Farm Sanctuary Celebrates 25 Years Of Animal Protection

This year, Farm Sanctuary, the organization responsible for bringing farm animal issues into the mainstream consciousness celebrates its 25th anniversary.

As the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, Farm Sanctuary urged passage of the first U.S. laws to protect animals on farms, initiated the first cruelty convictions at stockyards and slaughterhouses, and established the first and largest rescue and refuge network for farm animals in North America. Along the way, the organization has encouraged the public to embrace compassionate living through public campaigns, like getting the first veggie burger on Burger King menus and welcoming visitors to its sanctuaries, where thousands of people have had transformational experiences — including Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone, who became a vegan after a visit to the New York Shelter.

Celebrities Sign Letter To Stop Tail Docking

An animal rights charity has gathered support from a number of celebrities for its urgent call to end a cruel practice commonplace in the dairy industry.

On behalf of Kim Basinger, Alicia Silverstone, Bill Maher, Bob Barker and a host of other California celebrities – as well as their more than 200,000 members and supporters – Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, sent a letter today to Governor Schwarzenegger urging him to do the right thing and sign a bill sitting on his desk that would end the cruel and outdated practice of amputating dairy cows’ tails.

Both chambers of the California legislature recently passed a bill that would ban tail docking in the dairy industry, but the bill will not become law unless the governor signs it.

Pamela Anderson Steps Up For The Apes In Florida

Pamela Anderson was in Florida on Saturday, March 14, to celebrate the 20th anniversary for the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida (ARFF) – an event hosted by Bob Barker – after writing an open letter to Florida governor Charlie Crist about ‘road-side zoos’ in the state, in which she says chimpanzees and other animals are kept in less-than-adequate enclosures.

“With so many frustrated great apes stewing in squalid facilities in Florida, it is only a matter of time before a similar tragedy strikes your state,” she wrote. “PETA and I appeal to you to take action to prevent Florida’s roadside zoos from keeping great apes and to ensure that these intelligent primates are transferred to approved sanctuaries to live out the remainder of their lives in suitable surroundings.”

Held at the Broward County Convention Center in Ft Lauderdale, the event featured delicious vegan food, entertainment, an awards ceremony, speeches, book signings, an open bar featuring organic Floridian wine and a silent auction that included items such as an “LA Confidential” poster signed by Kim Basinger and a jersey signed by Yao Ming.

Jamelia Launches Fragrance, Bares All For Charity

Pop star Jamelia has recently been making it her business to lend support to charities.

In January she launched a perfume in support of MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation, which aims to raise awareness of AIDS and HIV. Proceeds from each bottle of “Rougeberry” sold will go directly to the Foundation.

Jamelia said: "A lot of people are thinking it’s not really their problem, it’s not going to happen to them.
