Mick Jagger Named As Rainforest Ambassador

Mick Jagger, who has been a keen economic activist for some time, has been made an honorary Ambassador of the Rainforest. Peruvian officials named the rock star ambassador as he travels through South America with his family, visiting national treasures such as the Inca site Machu Picchu.

Experts now suggest that the last of the rainforest, which has been disappearing rapidly, will be gone within 40 years because of logging and industry. Almost half of the world’s species of animals and plants are predicted to be extinct by the end of this period and even more scarily, in Brazil alone, more than 90 indigenous tribes have been killed off since the 1990s.

More encouragingly, if the destruction of the rainforest was halted now, by harvesting its many nuts, fruits, oil-producing plants, and medicinal plants, the rainforest would have more economic value than if they were cut down to make grazing land for cattle or for timber.

Bianca Jagger Joins Fight For ActionAid

Environmental campaigner and former wife of Mick Jagger, Bianca Jagger and musician Nitin Sawhney stood alongside tribal activist Sitaram Kulisika of India’s Khondh people at British mining company Vedanta’s AGM late last month to protest against a proposal to open a massive bauxite mine on their spiritual homeland.

The bauxite will be processed into aluminium for use in items such as drinks cans and foil for chocolate bars.

ActionAid has bought a single share for Sitaram so that he can attend the AGM, make his voice heard and speak on behalf of his people.

Mick Jagger is throwing his weight behind a campaign to save a historic cinema where the Rolling Stones played in the 1960s.

The EMD cinema in Walthamstow, north-east London, is listed as a Grade II historic building. The building was frequented by Alfred Hitchcock and hosted shows by bands such as the Beatles, The Kinks and The Who.

Sold in 2003, planning permission to keep the theatre open has been denied.

Sir Mick Jagger’s ex-wife Bianca joined controversial rocker Jon McClure for a campaign to encourage kids to get political. The two discussed greed in this aptly titled speed-debate dubbed ‘The Need For Greed,’ which took place May 26 at London’s famous Boogaloo Pub.

The debate is part of the Instigate Debate Project designed to help young people to engage with political issues and is supported by the likes of Carl Barat and Babyshambles’ Drew McConnell.

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger is set to record a song with soul singer Joss Stone for charity.

The pair first recorded together in 2004 on a track called Lonely Without You, for Jude Law’s movie remake Alfie. They are now set to contribute another song to an album being released to coincide with the United Nations’ International Day of Peace on 21 September.

“Joss and Mick hit it off when they worked with producer Dave Stewart on the Alfie soundtrack,” a source told Britain’s The Sun newspaper. “So they were hoping to collaborate again. When this project was suggested they were keen to get on board, especially considering the glittering cast of other musicians involved.”

Sir Paul McCartney will appear in an advertising campaign in Britain this month to encourage people to support the Paralympic Games in Beijing.

The campaign, organized by ParalympicsGB, will ask people to donate cash to help disabled athletes who want to compete in the games, and McCartney hopes his input will help the future of disability sport.

“I met leading Paralympic dressage rider Sophie Christiansen and was completely blown away by her skill, dedication and the fact that she had won a gold medal for Britain, so I felt I had to do something,” said the 66-year-old ex-Beatle. “My suggestion was simple. Why not create an ad that would highlight the work of ParalympicsGB and call on the British public to donate much needed money.”

Fashion icon Jerry Hall auctioned off some of her most valuable dresses last week and raised $54,600 for Emmaus, a community in which former homeless people live and work.

As reported earlier, the auction included the knee-length Anthony Price white lace wedding dress she wore for her wedding to Mick Jagger in 1990 in Bali, and was held at Sotheby’s in London.

The dress was expected to raise $1000 but was bought by Rellik, a London-based vintage boutique, for $4717.

Model Jerry Hall has vowed to sell her lace Antony Price wedding dress, worn for her 1990 marriage to Mick Jagger in Bali, in a new charity auction.

The dress will join a range of the star’s designer clothes on sale – 429 items to be exact – including a white silk wedding kimono given to her by the Rolling Stone, a beige satin evening outfit worn to dinner with President Clinton at the White House, an 18th century-style ivory gown worn to the Queen Mother’s 80th birthday party, and a black taffeta dress worn on a night out with Jagger, as well as couture by Vivienne Westwood, Dior, Balmain, Thierry Mugler, and Balenciaga. Most lots will be sold for less than $1,000 to give everyone a chance to take part, and the money will go to Emmaus, a British charity for the homeless.

“Jerry wants this auction to be accessible to everyone,” said fashion specialist Kerry Taylor. “She wants to raise as much money as possible for charity, but she also wants the prices to be affordable for anyone.”

It was a delectable night of weird and wonderful gastronomic delights when a group of celebrities were served a meal made from ingredients totally grown, plucked, picked, fished, harvested, collected, reaped, and gathered from in and around London late last week.

Over 400 guests, including Annie Lennox, Mick Jagger, Colin Firth, Jemima Khan, Richard E. Grant, Jamie Cullum, Sophie Dahl, and Sting’s wife Trudie Styler, gathered in Guildhall for the “Feast Of Albion”, an event masterminded by TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

Money raised from the $2000-a-head evening, which included a performance from Lennox, went to the Soil Association, the UK’s leading environmental charity promoting sustainable, organic farming, and championing human health.

Stars Turn Out For LA Free Clinic Anniversary

Mick Jagger, Claire Danes, Zach Braff, Martin Scorsese, Bob Saget and Don Rickles took the stage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Monday night to honor Paramount Pictures CEO Brad Grey at a gala dinner celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Free Clinic.

Marc Anthony performed a lively three-song set backed by his powerhouse salsa band. Also in attendance were Anthony’s superstar spouse, Jennifer Lopez, actor Mark Wahlberg and former California Governor Gray Davis.

The event raised $4 million for the Clinic, which provides free health care services throughout Los Angeles County.
