Charlize Theron will take part in a special lecture behind the scenes of a photography exhibition in LA tonight to benefit the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project (CTAOP).

This special Tuesday evening lecture is a personal, in-depth and behind the scenes tour of the images in photographer Randall Slavin’s project “REACH: 24 portraits by Randall Slavin to benefit the CTAOP.” REACH is a collection of previously unseen portraits of some of the most influential names of our time including Clint Eastwood, Eddie Vedder, Kobe Bryant and Bill Clinton. Theron will introduce Slavin and re-join the discussion during the Q&A portion of the presentation.

Theron serves as a United Nations Messenger of Peace and launched the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) in 2007 with the aid of the Entertainment Industry Foundation.

Most likely to be the only celebrity to win an award with the word ‘ass’ in it — the 2010 Do Something Kick-Ass For Survival Award — Christina Applegate is continuing to “kick cancer’s ass” by launching a charity, Right Action for Women, to help women who can’t afford the proper treatment for cancer.

“It’s a program giving financial aid to high-risk women who can’t afford to get MRIs, which is how I found my cancer,” Applegate tells WENN. “It’s unfortunate that insurance companies (in America) don’t cover the cost of that. It’s such an incredible device because you can find it at an early detection stage. We started our pilot program and started helping women already, even though we aren’t launched. The other aspect of the program is to do genetic counseling and help women understand what being high-risk means, and understanding what foods are good for their bloods and how to prevent this disease from happening. That has been my mission.” Applegate said.

Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, Applegate was fortunate that she survived, mainly because the early form of cancer was detected before it grew serious. Right Action for Women provides financial aid to women for MRI tests, which are screening tests for women with risks of getting breast cancer. MRI tests are usually not covered by insurance and can be seen as a financial nuisance to some. Applegate’s charity hopes to bring light to the importance of MRI tests and to preach the seriousness of these potentially life-saving tests.

The stars gathered at Soho House to raise funds for the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project, an initiative created by the actress to create a safer, healthier and better life for impoverished children and their families in South Africa.

“We started [the project] with so little and thought, ‘What is this really going to change?’ And 18 months later I went back and there were about eight faces that I knew we affected and changed their lives,” said Charlize. “For me, going there when we launched, it was eye-opening that the things we take for granted are not the things that you can expect in rural communities in South Africa. Nelson Mandela came out of this area. How can you not invest? I always say even if you can only send two dollars and you don’t think that’s gonna make a difference, trust me, it does make a difference.”

Charlize Theron has blogged in the Huffington Post about the possibility of change in South Africa.

“The first time I ever visited the Umkhanyakude district in South Africa was to celebrate the launch of the initial Mpilonhle mobile health unit, which my charity — the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project — helped to fund,” wrote the UN Messenger of Peace. "Mpilonhle is an organization that provides innovative health and education programs to this rural district’s schools and communities. Run by Dr. Michael Bennish, Mpilonhle uses mobile health units to treat individuals’ medical, psychological, and sociological needs. This care would not otherwise be available in these areas due to the extreme level of poverty.

“The Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project develops awareness, generates supporting funds, and participates in the enhancement of Mpilonhle’s medical units and mobile computer labs. The beauty of the units is that they bring resources to communities that have no means of transportation and are miles away from health services. Mpilonhle’s computer labs provide basic computer literacy to students and community members. Through the work CTAOP and Mpilonhle are doing together, many local individuals, especially children, are seeing doctors and experiencing technology for the very first time.”

Artists for Peace and Justice (APJ) has announced that it will merge with Ben Stiller’s Haitian school initiative (HSI).

The two organizations, both of whom were committed to improving living conditions in impoverished Haiti prior to the devastating earthquake, will combine their shared passion in helping build essential schools for the children of Haiti. The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has announced that Golden Globe Award-winning actress and producer Drew Barrymore will receive the Vanguard Award, and Emmy Award-winning actress and comedian Wanda Sykes will receive the Stephen F. Kolzak Award at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards on April 17 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.

The GLAAD Media Awards elevate and promote fair, accurate and inclusive stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues, people and allies that have increased awareness, understanding and respect for the lives of LGBT people. Actress Drew Barrymore will receive the Vanguard Award which is presented to media professionals who have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community. Penelope Cruz Pledges Cash To Schools In Haiti

Penelope Cruz has pledged $50,000 a year to Haitian schools until 2015 – a promise that has been matched by her partner Javier Bardem.

The pair joined a host of celebrities – including Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Sheryl Crow, Gerard Butler and many more – at a charity brunch hosted by director Paul Haggis to raise money for Artists for Peace and Justice earlier this week.

Charlize Theron and Blake Mycoskie, founder of the accessory line Toms Shoes, have co-designed a limited edition men’s and women’s collection to celebrate the donation of over 10,000 pairs of shoes to children in Theron’s native country of South Africa.

These shoes are inspired by the South African baobab tree and have been made from vegan materials. The tree pattern is embroidered over dyed canvas and is available in blue and orange. The shoes are also lined with the Charlize Theron African Outreach Project’s logo.
