Early Punk Goes Cowboy With Kevin Costner For Gulf Coast Aid

Almost 25 years after it was filmed, the Queen of L.A. Punk, X singer Exene Cervenka and music video director Modi Frank present their previously unreleased cowboy satire “Bad Day” featuring legendary X front man John Doe, Grammy Award winner Dave Alvin, Oscar-winning writer Michael Blake, and with a comedic performance by Academy Award winner, Kevin Costner.

Now available for the first time as a digital download at BadDayMovie.com, viewers will be able to “pay” whatever they choose for the download in order to view “Bad Day”. A portion of the proceeds from “Bad Day” are going to Gulf Coast aid organizations that will help both those people directly affected by this disaster and the precious wetlands of the Gulf coast area. In regards to their co-star Kevin Costner, who spent millions of dollars over the last decade to develop centrifuge clean-up machinery for just these types of oil spills, both women say, “We are both so proud of Kevin and grateful for all he’s doing to help in the Gulf.”

Bad Day boasts an inspired cast of legendary Los Angeles musicians, writers and actors at a “secret” shooting location in Chatsworth, California. This short silent film, photographed and co-written by X’s Exene and directed by award-winning filmmaker Modi Frank, is a 20-minute tribute to the early days of the one-reel Westerns. The film blends Exene’s love for black & white films, with old fashioned title cards, western sets, and Modi’s vision of capturing local talent having a very unusal day in a small pioneer town, with an elegant, poignant soundtrack by Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter Dave Alvin along with X and Knitters drummer D. J. Bonebrake.

Kevin Costner Becomes Bodyguard For Dog Charity

Kevin Costner is supporting a charity that rescues dogs from death row.

The Orange Dog saves dogs which are about to be put down in overcrowded shelters by flying them to Canada, where they are found new homes. Last week, Costner flew from Colorado to Alberta with his own dog, Daisy, to raise awareness of the organization.

“When this plane is operating at its best, it’s not just taking people around the world, it’s hauling animals,” the actor told Access Hollywood. "[It’s] essentially an exchange of animals that were going to be euthanized. Instead of having that happen, they are now making their way to Canada, having a second chance at life.

Kevin Costner's Efforts To Clean Up The Gulf Coast

For the past 15 years, actor-musician Kevin Costner has been funding a team of Ocean Therapy Solutions (OTS) scientists to develop technology to deal with oil spills. Last month, in response to the underwater oil disaster in the Gulf Coast region, Costner pitched OTS’s invention to help with the clean up.

The invention operates like a vacuum cleaner plus filtration system, removing 99% of the crude from the water. The contaminated water is drawn in, broken down and the oil is released through a separate tube. According to its website, the largest of OTS’s machines can clean water at a rate of 200 gallons per minute and extract up to 2,000 barrels of oil a day.

“The machines are basically sophisticated centrifuge devices that can handle a huge volume of water and separate the oil at unprecedented rates,” said John Houghtaling, CEO of Ocean Therapy Solutions.

“I’ve been helping kids — at-risk kids — for a long time,” he told The Desert Sun last week. “Thirty years. It seems like now times are even more troubled for young people.”

Kevin Coster Rocks For Charity

Kevin Costner and his band Modern West rocked out during Super Bowl weekend in an effort to show people how serious he is about music, and to raise money for charity.

The 54-year-old actor said he’d be happy to ditch the fame of celebrity for the chance to just perform.

“It’s clearly not the need for attention. I’ve had enough of that for a lifetime,” Costner said laughing. “It’s no fun being a celebrity. I’d rather be a performer. I’d rather sing for my supper.”

Celebs For Kids Makes A $7 Million Challenge

Dozens of celebrities including actors Matt Damon, Cheech Marin, and Hockey Hall of Famer Grant Fuhr are helping to raise funds for a research centre dedicated to pediatric rheumatology at Canada’s B.C. Children’s Hospital

Inspired by Karim Chandani, founder of Celebs for Kids in partnership with the Arthritis Society of Canada and Lupus Canada, the $3.5 million project – the Ross Petty Research Chair in Paediatric Rheumatology – will address the enormous lack of knowledge about Lupus in both the medical field and the general public, and the fact that there is currently no such research or treatment facility in Canada.

According to lupus sufferer Dr Jan McCaffrey, lupus is difficult to diagnose or treat because it affects every patient differently and has only a fraction of the research or public awareness compared to that of other well-known diseases. It is an autoimmune disease that attacks healthy body systems and tissues, resulting in pain and organ damage. McCaffrey says, “If I had to write a bumper sticker for doctors and lupus with a view of helping diagnose patients sooner, I would say, ‘If it doesn’t make sense, think of lupus.’”

Celebrity Fight Night A Knock-Out Success

It takes a champ to raise millions for charity, and on Saturday night Muhammad Ali proved he is the Greatest of All Time while hosting the 14th annual Celebrity Fight Night. This yearly star-studded event attracts the who’s-who of charitable giving in efforts to raise money in the fight against Parkinson’s disease.

“This is probably the best night hands down,” said Phoenix Suns’ legend Tom Chambers. “I have done a lot of charity work since retiring in 1997 and this is a night that we make an effort to mark down on the calendar each year; it’s just that special.”

Celebrities Wear Their Hearts On Their Sleeves

This Summer has seen both style and flair in the fashion world, and nowhere has this been more evident than in the clothes worn by celebrities. From the metallic mini-dresses that made a splash at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards to the dazzling array of gowns seen at the 79th Academy Awards, celebrity fashions have made it a year to remember. Yet, in a season that has included a host of environmental and humanitarian events, many stars have used what they wear to raise awareness of some big social and ecological subjects. They have embraced issue-based labels as a way of provoking thought on some of the most important problems facing the world today.

One such label is Threads For Thought, a contemporary lifestyle brand of clothing for men and women. With a portion of its proceeds going to the Natural Resources Defense Council and the International Rescue Committee, Threads For Thought produces designs which draw inspiration from three major areas: Africa, the Environment, and Peace.
The 100% organic cotton garments have been worn by a multitude of celebrities who support the brand’s concepts, including American Idol judge, Paula Abdul, and actor Jamie Foxx. Singer Gwen Stefani has been setting trends with a selection of Threads For Thought scarves and tops, and actor Don Cheadle, well known for his humanitarian work in Darfur, was spotted wearing a TFT t-shirt on “Inside The Actor’s Studio”.
