

“I was proud to serve as umpire for this event more summers ago than I care to admit,” said former President Bill Clinton, in a letter to the organizers. “I know firsthand how much fun it is, and how dedicated the players, spectators, and organizers are to being good neighbors and contributors to their community. The Artists & Writers Charity Softball Game first started at a picnic in the summer of 1948, in Wilfrid Zogbaum’s front yard. The event has grown to include notable politicians, actors, musicians, publishers, editors, and television personalities, and is a beloved event of every East Hampton summer.

Over the years, spectators have watched as Bill Clinton, Rudy Giuliani, Chevy Chase, Jackson Pollock, and many others have battled on the ball field. The casual setting, dedicated fans, and a decidedly competitive match make for some great summer entertainment.

Paul McCartney Launches Meat Free Mondays

Sir Paul McCartney is spearheading a campaign to encourage people to “go vegetarian” for at least one day every week. Meat Free Monday is a food campaign to encourage the world to help slow climate change by reducing their meat consumption by having one meat free day a week.

The former Beatle is leading the star-studded campaign that includes Stella McCartney, Yoko Ono, Kelly Osbourne, Moby, Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, Ricky Gervais, Chris Martin of Coldplay, Sheryl Crow, artist Jeff Koons and chefs Yotam Ottolenghi and Giorgio Locatelli.

“I think many of us feel helpless in the face of environmental challenges, and it can be hard to know how to sort through the advice about what we can do to make a meaningful contribution to a cleaner, more sustainable, healthier world,” said McCartney. “Having one designated meat free day a week is actually a meaningful change that everyone can make, that goes to the heart of several important political, environmental and ethical issues all at once. For instance it not only addresses pollution, but better health, the ethical treatment of animals, global hunger and community and political activism.”

The UK’s Food Climate Research Network states that food production is responsible for between 20-30 percent of global green house gas emissions. The United Nations has supported the figures, saying that the livestock sector is ‘one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global’.

“A couple of years ago the United Nations came out with a report that said for people to eat less meat would have a big impact on the environment,” McCartney told Sky News. “It’s all got a bit out of hand and I think people want to do their bit to bring it back into line, and this is an answer we’ve got involved in. A few years ago you’d say to people recycling is good. And they’d stick it all in one bin anyway. I mean I was the same. Now you don’t see that. You go round to people’s houses and they’ve got the bins and stuff. I think the time is right now for that idea.”

The Meat Free Monday campaign states that meat consumption has quadrupled since 1961, and poultry consumption has increased 10-fold.

“The reality is a lot of people don’t eat meat every day,” said Stella McCartney. “You don’t have to be a vegetarian to cut out one day of meat consumption. It’s something anyone can do.”

“I thought this was a great idea,” Sir Paul told reporters at the campaign’s official launch yesterday. “To just reduce your meat intake maybe by one day a week and this would seriously benefit the planet. It’s kind of easy to do. You’ve had too much over the weekend anyway and you’re all running down to the gym to try and work it off – so just have a meat-free Monday.”

Advocacy organization Death Penalty Focus is to hold its annual Awards Gala on Thursday, May 21, with some high profile guests slated to attend.

The 18th Annual Awards Dinner will honor Bill Richardson, Governor of New Mexico; John Van de Kamp, former Attorney General of California; Nancy Miller, creator of TV series Saving Grace; and several others. Stella McCartney Honored By NRDC

Fashion designer Stella McCartney was honored by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) last week at their 11th annual Forces for Nature benefit, for her refusal to use leather or fur in her designs.

“We believe it is important to honor individuals who understand that environmental stewardship can and should play a role in the work they do and the products they produce,” said NRDC President Frances Beinecke in a press release. “Both Stella McCartney and David Zaslav demonstrate that you can be protectors of the environment and leaders of industry at the same time. Their trailblazing work in the environmental arena raises the bar, and we hope everyone in the media and fashion world will take note and follow their lead.”

In speaking out for fur- and leather-free fashion, McCartney says she would like to see an end to the 50 million animals that are killed each year to support the fashion industry. Besides the myth that the animals are all by-products of the meat industry, there are other environmental impacts that she pointed out, such as the water and chemicals needed to tan leather.

