Elton John Dedicates Song To Michael Jackson At Charity Bash

Elton John held his 11th annual White Tie & Tiara Ball to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation on Thursday, June 25.

Held at his Windsor mansion, “Woodside”, the party featured entertainment by Justin Timberlake and attracted guests such as Sam Taylor Wood, Damien Hirst, Elizabeth Hurley, Kate Beckinsale, Shirley Bassey, Lily Allen, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Natalie Imbruglia, David Walliams, Geri Halliwell, Lily Cole and Erin O’Connor.

The annual ball has raised over £27 million since its inception, with last week’s event raising £4 million.

Sir Elton reportedly was told about the death of Michael Jackson during the evening, and dedicated a version of Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me to the singer.

Heidi Klum Fronts Oxfam Campaign

Oxfam has launched a new campaign to encourage people to recycle clothing.

The Sustain Me campaign features famous faces such as Heidi Klum, Natalie Imbruglia, Cat Deeley and Jourdan Dunn in a series of looks designed by stylist Katie Shillingford using clothing handpicked from Oxfam’s recycling plant Wastesaver.

“I just love the idea of recycling clothing,” said Klum. “To give those once cherished items a longer existence is just great. It’s also an essential tool for Oxfam to continue tackling poverty in the world.”

Research by the M&S and Oxfam Clothes Exchange partnership has discovered that 75% of consumers have at some time in their lives purchased an item of clothing and never worn it. A further 25% of people “admit to hoarding clothes finding them either too difficult to give away or assuming that they’ll come back in to fashion at some point.”

“Katie Shillingford has created a combination of classic, timeless and directional looks for this campaign, showing just how original you can be with sustainable fashion from your local Oxfam,” said Sarah Farquhar, Head of Retail Operations at Oxfam. “Our shops offer great value for money and give you the chance to create and express your own personal style. In addition to highlighting your sustainable fashion credentials, your purchases will raise vital funds for Oxfam’s work tackling poverty. In the current economic climate, Oxfam needs donations more than ever. Every item we sell allows Oxfam to provide help where it is needed most, so we’re asking people to have a rummage through their wardrobes and, even if they only pick out one item, bring the clothing they no longer want in to us at Oxfam. Celebrities Give Big To Australian Fire Victims

Canadian music legend Leonard Cohen has donated money to the victims of the terrible fires raging across southern Australia.

The fires have already claimed over 180 lives and almost 1,000 homes around Melbourne, and authorities fear the death rate could rise to over 300. Cohen, who is currently on tour in the country with Aussie icon Paul Kelly, has come to the aid of the thousands of homeless victims with a donation of AUS$200,000 (US$134,000).

“Leonard has loved his time in Australia on this tour and is shocked and deeply saddened by the news of the fires,” said tour promoter Michael Gudinski. “Leonard, Paul, their touring parties and everyone at AEGLive UK and The Frontier Touring Company wish to extend their heartfelt sympathies to those that have suffered the loss of loved ones or their homes through this terrible tragedy.”

The musicians are also collecting money from fans at their concerts.

Kylie Minogue is also reportedly considering hosting a benefit gig with her sister Dannii and fellow Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia in London.

“I think we should definitely talk about doing something like a fundraiser for those affected by the bushfires,” said Imbruglia.

The Australian and New Zealand teams have also stepped up to help and raised $6 million for the relief appeal at a one-day game in Adelaide on Tuesday night.

“We’ve actually decided as a group that we’re going to fly to Melbourne and get on a team coach and go out to Whittlesea and spend a few hours there to try and make things a fraction easier if we can,” said Australian cricket captain Ricky Ponting.

Natalie Imbruglia Says No To Fur In PETA Campaign

Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia is the latest celebrity to pose for anti-fur advertisements for PETA.

The 33-year-old singer appears in a new campaign about the “tortuous” methods used to kill animals for fur. Pictured cuddling a very fluffy rabbit in a photo shot recently in London by celebrity photographer Karl Grant, Imbruglia was extremely excited about the campaign. But her plans to do a live launch were hindered by her recording commitments.

