Leeza Gibbons Supports National Family Caregiver Month

Leeza Gibbons – who founded Leeza’s Place in response to the growing needs of both those who suffer from memory disorders and their caregivers – is celebrating National Family Caregiver Month.

“At Leeza’s Place, we know the job of being a caregiver is both frustrating and fantastic; isolating and invigorating; a blessing and a burden,” she says. "Those husbands and wives, daughters, sons and friends who care for someone they love often find they are stronger than they ever imagined they could be.

“More than 65 million people, 29% of the U.S. population, provide care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend during any given year and spend an average of 20 hours per week providing care for their loved one. Each and every month we celebrate those courageous spirits who give of themselves day in and day out to provide care for their loved ones.

Leeza Gibbons To Climb Mount Washington For Charity

On July 31, Leeza Gibbons will lead a group of volunteers to the top of Mount Washington to fight against Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Disease.

The celebrity legend says: "This year, all of us here at Leeza’s Place and the Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation are involved in a very special project called The Army of Change. This project started with “the Regulars”, a group of regular people who have been impacted by Alzheimer’s and/or Parkinson’s disease. This group of regular people decided to climb 10 Mountains in 10 Years to bring awareness and raise funds for these two diseases.

“On July 31, 2010, the group, along with hundreds of regular people, will be climbing Mt. Washington in New Hampshire to raise money for four charities, including the Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation & our signature program, Leeza’s Place. You can help support our Leeza’s Place locations and our communities of caregivers who will be making this climb in recognition and honor of all caregivers and their loved ones who climb their own personal mountain daily.”

Maria Shriver Announces Women's Conference Lineup

Maria Shriver has announced the lineup for this year’s Women’s Conference, to be held from Sunday, October 24 through Tuesday, October 26 at the Long Beach Convention Center.

“Our theme this year is ’It’s Time’ – and we are hoping The Women’s Conference inspires women to see this challenging moment in history as an opportunity to come together and transform ourselves, our communities and our world as Architects of Change,” she wrote in the Huffington Post. "I could not be more proud to disclose this amazing lineup, which will be led by Laila Ali, Yahoo! CEO Carol Bartz, Martha Beck, Mary J. Blige, Erin Brockovich, Campbell Brown, Deepak Chopra, Rosario Dawson, Paula Deen, Giada De Laurentiis, Linda Ellerbee, Giselle Fernandez, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, David Gregory, Arianna Huffington, Women for Hire CEO Tory Johnson, Donna Karan, Billie Jean King, New York Times Columnist Nicholas Kristof, Matt Lauer, Omega Institute Co-Founder Elizabeth Lesser, Journalists Laura Ling and Lisa Ling, Jillian Michaels, former Xerox Chairwoman & CEO and Save the Children Board Chair Anne Mulcahy, The Honorable Sandra Day O’Connor, Poet Mary Oliver, Suze Orman, Dr. Oz, Tony Robbins, Al Roker, Diane Sawyer, The Episcopal Church’s Presiding Bishop and Primate The Most Rev. Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori, Howard Schultz, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Katherine Schwarzenegger, Jessica Simpson, Anna Deavere Smith, Disney/ABC Television Group President Anne Sweeney, “The Cake Boss” Buddy Valastro, Kerry Washington, Ali Wentworth and Oprah Winfrey.

“We’ll kick the Conference off on October 24 with Maria Shriver’s March on Alzheimer’s and candlelight vigil in Long Beach, which I will emcee with Leeza Gibbons, Peter Gallagher and Dixie Chicks lead singer Natalie Maines. Alzheimer’s is a mind-blowing disease that disproportionately impacts women – both as victims and caretakers of loved one’s suffering from it. With more than 5 million people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in this country and a new diagnosis every 70 seconds, I believe it’s time to pick up the pace and start marching to defeat this devastating disease.

Coldplay Appeals For Chilean Earthquake Relief

British band Coldplay used Twitter last week to encourage fans to support the Red Cross in its earthquake relief work in Chile – and fans responded in such numbers that they crashed the charity’s website!

“Two million people have been affected by the earthquake in Chile – donate towards the Red Cross’s relief work,” wrote singer Chris Martin. The message was followed less than an hour later with: “Amazingly, you folks just crashed the Red Cross’s Chile Appeal donation website – it’s back up now.”

Coldplay is joined in their plea by Leeza Gibbons, who used Facebook to urge fans to give to the relief fund: "Donate $10 to survivors of the Chile earthquake thru @RedCross, text “Chile” to 90999, I’m on the celebrity cabinet, please help if you can!"