The Benefit’s universal theme was all about green. Not only did actor Alec Baldwin, who was MC for the event, arrive in a hybrid SUV, but the menu featured local, organically-grown, sustainably harvested ingredients, the wine was organic and there was no bottled water. All these little things had a big impact.

“It’s a real honor for me,” said McCartney, “to receive this award from such a worthy organization like the NRDC, fighting to preserve our planet’s future.”

Stars Raise Cash In Celebrity Charity Smackdown

South by Southwest (SXSW, Inc.) is a private company based in Austin, Texas, dedicated to building and delivering conference and festival events for entertainment and related media industry professionals. Since 1987, SXSW has produced the internationally recognized Music and Media Conference & Festival and this year they’ve added a new twist.

SXSW, in conjunction with PayPay, have kicked off the first ever social-media smackdown and charity fundraiser at Mashable and Blurb’s SXSW Bash at Six Lounge in Austin.

Here’s how it works: PayPal has challenged nine celebrity teams to raise the most money for their chosen charities via social media sites and blogs. Fans can help by copying their favorite celebrity’s PayPal fundraising widget to their MySpace pages, Facebook page, or personal Web sites to encourage friends to donate.

The ‘Smackdown’ runs March 16-26, when PayPal will announce the winner and make an additional donation to the winning celebrity’s charity of choice.

Participating celebrities include Alec Baldwin, who is raising money for the Actors Fund of America.

“The Actors Fund is the pre-eminent organization for assisting all of my friends and colleagues in performing arts and entertainment around the country,” said Alec Baldwin, star of NBC television program “30 Rock.” “Most of those who work in this business are not stars – they’re working professionals who have no place else to turn when times are difficult. Stars Go Downhill For Charity

Alec Baldwin was one of a host of stars spotted on the ski slopes at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Sports Invitational in support of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Waterkeeper Alliance during the weekend.

The annual event raises funds to protect North American and Canadian waterways, and regularly raises over $1 million. The event was first held in 1986, and has gone on to become one of the most popular celebrity skiing events, attracting stars such as Pierce Brosnan, Christie Brinkley and Tim Robbins.

This year’s event is believed to have been attended by Glenn Close, Beau Bridges, Tom Cochrane, Peter Fonda, John McEnroe and Chad Lowe. Also spotted making their way down the slopes were ER star Juliana Margulies, former Beverly Hills 90210 actor Ian Ziering, Olympic gold medalist Al Joyner, Sopranos actor Joe Pantoliano and environmental warrior and actor Ed Begley Jr..

“For the Canadian groups, this has been the primary fuel for our growth in Canada,” said Mark Mattson, president of Lake Ontario Waterkeeper and the Canadian representative to Waterkeeper Alliance’s board of directors. “Kennedy has put more and more money into our groups. The event has really built a base in Canada to bring people in to get to know Kennedy and his message.”

Kristen Johnston Bares Her Soul - And More - For PETA

Former 3rd Rock From The Sun actress Kristen Johnston has appeared in a sexy new advert for PETA.

The 41-year-old actress has stripped off for the ad and appears in a Lady Godiva-type pose on horseback in a bid to stop New York’s horse-and-carriage industry. She joins a host of other stars who have already raised awareness of the plight of the horses used to tow carriages around Central Park, including Pink, Chrissie Hynde, and Alec Baldwin.

According to PETA: “Horses used in the horse-drawn carriage industry are deprived of everything that is natural and important to them. These gentle, social animals are denied the opportunity to socialize with other horses, graze in fields, and run free.”

“I was blown away by how these horses live, or actually I should say, don’t live,” said Johnston. “The horses go from this horrible job, where they’re pulling people through the streets of Manhattan all day, to this tiny jail cell in this building that’s like a cramped parking garage. I’d say to tourists considering coming to New York, there’s so much amazing stuff to do here. But please do something else. Go ice-skating, see a show, go shopping. I hope within the next year that there are no more horse-drawn carriages.”