“There is no kind way to rip the skin off animals’ backs,” she said. “In the wild, animals are caught in snares and steel-jaw traps that slam down on their limbs – they often cut down to the bone and mutilate animals’ legs and paws… Anyone who wears any fur shares the blame for the torture and gruesome deaths of millions of animals each year.”

Richard Branson's Rock The Kasbah Event Tonight

For once, Sir Richard Branson will not be on stage at his Virgin Unite charity’s Rock The Kasbah event in Los Angeles later tonight, October 23. The business mogul and adventurer is sea-bound in a bid to beat a transatlantic sailing record.

The event will instead be hosted by Dancing With The Stars’ Samantha Harris and will feature performances by Natalie Imbruglia and Island Def Jam recording artist Jon McLaughlin.

The night will include a Moroccan dinner and an auction of epic proportions that will include items such as the chance to stay at Branson’s luxury game park in South Africa, race an Astin Martin around the California, name one of Virgin’s new A320 Airbuses, spend a week on Branson’s Private Paradise in the Virgin Islands, and much more.

Proceeds from the evening will go to Virgin Unite’s domestic and international programs, including the Eve Branson Foundation, set up by Sir Richard’s mother to help women in Morocco generate their own incomes to support their families, and the REGeneration initiative in the US, which helps homeless young people.

Last year’s Rock The Kasbah event – which Sir Richard described as “one of the best parties I’ve ever been to” – was attended by a who’s who of the celebrity world, including Jewel, Rachel Hunter, and Buzz Aldrin.

Some famous names from British entertainment are lending their faces to a new advertising campaign targeting breast cancer.

Natalie Imbruglia, Anna Friel, Alan Carr, Edith Bowman, and Twiggy have been shot by acclaimed photographer Rankin wearing Fashion Targets Breast Cancer T-shirts for the campaign from Breakthrough Breast Cancer – the UK’s leading charity fighting breast cancer. The campaign aims to raise £1 million (US$2 million) to assist with research, campaigning, and education about the disease which kills around 35 women every day in the UK.

The campaign’s message is “Whatever your reason, wear one,” and each celebrity taking part has agreed to send themselves up by featuring their own comic reason. In the ads, which can be seen on Breakthrough’s website, Alan Carr jokes that the T-shirt shows off his man boobs, and Natalie Imbruglia admits that she is supporting FTBC because she has a thing about pastel colours. However, they also all see the serious side of the disease which affects 44,000 women in the UK every year.

“As a woman, I feel it is important to support this wonderful campaign,” said Imbruglia. “I was shocked when I saw the latest UK figures – 1 in 9 women are diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their lifetime. The Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign makes so much sense. All you have to do, like me, is buy a T-shirt and wear it with pride. You will be helping to build on the £8.5 million already raised by this fantastic campaign to help Breakthrough Breast Cancer continue its crucial research, campaigning and education work. Breakthrough’s vision is a future free from the fear of breast cancer. I really do believe that together we can help Breakthrough achieve this. I can only reiterate what this year’s advertising campaign is saying: whatever your reason – please please wear one.”

A range of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer clothing – including T-shirts, swimwear, and accessories – will be available at stores such as Marks and Spencer, Topshop, and River Island. The range will also be available from the FTBC website. The campaign is Breakthrough Breast Cancer’s premier fundraising campaign and has raised over £8.5 million over the last 11 years. The money raised by this year’s campaign will go towards projects like the Triple Negative Trial – the first UK-based clinical trial to improve the treatment of “triple negative” breast cancer, a type of aggressive breast cancer that often affects young African women.

“My real reason for supporting Fashion Targets Breast Cancer is simple: No less than £4.50 from this T-shirt goes directly to Breakthrough Breast Cancer,” said Alan Carr, who represents the 300 men diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK every year. “So there really is no excuse is there? Once a year Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish throw open the doors of their exquisite Berkshire home to a sparkling array of celebrities for their annual White Tie and Tiara Ball, and last night was no different as a staggering number of stars filed into the singer’s house for this year’s much-looked-forward-to event.

