Stars Line Up For Annual BBC Children In Need Charity Appeal

Sir Terry Wogan, Fearne Cotton, Tess Daly and Alesha Dixon have been announced as presenters for one of the biggest nights in the TV calendar, the BBC Children in Need’s annual Appeal, live from Television Centre on Friday 18 November.

With even more associated programing than ever before, this will see the high point of the 2011 campaign. TV’s biggest names will give their all with a massive array of sketches, musical acts, live guests and plenty of glamour.

One Direction open the proceedings as the traditional BBC Children in Need Appeal telethon starts at 7:30pm. Girls Aloud’s Nicola Roberts is fronting a charity Clothes Throw to raise money for Alder Hey Imagine Appeal.

The Girls Aloud star turned solo artist revealed how pleased she is to support Alder Hey when she visited patients on their cancer unit: “I am really excited to be fronting the Clothes Throw 2011 campaign! I’m an avid supporter of Alder Hey Imagine Appeal. I visit Alder Hey and the patients there really touch my heart.”

The Clothes Throw is in its third year but has been able to expand greatly with the help of Liverpool ONE. Alongside Nicola a host of celebrities and retailers have donated clothes and accessories to raise money for the children’s hospital.

Artists for Peace and Justice (APJ) has announced that it will merge with Ben Stiller’s Haitian school initiative (HSI).

The two organizations, both of whom were committed to improving living conditions in impoverished Haiti prior to the devastating earthquake, will combine their shared passion in helping build essential schools for the children of Haiti. Together they have engaged Global Philanthropy Group (GPG) to help develop and manage their philanthropic efforts. In partnership with an interim Country Director in Port-au-Prince, GPG will coordinate the day-to-day efforts of APJ.

Country singer Keith Urban spoke on the radio recently about a project he and his wife, actress Nicole Kidman, are involved in – building schools in Haiti.

“We’re going to be funding a school down there for the next five years,” he told CatCountry 96. “The kids will also have one hot meal a day. They’ll have all of their medical taken care of by the school, and clothing as well.”

The stars are lending their financial support and influential voices to help rebuild Haiti by funding street schools for the children living in the slums and in the burgeoning camps around the city of Port-au-Prince. Getting children back to school – often the only place they receive clean drinking water, their only food for the day, medical attention, clothing and hope – has become a top priority. APJ remains committed to long term sustainability in the ravaged country.

Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman Raise $1.5 Million for AIDS

At the New York Palace Theatre’s closing ceremony of the 21st annual Gypsy of the Year Competition, a six-week fundraising event that finished earlier this month, Bernadette Peters announced that a record-breaking $4.6 million had been raised.

The money was raised by 60 Broadway, Off-Broadway and National Tour companies – including original song and dance performances created by the casts of more than a dozen shows – to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA), a charity that provides grants to Actors Fund social services and American family services and AIDS organizations.

A second record was broken during the competition by A Steady Rain. This Broadway play, staring Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman, raised over $1.5 million for BC/EFA alone, more than double the record last set in 2003 by The Boy from Oz in which Jackman had also performed.

The pair – currently performing on Broadway in A Steady Rain – agreed to sell their vests to the highest bidder to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, an industry-based organization that relies on the talents and generosity of the American Theatre community to raise money for AIDS-related causes in the United States. The sale of the vests scooped $3,500 for the charity.

The two stars also sold backstage passes and photo opportunities for $2,000, signed posters for $300, and signed programs for $60.

Elton John Warns Complacent Teens About Unsafe Sex

At a gala for his AIDS charity on November 16, Elton John said that young people are putting themselves in danger of getting HIV by engaging in unsafe sex. He warned that the latest generation is “complacent” about the risk of getting the virus.

He said that even though AIDS is not a new disease, higher rates of HIV infection are being seen in African American women, the rural south and in the gay community.

Speaking to Radio 1’s Newsbeat, the singer said, “We are finding that too many young people are not listening to what we are saying. I’m afraid people do get a little complacent about the disease by going out and having unsafe sex. It’s a cyclical thing. Every ten years a new generation comes along and you have to re-educate them.”
