Henry Winkler Visits School For Red Nose Day

Happy Days actor and author Henry Winkler brought loads of laughter to Henleaze Junior School in Bristol on Friday as part of the First News Crazy Hair Dare, in support of Red Nose Day.

He and Nicky Cox, the editor of First News – the UK’s only newspaper for young people – made a special visit to Henleaze Junior School to thank them for their fund-raising efforts for Comic Relief. First News has been encouraging schools and children all across the country to do crazy things with their hair in support of Red Nose Day.

As well as sporting gravity-defying hair dos, the school is raising money with a special topsy-turvey day, with children attending school in their pyjamas, breakfast served at lunchtime and teachers sitting at desks to learn. Winkler began the day by reading bedtime stories at the school assembly.

Henry Winkler Celebrates Caregivers For National Stroke Association

Henry Winkler, actor, director, author and philanthropist, is partnering with National Stroke Association to celebrate caregivers during National Family Caregivers Month this November.

Henry’s mother suffered a stroke in 1987 and lived with the results for more than 10 years. Her challenges after her stroke included walking, upper limb spasticity and limited use of her left side. Even though she received extensive therapy, her recovery was minimal and very difficult. Henry watched as she struggled and lost her joy. To date, he feels his most challenging role was being a caregiver to his mother after her stroke. Henry has joined National Stroke Association’s Faces of Stroke campaign to remind other caregivers about the importance of their role on the healthcare team.

Henry Winkler Honored With OBE For Dyslexia Work In UK

Henry Winkler has received an honorary OBE (Order of the British Empire) for his work with dyslexia in the UK.

Winkler, who was diagnosed with dyslexia as an adult, has spent much of the last two years touring the UK, educating school children, educators, and policy makers alike about dyslexia and other learning difficulties. He has also authored 17 books for children about Hank Zipzer, a young man with dyslexia. Zipzer’s adventures are based on Mr Winkler’s own childhood struggles with school and the resulting bullying.

On October 8, 2009, adults across the globe read Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar to 2,019,752 children to raise awareness of literacy, with stars such as Justin Bieber, Nelly Furtado, Meredith Vieira, Mary-Louise Parker, Tiki Barber, Vince Vaughn, Lo Bosworth and Henry Winkler lending a hand. Hollywood Legend Ernest Borgnine's Pre-Oscar Party

Jumpstart's Read for the Record 2009 campaign officially set a new record for the world’s largest shared reading experience. On Oct. 8th, adults across the globe read Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar to 2,019,752 children! This year’s campaign shattered the previous record of 688,000, set by Jumpstart’s Read for the Record 2008.

Presented in partnership with sponsor and founding partner Pearson, Jumpstart’s Read for the Record is a celebration of reading and community service created to raise awareness about how important reading with young children is to developing crucial early language and literacy skills for success in school and in life. This year’s campaign donated more than 275,000 books and raised more than $1.4 million to support Jumpstart’s year-long work with preschool children. Ted Danson To Lead Young Storytellers Festival

Ted Danson, Henry Winkler, Zachary Levi, Anthony LaPaglia and a host of other stars will host a special outdoor festival to encourage literacy in September.

Storypalooza is a festival featuring children’s storytelling games, musical guests, and a live performance of scripts by an all-star cast. The festival is being organized by the Young Storytellers Foundation, a Los Angeles based non-profit organization dedicated to developing literacy, self-expression and self-esteem in elementary school students through the art of storytelling. The Foundation offers a uniquely engaging and effective arts education and youth development program to targeted elementary schools in Los Angeles where students are at-risk and have little or no access to the arts. Twice a year at more than 30 schools, the program pairs 10 students from 4th or 5th grade with 10 mentors. The mentors volunteer one lunch hour a week for seven weeks to guide and encourage the students as they imagine and develop their own short screenplay. In the eighth week, professional Hollywood actors perform the students’ scripts for a live audience.

Storypalooza – which also features appearances by Ben McKenzie, Tate Donovan, Josh Radnor, Mary Steenburgen and many more – will take place on September 26 at Crossroads Elementary School in Santa Monica. More info can be found here.

Actor Henry Winkler has won £40,000 (US$56,000) for an education charity in a radio competition.

The former Happy Days star was chosen in a public vote for the “Who’s Calling Christian?” competition on Absolute Radio in the UK, in which people had to get stars to call the station in order to win £20,000 for themselves, and £40,000 for the charity of the celebrity’s choice.

“I’m just so grateful to everyone who voted for me… and you can all start your weekend knowing you’ve done a very good thing,” said Winkler on Friday. “The Teaching Awards really deserve it. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to win this for teachers.”

One of the most exciting celebrity auctions of the year will take place in May to raise funds for an organization supporting sufferers of a painful and disfiguring condition.

National Doodle Day will kick off on May 8 as part of Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month, and will mark the start of a week-long auction of over 100 celebrity doodles from stars such as Ellen DeGeneres, Scarlett Johansson, and Goldie Hawn. Money from the doodles, which were hand-drawn by each celebrity on a 5" by 8" card, will benefit Neurofibromatosis, Inc., a national organization that supports NF patients, their families, and research into the disorder.
