Marlee Matlin And Dana Delany Stand Up For Their Fathers

Marlee Matlin and Dana Delany have both paid tribute to their fathers to help raise awareness of Stand Up To Cancer.

“For people who are afraid to TALK about cancer, for people who are afraid to communicate with their loved ones about it, and for the people who want to pretend cancer doesn’t exist, either delaying diagnosis or not getting regular checkups, the consequences can be fatal,” said Marlee, whose father was diagnosed with cancer a year ago, in a post in the Huffington Post. "Doing nothing about cancer will kill you. That’s why in honor of my Dad this Father’s Day, I’m STANDING UP, encouraging men like my Dad to talk openly and freely when it comes to matters of health. It’s up to us to remind our Dads to get regular checkups, and if something just doesn’t feel right, to get to the doctor. Tell your Dad to make sure to deal with your family honestly about your fears. No one should ever be ashamed to cry. This Father’s Day, let’s remind our Dads that family and friends are probably the best weapons one could have against cancer. They can share the burden, potentially provide information and resources or just be there to hold your hand.

“I love you Dad. I want us to spend many, many more Father’s Days together. It may be true that silence is easy, but believe me when I say that when it comes to cancer, silence is the last thing the world will hear from me. You can bet on it.”

Michael McKean Wins $1 Million For Charity In Jeopardy Final

Actor Michael McKean (“Laverne and Shirley” and star of Broadway’s “Superior Donuts”) prevailed as champion of the Jeopardy! Million Dollar Celebrity Invitational Tournament during the weekend — winning $1 million for his charity the International Myeloma Foundation (IMF). This is the biggest amount ever awarded to charity in “Jeopardy!” history. It is also the largest single donation ever received by the IMF.

Myeloma is the second most common blood cancer after lymphomas, affecting an estimated 750,000 people worldwide. McKean became passionate for the cause when his friend, musician Lee Grayson, passed away from myeloma eight years ago. Regarding today’s victory, McKean said, “If some breakthroughs can be made or more research can be done due to this win, it would be incredible. There are so many amazing people at IMF who do great work.”

According to Susie Novis, president and co-founder of the IMF, McKean’s donation will be used for a special fund in honor of McKean and Grayson. “The money will fund research to find a cure and to help patients and their families through education,” Novis said. “His win has shown us how empowering being informed can be — it can change the lives of people all over the world!”

Dana Delany Wants Child Hunger To End Here

Nearly one in four children in this country face each day not knowing whether they will get enough to eat or not. But a new campaign between ConAgra Foods and Feeding America, the country’s largest hunger-relief organization, is seeking to put an end to this sobering reality facing so many of our nation’s children.

In the effort to help bring an end to childhood hunger, Desperate Housewives’ Dana Delany is joining forces with ConAgra Foods for the new Child Hunger Ends Here Neighborhood Rally campaign. The grassroots campaign, running from March through May, encourages neighborhoods, communities, and individuals to unite and host their own rally to benefit Feeding America, which has a network of more than 200 food banks across the nation.

The campaign builds on the ConAgra Foods Foundation’s recent commitment to Feeding America of 10 million dollars over five years, the largest financial donation ever given to Feeding America specifically to fight child hunger.

Stand Up To Cancer announced its list of celebrity ambassadors for 2009 last week.

The organization – which aims to raise money for cancer researchers and scientists to come together and reach their common goal: the cure for cancer – has brought names such as Marcia Cross, Kirsten Dunst, Sally Field, Mandy Moore, Dave Annable, Fran Drescher, Dana Delany, Sharon Osbourne, Patrick Wilson, Sofia Vassilieva and David Archuleta on board to help raise awareness of the cause.

“We are eternally grateful for the continuing support of the Hollywood community who have lent their time and talent to this cause, and engaged the public to do the same,” said Laura Ziskin, who is a member of SU2C executive leadership team. “The entertainment industry generously offered this initiative the most incredible resources—we want to make sure that they know all of their hard work is going toward something monumental.”

Dick Van Dyke Steals The Show At Charity Gala

The stars came out to play at the annual Geffen’s Stage For Any Age gala earlier this week.

Helen Mirren, Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson (who was honored with the Distinction in Theater Award), Martin Short, Dana Delany, Carol Burnett, Christine Lahti and Brendan Fraser were all in the crowd that helped raise over $500,000 for the charity, but it was 83-year-old Dick Van Dyke’s renditions of songs from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang that stole the show.

The seventh annual Backstage at the Geffen Gala was held at the Geffen Playhouse in Westwood, and raised money for Geffen’s Stage for Any Age – a non-profit organization that seeks to make the cultural resources of the Geffen Playhouse available to all of Los Angeles’ diverse communities. Their programs for students, seniors, and underserved populations are designed to stimulate the intellect, imagination, and creative spirit. To increase access to the theater experience, activities are carried out on site as well as in neighborhoods, schools, social service agencies, and community centers throughout Los Angeles.

Grey's Anatomy Star Says No To Proposition 8

Grey’s Anatomy actor TR Knight is the latest star to step up against Proposition 8 in California.

The 35-year-old has donated $50,000 towards the campaign to defeat the ballot initiative that would ban same-sex marriage in California. His support of the issue follows recent donations to the cause by Brad Pitt ($100,000), Steven Spielberg ($100,000), David Geffen ($50,000), Peter Wentz, and support from Barack Obama and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ellen DeGeneres, and Fall Out Boy.

Knight’s donation comes in response to Ohio entrepreneur Jonathan Lewis’ challenge to the entertainment industry for LA’s actors to raise $500,000 against Prop. 8. Lewis and his family has pledged to match the contributions dollar for dollar. The issue goes to the polls on November 4, and according to a new survey carried out by CBS in San Francisco this week, 47% are going to vote for the ban with 42% likely to vote against.

Stars Prepare For Oscar Glory With Charity Parties

The next few days will be busy for Hollywood’s elite, as they practice their speeches and iron their gowns in anticipation of the 80th Academy Awards to be held on Sunday, February 24. As always, part of the pizzazz of the event is the glamorous parties in the days leading up to the big night. And although many of these soirees give the rich and famous a chance to be seen in the right places, a few are designed to raise awareness and funds for causes other than fame.

Wednesday, February 20, will see the Fifth Annual Global Green Pre-Oscar Party hit Hollywood between the eyes, with an event formulated to promote “smart solutions to global warming”. The party, to be held at the Avalon in Hollywood, will feature performances by Damien Rice and Michelle Branch, as well as Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, the stars of Oscar-nominated musical, Once.

A huge selection of stars are expected to attend the event, including Salma Hayek, Alicia Silverstone, Val Kilmer, Adrian Grenier, Dana Delany, and Josie Maran. There is also a strong possibility that committee members Orlando Bloom and Leonardo DiCaprio may also attend.