The advertising campaign will debut in Central Park on Thursday, November 20, and has drawn support from New York City council member Dan Garodnick, who aims to phase out horse-drawn carriages and replace them with eco-friendly “horseless carriages.”

Comedy Celebration To Raise Money For Myeloma Research

Ray Romano is set to host the International Myeloma Foundation’s second annual Comedy Celebration tomorrow night, November 15.

The event will kick off at 6pm at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre and Club on South Lucerne Boulevard with a cocktail reception and silent auction, with the comedy show starting at 8pm. The evening promises to deliver hilarious performances from Patricia Heaton, Jeff Garlin, Kevin James, Robert Klein, Doris Roberts, and Fred Willard, and will also feature the original one-and-only Blues Brothers – AKA Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi.

Proceeds from the evening will go to the Peter Boyle Memorial Fund at the International Myeloma Foundation, dedicated to fighting the deadly cancer of the bone marrow for which there is currently no known cure.

Honorary chairs of the event include Alec and William Baldwin, Halle Berry, Candice Bergen, Kim Cattrall, Ted Danson, Mariska Hargitay, Ethan Hawke, Michael Keaton, Robin Leach, Bette Midler, and many others.

Chevy Chase and Alec Baldwin took their chance to swing for charity on Saturday, August 16, when they competed in the annual Artists & Writers Softball Game in East Hampton.

In what started as an evenly matched game, Chase turned the tide in favor of the Artists team when it was down 2-0 to eventually win 4-2, their second win in two years. Baldwin acted as umpire for the game. This year marked the 60th anniversary of the annual game, a tradition started by artists including Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning.

The event raised $60,000 for three charities – the East End Hospice, the East Hampton Day Care Centre, and Phoenix House – a facility that specializes in drug rehabilitation.

Chase and Baldwin were joined by celebrities such as Kim Stolz, Lori Singer, Mort Zuckerman, Jeffrey Lyons, and Mark Green. They join a long list of stars who have taken part in the game over the last 60 years, including Paul Simon, Christie Brinkley, Dustin Hoffman, Alan Alda, Pelé, and Bill Clinton. This year’s game was played in memory of actor Roy Scheider, a veteran of the Artists team, who died in February at age 75.

New York City has made itself some celebrity friends, and for the third summer in a row they are going to be out and about encouraging New Yorkers to volunteer.

New York Cares was founded by a group of friends who wanted to take action against the serious social issues facing the Big Apple. Their goal was to meet pressing community needs by mobilizing caring New Yorkers in volunteer service – and this continues to be their mission today. They bring vital volunteer support to more than 850 nonprofit agencies, public schools and other deserving organizations throughout the five boroughs of New York, and help nearly 400,000 disadvantaged New Yorkers every year.

The organization has just launched their celebrity advertising campaign – which features Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Smits, Alec Baldwin, and Penny Marshall in a series of posters and ads throughout the city – in a bid to coax more people into giving up their time to help others.

“One of our long-term goals is for everyone to know New York Cares and support what we stand for — that all New Yorkers can make our city stronger by helping their neighbors in need,” said Colleen Farrell, Senior Director of Marketing and Communications. “To help us get the word out, we approached New York celebrities who care deeply about our city. We are grateful to Whoopi Goldberg, Jimmy Smits, Alec Baldwin and Penny Marshall for their support of this year’s campaign.”

The ads will appear in subways, phone kiosks, taxis, billboards, and in popular magazines and newspapers including The New York Times, Elle Décor, Martha Stewart Living, US News & World Report, TIME, and The New York Observer.

As previously reported, Jerry Seinfeld will perform in a benefit concert on June 2 at Madison Square Garden. The highly-anticipated show will be hosted by Alec Baldwin, and accompanied by an online auction to benefit Stand Up For A Cure.

Stand Up For A Cure’s strategy in eradicating lung cancer begins with the development of relationships. By creating meaningful partnerships with people in the entertainment industry, they gain high-profile artists who donate their time and talent. This brings much-needed attention and funding to their cause. By creating meaningful relationships with researchers, this funding is directed to the programs that show the best results and hope for progress in lung cancer research and improved treatments.

