Kate Winslet will be releasing a special book to benefit her autism charity, the Golden Hat Foundation, in April 2012, and has called on some of her famous friends to help.

The book features a collection of stunning self-portraits from celebrities and cultural luminaries, all wearing a “magical” hat to support autism awareness and outreach.

Winslet has amassed a collection of photos from an amazing array of her friends and renowned personalities who have donned this special hat, taken a self portrait, and passed the hat along from one person to another. Winslet met Ericsdottir when she narrated a documentary film, A Mother’s Courage: Talking Back To Autism, about the family"s mission to find a way to connect with Keli. Eventually specialists “unlocked” Keli by teaching him ways to communicate. Despite hardship, Keli now composes beautiful and deeply moving poetry. One of the poems, among the many included in the book, is called “The Golden Hat,” which describes a magical hat that enables an autistic boy to communicate.

The Human Rights Campaign – the nation’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization – this week released the seventh video of the “New Yorkers for Marriage Equality” campaign, which features actors Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, the first married couple of the series.

The campaign raises the public profile of marriage equality in the Empire State following the win of three marriage equality supportive state senators last week.

Kevin Bacon joined around 100 people in hiking to the top of Pikes Peak in Colorado on Saturday, June 27, to raise money for the Love Hope Strength Foundation cancer charity.

The hikers each paid a $50 registration fee and each raised at least $1000 in donations to take part in the climb, and were treated to a special concert by the Bacon Brothers when they reached the top.

“This is not a race, this is to enjoy,” said Foundation Director Shannon Foley. “This is for all people who have been diagnosed with cancer. Take it slow. Enjoy the hike.”

The Jed Foundation held its 8th annual gala at Guastavino’s in New York on Thursday, June 11.

Hosted by former Dateline NBC anchor Stone Phillips, the event awarded Voice of Mental Health accolades to Peter Wentz of Fall Out Boy and Sheila Nevins of HBO. Actor Kevin Bacon will join his brother Michael onstage in LA tonight, March 26, for a musical performance for charity.

The Bacon Brothers – who have been performing together since 1995 and recently released their fifth album, New Years Day – will appear as part of Hard Rock Cafe’s March On Stage program, an initiative about helping people who make a difference and giving back to those people that give so selflessly of themselves. Some of the proceeds from the show will go to Musicians on Call and Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy.

“I like risks,” said Kevin. “And there’s nothing more risky about being a well known actor and playing in a rock band.”

Jonas Brothers To Play Charity Concert For Auto Show

The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) has announced the Grammy nominated Jonas Brothers will play a special concert at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena on January 18, 2009 to help raise funds for the annual Charity Preview.

Celebrity Endorsement Pulls Young Voters

A new study has revealed how celebrity endorsement can encourage young people to vote.

“Celebrities have the power to motivate civic engagement regardless of their own grasp of the issues at hand,” reported a study by Washington State University published in the Mass Communication and Society journal. “Celebrity endorsed campaigns successfully lowered complacency and helped young people believe in their own impact on the political system. Young people got involved at higher levels and became increasingly aware of societal issues.”

According to the study, initiatives from stars such as Jessica Alba – who recently featured in several ad campaigns for Declare Yourself – as well as Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé Knowles have influenced the youth vote in America. 44% of newly registered voters in 2004 were between 18 and 25.
