Peace Day Concert 2008 To Rock London

After last year’s sell out show, the annual Peace One Day concert is set to rock the Royal Albert Hall in London.

World Peace Day has been held on September 21 annually since 2001, when the United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted September 21 as a day of global ceasefire and non-violence. The initiative came from an idea by Jeremy Gilley, who founded his non-profit organization – Peace One Day – in 1999. Since then he has amassed an impressive list of supporters, including Chris Martin, Sir Richard Branson, Angelina Jolie, Alan Rickman, and Michael Douglas.

This year’s concert will see performances from Annie Lennox, Bryan Adams, and a guest appearance from Jude Law. There will also be a gala screening of The Day After Peace, the acclaimed new documentary film made by Jeremy Gilley. The film, which received a great reception at its premiere during the 61st Cannes Film Festival, features Kofi Annan, The Dalai Lama, Angelina Jolie, Jude Law, Annie Lennox and Jonny Lee Miller.

The 2007 concert featured acts such as Corinne Bailey Rae, Kate Nash, James Morrison, and Yusuf, with video segments from David Beckham and the Dalai Lama.

Tickets to the 2008 Peace Day Concert can be bought from Ticketmaster, and cost between £35 and £55.

Karaoke With The Stars Raises Much Needed Cash

Gwyneth Paltrow might be about to outshine Coldplay-singing husband Chris Martin behind the microphone… but maybe not quite yet. The 35-year-old actress showed off her vocal talents at a charity karaoke show in London last Thursday, after a $90,000 bid prompted her to take to the stage.

The event, held at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, attracted a number of stars to get up on stage and sing their favorite tunes to benefit the Hoping Foundation. Hosted by veteran presenter Bruce Forsyth, the evening’s entertainment hoped to raise $1 million to help Palestinian children.

Paltrow is reported to have sung Roberta Flack’s “Killing Me Softly”, and gained a standing ovation for her effort. Other stars to hit the stage included Jeff Beck, Jarvis Cocker, Lou Reed, Nick Cave, Stella McCartney, and Lily Cole.

This is the second year that Karaoke With The Stars has been held by the Hoping Foundation, with last year’s event raising over $700,000 to go towards the community programs the Foundation runs in refugee camps.

Gwyneth Paltrow Donates $75,000 To Food Bank

Actress Gwyneth Paltrow has made a huge donation of $75,000 to an organization that helps feed the hungry in New York.

The 35-year-old mother-of-two and wife of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin made the donation to the Food Bank For New York City following a Food Bank gala last Saturday, April 19. It was the second time Paltrow has attended an event for the organization this month – she was guest of honor at the Can-Do Awards on April 8, which raised over $1 million for the Food Bank.

“I’ve been thinking about all the crap my children have and how much food we throw away,” the actress told the guests at the gala. “We have to do better.”

The Food Bank distributes free food to over 1.5 million hungry New Yorkers every year – that’s equivalent to over 68 million pounds of food annually, or 250,000 free meals a day for New Yorkers who otherwise would go hungry or not eat enough. Jude Law to Make Film in Afghanistan For World Peace Day

British actor Jude Law is to film a new documentary for the BBC in Afghanistan, as part of the lead up to World Peace Day on September 21.

The 35 year old star of “Cold Mountain” and “The Road To Perdition” will join documentary maker and humanitarian Jeremy Gilley in a film about the effects of war on Afghan children, and the efforts of UNICEF to provide aid. The pair will also record the preparations made by UNICEF in the war-torn country to celebrate this year’s World Peace Day.

“This is a historic project, rooted in film,” said Law. “I’m immensely proud to be a part of it.”

“This process is about creating an annual moment of global unity,” said Law, regarding the work of Peace One Day and the upcoming concert. “It can only work if we all become involved, and it’s essential that we do”.

Stars Support Oxfam's Darfur Appeal

Oxfam has launched an online celebrity and public auction to raise funds for its $10 million appeal to help victims of the violence in Darfur and Chad.

Actors, musicians and artists are showing their support for Oxfam’s work with donations of autographed items, clothing, art and concert tickets. Available items include a Dolce & Gabbana jacket worn by Chris Martin on Coldplay’s Rush of Blood Tour which is signed by the band members, Sir Elton John’s tailor-made Donatella Versace suit, gold Roger Vivier Shoes signed by Sienna Miller, and a script from The Queen signed by Dame Helen Mirren.

According to UN figures, four years of ethnic strife in Darfur have resulted in at least 200,000 deaths and left more than two million people displaced. Oxfam provides aid to 470,000 people in Sudan’s Darfur and 60,000 in neighboring Chad, which has been affected by the years of unrest.

Oxfam’s work in the area costs $10 million each year, and the charity hopes this auction will raise at least $500,000 towards those costs. The public is invited to either donate items to the auction or simply make a monetary donation.
