“Please support Every Mother Counts as we work to build a clinic for mothers in need in Indonesia this holiday season!” Christy writes on her Crowdrise page. “Thanks to Mozilla Firefox and CrowdRise, we’re entering a competition and if our charity raises the most, Mozilla Firefox will contribute $25,000!”

Mozilla Firefox has donated $5,000 to a whole bunch of celebrity-endorsed charities, and the charity that raises the most by January 11 will be awarded $25,000.

Jon Stewart Visits US Troops In Afghanistan

The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart recently joined illusionist David Blaine and basketball Hall of Famer Karl Malone in Afghanistan to visit US troops with the USO.

“It was an incredible weekend … I can’t really put it into words,” said Stewart on The Daily Show last week. "People can disagree about strategies and (politics), foreign policy and things of that nature, but hopefully we can all agree that the men and women of our armed services are giving so much to our country.

“What a great opportunity that they allowed me to go with them. They’re great people at the USO and it was a wonderful opportunity.”

Admiral Mike Mullen will wrap up his four-year appointment as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff by leading a star-studded, eclectic group of celebrities on his final USO entertainment tour overseas this summer.

Admiral Mullen will be joined by “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart, Hall of Fame forward Karl Malone and illusionist David Blaine as they entertain deployed servicemen and women on a three-country, six-day tour. (Locations and dates of the tour stops remain unannounced for security reasons.)

Stars such as Michael Douglas, Sharon Stone, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, David Blaine and others were out and about to benefit the New York City Police Foundation last week.

The Foundation hosted its 32nd Annual Gala at the Waldorf-Astoria in NYC on March 16, to raise funds to “strengthen the services of the NYPD and improve public safety.” Hosted by Douglas and Stone and featuring a performance by Marc Anthony, the evening attracted over 800 guests.

The New York City Police Foundation was established in 1971 and has invested over $900 million in innovative programs that have helped drive NYC crime down to the lowest levels in four decades and build a counter terrorism model that is recognized worldwide.

Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy hosted a special event in Miami to raise money for charity during the weekend.

The celebrity couple hosted the Saturday Night Spectacular event to raise money for Jenny’s Generation Rescue autism charity. Attended by a number of celebrity guests, such as Shannon Elizabeth and magician David Blaine, the event featured a poker tournament, live entertainment and a performance by Cirque USA.

McCarthy is well known for her work supporting autism research, a cause she became involved with after her son was diagnosed with the condition. As well as supporting a number of organizations dedicated to children with autism, such as the TACA and the HEAL! Foundation, the model-turned-actress also wrote a book called Louder Than Words documenting her struggles to cope with a son who suffers from autism.

David Blaine: 3 Days Of Magic In Times Square For Haiti

Superstar Illusionist David Blaine is set to perform 3 days of magic non-stop in NYC’s Times Square to raise money for Haiti relief.

Blaine will perform tricks round-the-clock tricks near the Army recruiting station at 43rd St from 9am on Friday until Monday at noon. He is asking attendees to make a donation to the Red Cross earthquake relief fund.

“People can give me a penny or $100, whatever they want,” said Blaine.

NYC Marathon Attracts Celebrities For Charity

The NYC Marathon took place last Sunday, and what a race! The NYC Marathon is one of the most difficult marathon courses around. However, that didn’t stop a long list of celebrities, athletes and even royalty from training and putting on their running shoes to benefit a long list of charities.

If we talked about them all, this article would be encyclopedic. To remedy that, here is the link to the NYC Marathon’s Famous Faces 2009 webpage which notes them all.

However, let’s talk about 10 of them. That’s a nice round number that captures both the breadth and diversity of charities represented in last week’s race.

Alanis Morissette Joins Edward Norton's Maasai Marathon Challenge

Last month, Look To The Stars brought you news about Edward Norton’s New York Marathon charity challenge to benefit the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust. We can now reveal that singer Alanis Morissette has signed on as part of the initiative.

Morissette will join Norton and magician David Blaine for the run on November 1, which will help the organization protect the East African grasslands which the Maasai tribe calls home and is under threat by rapid industrial development. The Trust also seeks to promote sustainable development.

“Just ran a marathon last weekend on behalf of national eating disorder association, unbelievably harrowing and beautiful and moving and surreal experience,” wrote Morissette on her pledge site. "I was blown away on many levels, not the least of which being that at around mile 20, even though it was clear I could NOT keep going, I did. I have to bow down to the human capacity to persevere…and for me, ALWAYS easier to do that with a Star of Bethlehem to keep my eye on and I soldier on. This cause fueling this run is beautiful. And I love Edward and Shauna. Halfway through the marathon last weekend I thought “Oh, I’ll have to tell Shauna and Edward that I can’t do it. It won’t be a big deal. They’ll forgive me.” Then, mere seconds after I crossed the finish line, someone came up to me and said “Will you do it again?”… and I found these words coming out of my mouth: “Yes, November first.” I am committed. For the Maasai Conservation Wilderness Trust. For Edward. For Shauna. For myself. And for the collective idea of tenacity, perseverance and loving/prevailing in the face of fear and pain. Yay, can’t wait. Jumping in last minute, please contribute whatever you feel called to… super grateful.

David Blaine Makes The Cold Disappear For Homeless

Illusionist David Blaine literally gave the shirt off his back for charity this Christmas.

The 35-year-old joined the New York Cares coat drive earlier this week by standing out in the freezing New York climate without a jacket. Clad in only a t-shirt, the magician encouraged people to donate to the charity and autographed his custom playing cards for those who helped.

“If you really want to understand why the Coat Drive is important, try standing outside for an hour without a coat,” he told the New York Times.

Ozzy Headlines Prince Charles Charity Gig

An all-star music concert was held in London yesterday to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Prince’s Trust charity.

Leading the line-up was veteran rocker Ozzy Osbourne, and other music acts included the Bee Gees, Lionel Richie, Annie Lennox, Ronan Keating, Pink and Embrace. Illusionist David Blaine also appeared.

Thanks to the Prince’s position, the 2000-strong audience was able to enjoy the concert in a unique setting: the grounds of the Tower of London.