The key, Stand Up For A Cure believes, is in public awareness. Lung cancer research is seriously under-funded, in part because public opinion believes that lung cancer is a smoker’s disease, even though 60% of the newly-diagnosed don’t smoke or have never smoked. The use of celebrities on TV, radio, in print and on the Internet helps to bolster awareness, and so do their concerts. Next in line after Seinfeld is Brian Wilson in July, Dave Matthews Band in September, and Andrea Bocelli in the fall.

Seinfeld has performed previously for Stand Up For A Cure, campaigning against the cancer that kills 450 Americans every day. According to the non-profit’s website, a new case of lung cancer is diagnosed every 3 minutes and carries a 5-year survival rate of only 14%.

They say that laughter is the best medicine, and this June Jerry Seinfeld will prove the proverb when he performs a one-night-only charity gig at Madison Square Garden.

The 53-year-old comedian will bring his special brand of stand-up to the Wamu Theatre in New York on June 2 for a show benefiting Stand Up For A Cure, a non-profit organization dedicated to eradicating lung cancer. Tickets for the concert, which will be hosted by Alec Baldwin, cost $350 for general admission and are available through Ticketmaster.

The show will be accompanied by an online auction at Charity Buzz, which will also raise money for patient care, public awareness, and research into lung cancer. The auction will run from May 20 to June 11, and items will be announced closer to the time.

Stand Up For A Cure has also revealed they are organizing concerts from ex-Beach Boy Brian Wilson, the Dave Matthews Band, and Andrea Bocelli later this year. Tickets are available from their website.

Former Agent 007 Pierce Brosnan will put his skiing skills to the test in January, joining a host of other celebrities as part of a charity fundraiser in Canada.

The Fairmont Banff Springs Celebrity Sports Invitational will be held at the Sunshine Village Ski Resort from January 17 to 20, and will involve stars such as Leslie Nielsen, Christie Brinkley, Alec Baldwin, and Tim Robbins.

The event, which has been held annually since 1987, will benefit the Waterkeeper Alliance, an organization founded by Robert J. Kennedy, Jr to protect North American waterways. Four days of skiing will be held on the slopes, in which members of the public can ski alongside celebrities, followed by a concert by former Doobie Brother Michael McDonald, a gala dinner, and an auction.

Tickets to the gala cost $500, and can be purchased from the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. Other stars to attend the event include Jason Priestley, Kelsey Grammer, Josie Bissett, and Elle Driver.

A private falconry lesson with Robert Kennedy Jr is just one of the more unusual items up for grabs in a new online auction this month, with the proceeds going to a charity set up by a brave woman who wants to benefit others affected by a deadly disease.

Actor William Baldwin is behind the auction, which is being held on the Charity Folks website until the end of October. Twenty unique and once in a lifetime items are on auction to raise funds for the Carol M. Baldwin Cancer Research Fund, a charity set up by Baldwin’s mother after she underwent a double mastectomy in 1996. The 70 year old turned her tragedy into courage to assist other women who are affected by breast cancer, and the Fund, which has raised over $2.6 million since its inception, donates money to researchers investigating the causes, prevention, and treatment of the disease. Both William Baldwin and his brother, Alec Baldwin, sit on the board of the Fund.

“I was very lucky to get a significant number of people on board and committed,” said Baldwin, who approached many of his friends to donate items to the auction. “I think that sort of created somewhat of an aura, where people were like, ‘You know, I want to be in on this’.”

The 44 year old star of movies such as Backdraft and the current ABC series Dirty Sexy Money has certainly managed to attract an impressive amount of friends. Lots include a day on the campaign trail with Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of presidential candidate John Edwards, an afternoon playing pool with Baldwin and Chevy Chase at Chevy’s home, a walk-on role in the series “30 Rock” with Alec Baldwin, backstage passes to concerts with Melissa Etheridge and Sheryl Crow, as well as front row seats to The Police live at Madison Square Garden in New York. Sting has also donated an autographed bass guitar, and Bruce Springsteen has supplied an autographed CD set. A number of vacation and dinner packages are also on offer.
