Lance Armstrong Stands Up To Cancer Tonight

Don’t miss Stand Up To Cancer on ABC, CBS and NBC today, Friday, September 5, at 8 p.m. (EST).

A spectacular line up of talent including Jennifer Aniston, James Taylor, Scarlett Johansson, Meryl Streep, David Cook, Christina Applegate, Lance Armstrong, Jack Black, Kirsten Dunst, Charles Barkley, America Ferrera, Halle Berry, Hilary Swank, Forest Whitaker, Jimmy Fallon and Keanu Reeves will appear on the one-hour telecast. The celebrities are set to educate you, move you and entertain you, and will even be on hand to answer your calls in the celebrity phone bank.

The premiere TV performance of Just Stand Up – the star studded charitable single in support of Stand Up To Cancer – will be performed by legendary recording artists Mariah Carey, Beyoncé Knowles, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Miley Ray Cyrus, Melissa Etheridge, Ashanti, Natasha Bedingfield, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, Leona Lewis, LeAnn Rimes, and Carrie Underwood.

Doug Ulman, President of the Lance Armstrong Foundation says, “Inspired to act by their own personal experiences with cancer, the Stand Up to Cancer team recognizes that we can no longer rely on the current system alone to give us the breakthroughs we need. They are calling on the public to help take matters into our own hands, investing in a revolution that will change the way scientists and clinicians work to understand and treat cancer. Stand Up To Cancer is more than a rallying cry. It is a galvanizing force created to urgently move cancer research forward.”

Tonight’s program is raising funds to build “Dream Teams” made up of scientists, clinicians, technicians and other experts.

Harrison Ford and Sam Waterston’s Water Awards

Orange County, California, kicked off this summer season with their largest fund raiser yet, The SeaChange Summer Party.

Held at a private estate on Laguna Beach, the event raised $1 million through ticket sales and auction to benefit Oceana, an organization that campaigns to protect and restore the world’s oceans. Actors Harrison Ford and Sam Waterston were honored at the event for their ongoing, significant ocean conservation efforts.

“We have done great things before in the human history,” said Ford. “We can do it again. Let’s not let this award be an empty vessel – let’s work for fundamental transformation – a real SeaChange in ocean policy.”

Several celebrities attended the event including Beau Bridges, Calista Flockhart, Diane Keaton, Diane Lane, Jeff Goldblum and Ted Danson.

Danson, who is a board member of Oceana, explained some of Oceana’s causes and projects to Variety:

“Basically, 70% of all the world’s fisheries have been fished to the brink of collapse; 30% of them have collapsed. Also habitat destruction: We have worked with fisheries and councils in the Northern Pacific and along the California coast to put aside 500,000 square miles of ocean floor the bottom trawler cannot make use of anymore.

“Also a pollution campaign that we have at Oceana – seafood contamination: one out of every six women of child bearing years has too much mercury in her system to safely give birth to a child without the possibility of neurological damage.

“These issues are so big, and there is a ticking clock.”

Due to the huge success of The SeaChange Summer Party, organizers are hoping it will become an annual fundraising event. So is Oceana.

Diane Keaton and Andie MacDowell Fight Cancer Together

On November 7th, Diane Keaton and Andie MacDowell co-hosted L’Oréal’s “A Night Of Hope” event at Murano in Los Angeles. A silent auction of exceptional photography, fabulous fashion, and accessories from big names including Chanel, Vuitton and De Beers raised money for the benefit of the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund (OCRF), a charity that L’Oréal has supported for a decade.

OCRF is dedicated to research and awareness for ovarian cancer, which claims over 15,000 lives in the US alone each year. The problem with this type of cancer is that there is no effective method of early detection, resulting in late diagnosis in 75 percent of cases, too often too late.

Says L’Oréal Paris president Carol J. Hamilton, “Since 1997, we have helped to raise over $13 million to fund life-saving research and to promote awareness building programs to help empower women to make educated choices about their health and well-being.”

Besides L’Oréal’s search for cure donations and awareness programs, the company also contributes through the sales of signature cosmetics and jewelry collections that are available for purchase online. These include “Color of Hope” cosmetics and jewelry to which a sterling silver pendant and earrings were added this year, as well as a special diamond necklace to commemorate the A Night Of Hope event.

Other L’Oréal spokespeople in attendance included Eva Longoria, Kerry Washington, and Dayle Haddon.