More than 600 guests turned up to the beach-themed party, each paying around US$6,000 for the dinner, auction, and concert. This year’s performance came from Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson, and attendees included Bill Clinton, Elle Macpherson, Denzel Washington, Elizabeth Hurley, Michael Caine, Simon Cowell, Rod Stewart, Mischa Barton, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Gordon Ramsay, Tracey Emin, Roger Federer, Natalie Imbruglia, Kelly Osbourne, and Jemima Khan.

Sir Elton decorated his lavish garden with palm trees and sand for the party, which raised money for the Elton John AIDS Foundation. Last year’s event raised over $12 million for the cause, and the White Tie and Tiara Balls have made over $50 million since 1998.

Leona Lewis Promotes Sun Safety For Summer

Singer Leona Lewis has designed a special headscarf to raise funds for a major charity’s new education campaign.

The 23-year-old was made an Ambassador for the Teenage Cancer Trust’s Sunburn campaign – a program to encourage young people to use sunscreen when out in the sun – in May, and has designed an exclusive limited-edition headscarf decorated with butterflies to celebrate her involvement.

The scarves will be available exclusively from British chain “Superdrug”, and cost £2.99 ($6US). They officially go on sale on July 2, but can be pre-ordered from the Superdrug website from today.

Lewis was also recently named – along with Red Hot Chili Peppers singer, Anthony Kiedis – the “Sexiest Vegetarian of 2008” by PETA. The pair beat opposition from Pink, Natalie Imbruglia, Bryan Adams, and others for the honor. She is also due to play at Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday Concert in London this Friday.

Stars Gather For Cystic Fibrosis Benefit

A cold London night was made a little warmer on Thursday, when a host of stars came out to raise money for sufferers of a chronic genetic disease.

The “Liv” Gala and Auction was held on January 31, with 420 guests paying up to $2,500 to attend the black tie event. The evening, which included performances by British comedians David Walliams, Matt Lucas, and Jimmy Carr, rasied over $4 million, with proceeds to be split between the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in England and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in America.

Last minute schedule changes by soccer club Barcelona FC meant that host Thierry Henry was unable to attend, but he thrilled the audience by appearing via live video when his match finished. However, English International players Peter Crouch and John Terry did attend, and they were joined by singer Natalie Imbruglia, photographer Sam Taylor-Wood, and British television hosts Trinny Woodall and Davina McCall. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, whose youngest son suffers from cystic fibrosis, also attended the gala.

But the evening’s biggest applause was reserved for Sir Elton John, who received a standing ovation for his performance.

Cystic Fibrosis is one of the world’s most common life-threatening diseases that can be inherited from parents, with over 70,000 sufferers around the globe. It is a debilitating condition that affects internal organs, especially the lungs and digestive system, by clogging them with thick and sticky mucus. Sufferers experience difficulties in breathing and digesting food, and the average life expectancy is only 31 years. Money raised from the gala will be used to provide care for sufferers and provide life saving medicines.

Natalie Imbruglia to Perform at ROTA Benefit Dinner in Qatar

Natalie Imbruglia is set to perform at the second annual Reach Out to Asia (ROTA) benefit dinner being held on November 4, in Doha, Qatar’s capital city.

The Australian pop singer certainly won’t be the only celebrity attending as organizers for the event, which is being hosted at the city’s Ritz Carlton Hotel, are hoping for an even more glitzy and successful benefit than last year’s, when it drew in big names like Bill Clinton and Sir Richard Branson and was able to raise over $10 million for charitable causes in Asia.

ROTA’s philanthropic purpose is community development within Asia “with specific emphasis on promoting global responsibility for basic, quality primary education” as stated on the charity’s website.

ROTA has in the past rebuilt schools in a part of Kashmir devastated by the 2005 earthquake that hit Pakistan, and has sponsored a library and rebuilt schools in a part of Indonesia hit by the 2004 tsunami and a more recent earthquake.

CNN International news anchor Richard Quest is slated to act as emcee for the evening’s festivities.
