Latin Grammy Winners Fight Exploitation And Trafficking

Nineteen-time Latin Grammy winners Calle 13 joined forces with UNICEF, MTV Latin America and Tr3s: MTV, Música y Más last week to launch the MTV EXIT (End Exploitation and Trafficking) campaign within Latin American and US Hispanic communities.

The multi-media campaign aims to reach Spanish-speaking youth in Latin America and the US to increase awareness and prevention around human trafficking and exploitation through creative content, digital media interaction, community events and opportunities for direct participation.

Lured by false promises offering opportunities for a better life, at least 550,000 children, adolescents and youth have become victims of trafficking in Latin America and the Caribbean; often forced into unsafe sexual practices and drug use, they are at a heightened risk of contracting HIV.

You’ve had your say and cast your votes, and today Russell Brand and Kristen Wiig have been named as PETA’s sexiest celebrity vegetarians for 2011.

The pair were up against last year’s winner’s – Olivia Wilde and Bob Harper – as well as Bill Clinton, Bryan Adams, Jared Leto, Alyssa Milano, Aimee Teegarden, Isabel Lucas, Hayden Panettiere, Ellen DeGeneres and past winners Anthony Kiedis, Leona Lewis, Kellie Pickler and a host of others.

According to PETA: "Russell, a vegetarian since the age of 14, keeps us endlessly entertained with his wit and crazy antics, which always leave us wanting more. He explains, “You shouldn’t eat animals, it’s mean to them.” Kristen makes us laugh until we cry in whatever she does—whether she’s lighting up the big screen in films like Bridesmaids or cracking us up with her unique characters on Saturday Night Live. E! personalities Giuliana Rancic and Jason Kennedy hosted Generosity Water’s 3rd Annual Night of Generosity at the home of Wayne Kao, music producer, in Los Angeles, on March 18.

The event raised over $100,000 for the charity. Generosity Water is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to ending the clean water crisis in developing countries.

World Wildlife Fund’s Texting for Tigers promotion launched yesterday, giving people the ability to aid in saving wild tigers from extinction through their mobile phones.

By texting “TIGERS” to 20222 from a cell phone, a $10 donation will be made to support WWF’s efforts to protect tigers. With as few as 3,200 tigers left in the wild, down from around 100,000 a century ago, the species is one of the most threatened on the planet. WWF’s goal is to double the global tiger population by 2022.

30 Seconds To Mars Raises $100,100 For Haiti

The recent tragedy in Haiti struck a chord in 30 Seconds to Mars front man Jared Leto. The actor and singer spent a year of his childhood residing in the Caribbean country and has not forgotten his “eye-opening” and “life changing” experience.

In the wake of the violent Haitian earthquakes, Leto and his band mates have employed eBay to raise $100,100 for Haitian relief. The charity auction included concert tickets, an exclusive backstage meet and greet, and dinner with the band.

A host of celebrities will attend tonight’s (April 24) “An Evening Of Women: Celebrating Art, Music and Equality” at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Presented by the LA Gay and Lesbian Center, the annual event is widely regarded as one of the premier events for women in California and the nation. According to the Center, “It continues to fulfill the purpose of its founder by inspiring women to participate in civil rights and social service causes, by showcasing the accomplishments of women leaders.”

The annual Carousel of Hope Gala will take place this weekend to raise money for the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes.

Presented by Jay Leno, the gala will take place at the Beverly Hilton on Saturday, October 25, and will honor Denzel Washington for his charity work.

This year celebrates 30 years of helping children with diabetes through the Barbara Davis Center for Childhood Diabetes. Held every two years, this is the 18th Carousel of Hope. From its inception in 1978, the Ball has raised over $70 million.
