Christy Turlington Burns visited St Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York – where both her children were born – earlier this month for a special screening of her documentary, No Woman No Cry.

The emotionally charged film follows the stories of women in Tanzania, Bangladesh, Guatemala and the United States as they face critical junctures in their pregnancies. The film explores the barriers millions of women face when trying to access critical care throughout their pregnancies and while delivering, along with the often simple solutions that could save their lives.

“Dr. Jacques Moritz – Director, Gynecology Division, Department of OB/GYN – served as my host for a fascinating conversation that followed about maternal mortality right here at home,” blogged Christy after the screening. "[He cited] Amnesty International’s Deadly Delivery report, which came out in 2010, just a month before NO WOMAN, NO CRY premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. In his presentation Dr. Moritz not only shared some shocking statistics with his colleagues about our national statistics, but also about NYC in particular.

Christy Turlington Burns has written an extremely interesting blog for her Every Mother Counts charity about the world’s expanding population.

“Like many Americans, my family just celebrated Halloween with all its tricks and excesses of treats,” she wrote last week. "In all the excitement, an important piece of news may not have made it on to the radar screen for many of us, though it may represent a more shocking—and very real—Halloween worthy scare. The UNFPA estimated that this October 31 marked the approximate day that the world population passed the 7 billion mark. 7 billion. To some, that may sound like just an abstract number or an interesting factoid, but the truth is our global population growth will have serious implications for all of us and of course for our children and grandchildren.

“7 billion is not a magic number in and of itself; maybe the real ‘scare’ is that it isn’t contained to a date shared with Halloween. With about two babies being born every second, the seven billion figure will keep climbing. Some estimates say that it could reach 10 billion by 2100.

On October 5th, Emilio Estevez and Martin Sheen will premiere their new movie “The Way” with a screening to benefit the Walkabout Foundation in NYC.

President Clinton will be the screening’s keynote speaker, supported by honorary chair committee members Mario Bell, Paul Farmer, Donna Karan, Mike Myers, Chris Pine, Ivanka Trump and Christy Turlington Burns.

Founded by Carolina and Luis Gonzales-Bunster, the Walkabout Foundation focuses on finding a cure for paralysis and donating wheelchairs to people in need all over the world. By pure coincidence, Carolina and Luis’ father Rolando met Emilio on a flight during which they started talking about the Camino de Santiago, the ancient pilgrimage path after which the movie is named. Bono And Celebrity Friends Lead PSA Against Famine

Bono has recruited some of his celebrity friends – including George Clooney, Jessica Alba and Joe Jonas for a new charity PSA aimed at raising awareness about the famine in East Africa.

“Drought, violence and political instability have invited in the grim reaper on a scale we have not seen in 20 years… more than 30,000 children have died in just three months,” he writes in The Huffington Post. "The pictures from Dadaab look like a nightmare from centuries past. Yet, this is the 21st century and these pictures are real and, on the whole, unseen. The food crisis in the Horn of Africa is nothing short of a humanitarian catastrophe, but it is getting less attention than the latest Hollywood break-ups and make-ups.

Fashion icon and women’s health activist, Christy Turlington Burns will participate in the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 6 to raise money and awareness for her non-profit organization, Every Mother Counts.

Every Mother Counts is an advocacy and mobilization campaign founded by Turlington Burns in 2010 to increase public awareness of and support for improved maternal and child health. Now in its second year, Every Mother Counts seeks to engage new audiences to better understand the challenges and the solutions so that we can take action to improve the lives of families by improving the health of girls and women worldwide.

To put things in to perspective globally, for each of the 16,000 female runners that participated in last year’s marathon, two times the number of women die due to childbirth related causes each month. Hundreds of thousands of women die during pregnancy and childbirth each year, and 90% of these deaths can be prevented if given the proper tools and resources.

Women Deliver, an international conference addressing women’s health issues, is currently on in Washington. Among the many stars to be part of the conference is Christy Turlington, who has blogged about the importance of the conference.

Glee's Jane Lynch To Host Do Something Charity Awards

DoSomething.org has announced comedic actress and star of “Glee”, Jane Lynch as host of its star-studded “Do Something Awards” live telecast on VH1 on July 19, 2010 at 9PM EDT.

Bono Leads Celebrity PSA For (RED) Charity

(RED) has announced the launch of The Lazarus Effect Campaign, a multi-platform campaign across TV, online and print, including an HBO documentary airing on May 24, that will help raise awareness of the transformative effect of antiretroviral medicine for those living with HIV in Africa.

Launching April 29 on HBO, the awareness campaign will roll out across various TV and online networks in the coming weeks. The campaign equates the relative value of 40 cents by comparing trivial items worth 40 cents e.g. a stick of gum, a smear of lipstick — to the value of one day’s worth of life transforming antiretroviral medication.

Christy Turlington's Documentary On Maternal Mortality

Model, editor, author, activist and now director Christy Turlington has made a new documentary, No Woman, No Cry, which will premier later this month at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City.

The film is Turlington’s attempt to bring attention to promising work being done around the world to improve maternal mortality.

“In 2005, while pregnant with my second child,” said Turlington, “I traveled with the organization CARE to El Salvador. As part of CARE’s water project, I visited a remote village where pregnant women and mothers of newborns had walked for miles to access clean water. For some, this was also their only opportunity to receive some form of antenatal and postnatal care.”

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow hosted a charity evening for an organization that offers instruction in yoga and meditation to students in New York public schools last Wednesday, February 25.

The evening raised money for Bent On Learning, a group set up in 2001 with the aim of improving the physical fitness and cognitive, social and emotional skills of New York City public school students by providing regular instruction in yoga and meditation.
