Bianca Jagger Joins Fight For ActionAid

Environmental campaigner and former wife of Mick Jagger, Bianca Jagger and musician Nitin Sawhney stood alongside tribal activist Sitaram Kulisika of India’s Khondh people at British mining company Vedanta’s AGM late last month to protest against a proposal to open a massive bauxite mine on their spiritual homeland.

The bauxite will be processed into aluminium for use in items such as drinks cans and foil for chocolate bars.

ActionAid has bought a single share for Sitaram so that he can attend the AGM, make his voice heard and speak on behalf of his people.

The Kondh’s future and a pristine eco-system are threatened with extinction by Vedanta’s plans for the open-pit mine. It will destroy a large part of Niyamgiri Mountain in the eastern Indian state of Orissa, the Kondh’s ancestral homeland.

The 8,000-strong Kondh tribe is totally dependent on the mountain for their crops, water and livelihoods. They are strongly opposed to the mine – scheduled to open in September – fearing it will destroy their way of life forever.

The Kondh regard Niyamgiri Mountain and its surrounding forest as sacred and home to their god, Niyam Raja.

Sitaram said: "It is not too late to stop the extinction of my people’s way of life.

“Last year Vedanta directors promised not to mine without our consent. I am here to request all shareholders to honour that promise and save our livelihood and our god.

“We have been living in harmony with this mountain, these forests, these animals for generations. Vedanta has been here for less than 10 years. They cannot tell us what is best for our future.”

ActionAid, which is asking shareholders to oppose the mining, pointed out that the destruction of an equivalent iconic cultural site such as Stonehenge would not be tolerated in the UK.

Meredith Alexander, ActionAid’s head of Trade and Corporates said: "The destruction of the Kondh’s homeland is imminent. Today, shareholders have a final chance to refuse to allow their money to be used in this way.

“Shareholders include the Church of England and numerous county councils. They are investing in a mine that will destroy a community’s way of life.”

ActionAid has produced a mock up of the demolition of Stonehenge to help the British public understand what is at stake.

Meredith Alexander concluded: “Just as the public would be horrified to see Stonehenge demolished to make way for mining, ActionAid believes they should be even more troubled by Vedanta’s plans to flatten the heart of the Kondh’s culture, the land they also rely on for their future.”

Mick Jagger Supports Campaign To Save Historic Cinema

Mick Jagger is throwing his weight behind a campaign to save a historic cinema where the Rolling Stones played in the 1960s.

The EMD cinema in Walthamstow, north-east London, is listed as a Grade II historic building. The building was frequented by Alfred Hitchcock and hosted shows by bands such as the Beatles, The Kinks and The Who.

Sold in 2003, planning permission to keep the theatre open has been denied.

“Cinemas and live venues like the Granada in Walthamstow where the Stones played in the early days, learning our craft on the way, are the lifeblood of our cultural history,” said Jagger. "They helped launched British popular music on to a world stage and should continue to function as places of entertainment and enjoyment.

“It’s heartbreaking to hear about such a beautiful, important historical building and centre of entertainment being lost to the local community.

“I fully support the campaign to keep it open and provide film, music and the arts for generations to come.”

Joining Sir Mick in supporting the campaign is Tony Robinson.

Film A Star And Win A Private Concert

Sir Mick Jagger’s ex-wife Bianca joined controversial rocker Jon McClure for a campaign to encourage kids to get political. The two discussed greed in this aptly titled speed-debate dubbed ‘The Need For Greed,’ which took place May 26 at London’s famous Boogaloo Pub.

The debate is part of the Instigate Debate Project designed to help young people to engage with political issues and is supported by the likes of Carl Barat and Babyshambles’ Drew McConnell.

If you didn’t watch the debate, you can still get involved via the Instigate Debate website and might even get a private gig out of it. Instigate Debate is a new idea and an interesting experiment. They offer an avenue for exchange between the public and public figures, without the hindrance of media spin.

It’s simple – whoever you are, wherever you are – if you spot a public figure, ask them a question, film the response (on your cellular phone) and send it to them.

Bette Midler And 50 Cent Together For Charity

The devine Bette Midler is joining with 50 Cent and Dolly Parton to host her annual Spring Picnic to benefit the New York Restoration Project.

The event will take place at Fort Tryon Park, New York City, on May 19, and will include a BBQ and entertainment.

Midler founded the New York Restoration Project in 1995 to improve the natural balance of life in the city. The organization is based on the belief that clean, green neighborhoods are fundamental to the quality of life, and that every community in New York City deserves an oasis of natural beauty. Seeing many parks and open spaces in dire need of clean-up and restoration, Midler created NYRP to be the “conservancy of forgotten places,” particularly in New York City’s underserved communities.

To raise awareness of the event, Midler has launched an online auction to benefit the NYRP. Joss Stone Gets Rolling For Peace Day

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger is set to record a song with soul singer Joss Stone for charity.

The pair first recorded together in 2004 on a track called Lonely Without You, for Jude Law’s movie remake Alfie. They are now set to contribute another song to an album being released to coincide with the United Nations’ International Day of Peace on 21 September.

“Joss and Mick hit it off when they worked with producer Dave Stewart on the Alfie soundtrack,” a source told Britain’s The Sun newspaper. “So they were hoping to collaborate again. When this project was suggested they were keen to get on board, especially considering the glittering cast of other musicians involved.”

Bono, Nas and others are also expected to take part.

The United Nations’ International Day of Peace – marked every year on September 21 – is a global holiday when individuals, communities, nations and governments highlight efforts to end conflict and promote peace. Established by U.N. resolution in 1982, “Peace Day” has grown to include millions of people around the world who participate in all kinds of events, large and small. Sir Paul McCartney Busy With Charity Campaigns

Sir Paul McCartney will appear in an advertising campaign in Britain this month to encourage people to support the Paralympic Games in Beijing.

The campaign, organized by ParalympicsGB, will ask people to donate cash to help disabled athletes who want to compete in the games, and McCartney hopes his input will help the future of disability sport.

“I met leading Paralympic dressage rider Sophie Christiansen and was completely blown away by her skill, dedication and the fact that she had won a gold medal for Britain, so I felt I had to do something,” said the 66-year-old ex-Beatle. “My suggestion was simple. Why not create an ad that would highlight the work of ParalympicsGB and call on the British public to donate much needed money.”

McCartney has also been on the campaign trail for Canadian Harp seals in the last few days. He appeared in a special video shown during an anti-seal hunting video played at a rally in Brussels on Tuesday, urging demonstrators fight for a European seal products import ban.

“Stopping the import of seal fur into the European Union could really put an end to this brutality once and for all,” he said. “Please ask the EU to ban this terrible trade today.”

It is not the first time the singer has campaigned for an end to the slaughter of thousands of Harp seals that takes place in Canada every year. He visited the country with ex-wife Heather Mills in 2006 to ask Prime Minister Stephen Harper to end the “heartbreaking” hunt that has left a “stain” on the Canadian character.

Other celebrities to support the end to the slaughter include Slash, Martin Sheen, Mick Jagger, and Brigitte Bardot.

Jerry Hall's Wedding Dress Exceeds Expectations

Fashion icon Jerry Hall auctioned off some of her most valuable dresses last week and raised $54,600 for Emmaus, a community in which former homeless people live and work.

As reported earlier, the auction included the knee-length Anthony Price white lace wedding dress she wore for her wedding to Mick Jagger in 1990 in Bali, and was held at Sotheby’s in London.

The dress was expected to raise $1000 but was bought by Rellik, a London-based vintage boutique, for $4717.

“I am so pleased that my old things have been recycled into £28,000 for Emmaus,” said the 51-year-old.

A Vivienne Westwood diamante studded jacket estimated at $1000 sold for $3000, and an Antony Price black velvet ball gown sold for $2000.

Jerry Hall Sells Wedding Dress In Charity Auction

Model Jerry Hall has vowed to sell her lace Antony Price wedding dress, worn for her 1990 marriage to Mick Jagger in Bali, in a new charity auction.

The dress will join a range of the star’s designer clothes on sale – 429 items to be exact – including a white silk wedding kimono given to her by the Rolling Stone, a beige satin evening outfit worn to dinner with President Clinton at the White House, an 18th century-style ivory gown worn to the Queen Mother’s 80th birthday party, and a black taffeta dress worn on a night out with Jagger, as well as couture by Vivienne Westwood, Dior, Balmain, Thierry Mugler, and Balenciaga. Most lots will be sold for less than $1,000 to give everyone a chance to take part, and the money will go to Emmaus, a British charity for the homeless.

“Jerry wants this auction to be accessible to everyone,” said fashion specialist Kerry Taylor. “She wants to raise as much money as possible for charity, but she also wants the prices to be affordable for anyone.”

The auction starts June 10 in London at Sotheby’s Olympia, after a two day preview.

“I have led a very glamorous life in many ways,” said Hall. “But I know all too well how quickly lives can become derailed.”

A Recipe For Organic Living - Stars Feast For A Cause

It was a delectable night of weird and wonderful gastronomic delights when a group of celebrities were served a meal made from ingredients totally grown, plucked, picked, fished, harvested, collected, reaped, and gathered from in and around London late last week.

Over 400 guests, including Annie Lennox, Mick Jagger, Colin Firth, Jemima Khan, Richard E. Grant, Jamie Cullum, Sophie Dahl, and Sting’s wife Trudie Styler, gathered in Guildhall for the “Feast Of Albion”, an event masterminded by TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

Money raised from the $2000-a-head evening, which included a performance from Lennox, went to the Soil Association, the UK’s leading environmental charity promoting sustainable, organic farming, and championing human health.

Guests were served a selection of unique dishes, including nettles picked from Hyde Park, wild fennel from the banks of Regent’s Canal in Hackney, organic beetroot from Romney Marsh, oysters from the Blackwater river in Essex, and venison from the Windsor Estate, with many of the ingredients being transported by bicycle up to 50 miles to the venue to reduce the event’s carbon footprint. The aim was to encourage supermarkets to stop flying out-of-season produce across the world and to promote locally grown foods.

“Organic farming enables poor farmers in developing countries to get into growing food for their families and communities in a way that’s genuinely sustainable,” said Lennox. “Eat organic, save the planet – it’s that simple.”

A live auction – which included items such as an environmentally friendly holiday at a Himalayan retreat – raised more than $600,000 for the Soil Association.

Mick Jagger, Claire Danes, Zach Braff, Martin Scorsese, Bob Saget and Don Rickles took the stage at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Monday night to honor Paramount Pictures CEO Brad Grey at a gala dinner celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the Los Angeles Free Clinic.

Marc Anthony performed a lively three-song set backed by his powerhouse salsa band. Also in attendance were Anthony’s superstar spouse, Jennifer Lopez, actor Mark Wahlberg and former California Governor Gray Davis.

The event raised $4 million for the Clinic, which provides free health care services throughout Los Angeles County.
