DoSomething.org Announces Top 20 Celebs Gone Good 2011

DoSomething.org, one of the largest U.S. organizations that helps teens take action on causes they care about, released today its fourth annual ‘Top 20 Celebs Gone Good’ list.

Lady Gaga continues her reign as the star who uses her celebrity to do the most good. Known for her support of gay rights, AIDS, and poverty, she focused primarily this year on bullying, even taking her thoughts to the White House in December. She also announced the creation of her own charity, the Born This Way Foundation, which aims to empower youth and lead them to a brave new society where each individual is accepted and loved as the person they were born to be.

Making a meteoric rise to number two this year is Justin Bieber, up from number 10 last year. His fast rise is due to his prolific work with Pencils of Promise, an organization that builds schools in Laos and Guatemala. Justin is also a consistent supporter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, raised funds for charity with his fragrance and holiday album, and recently distributed $100,000 to Whitney Elementary School in Las Vegas.

NFL Star Launches Giving Assistant App

NFL star Adrian Peterson and his All Day Foundation will make the holiday shopping experience more meaningful with the debut of a revolutionary new browser app called the GIVING ASSISTANT, which directs funds raised in online shopping to programs that support youth, build self-esteem, promote healthy lifestyles and prevent gang involvement. The GIVING ASSISTANT is a free download powered by GlobalMojo, a socially conscious technology company based in Seattle and San Francisco.

The GIVING ASSISTANT installs seamlessly into your favorite browser in seconds (available for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer) and notifies you of more than 1,000 participating partners when you are shopping. Each time a purchase is made with an approved partner, a percentage of sales is automatically redirected to programs that support at-risk children at no additional cost to the shopper. Whether you’re gifting books, DVDs or clothing, or planning your holiday travel, consumers can give twice this holiday season…once to those on their own shopping list and once to others in need.

Jennifer Aniston, Alicia Keys And Demi Moore Direct Breast Cancer Film

Breast cancer is more than a disease, more than statistics. It’s people, whose lives are forever changed by a diagnosis. Their stories are the basis of “Five,” a movie that will premiere on Lifetime on Oct. 10 in collaboration with Ford Warriors in Pink.

Directors of the movie are Jennifer Aniston, Alicia Keys, Demi Moore, Patty Jenkins and Penelope Spheeris.

“Warriors in Pink has always been about the courage and the strength it takes to fight this disease,” said Tracy Magee, Ford’s primary brand experiential manager. “This year we’ve really been focusing on people’s stories – the stories behind the disease. This Lifetime project ties in extremely well with our Warriors in Pink campaign.”

Demi Moore And Ashton Kutcher Support Football For Good Campaign

This football season, NFL star Adrian Peterson and his All Day Foundation are partnering with the DNA Foundation, created by Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, to make each touchdown count for more than just points.

Through Football for Good, players and fans are coming together to raise funds and awareness to bring an end to child sex trafficking and support programs that enrich the lives of children around the country. It is estimated that more than 2 million children are victims of sex trafficking around the world. Football for Good works to raise awareness about this issue and gather support for programs that address the needs of some of our country’s most vulnerable youth.

Donate now and join Adrian, Ashton Kutcher, Demi Moore and players from around the NFL in raising funds to make a difference in the lives of children, and win great prizes along the way.

Sarah Silverman Thinks Circus Elephants Are No Laughing Matter

Sarah Silverman may be known for her cutting humor, but when it comes to animal abuse, she’s not joking around. The comedian has sent a deadly serious letter on PETA’s behalf to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) calling on the government to remove four ailing elephants— including a fellow Sara—from the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus.

In the letter, Silverman explains that recent veterinary evidence shows that the elephants are being forced to perform grueling tricks despite suffering from lameness and, in two cases, arthritis—the number one reason for euthanasia in captive elephants.

“I am writing to urge you to immediately seize four ailing elephants traveling with the Ringling Bros. circus,” Sarah wrote. "My friends at PETA have expert veterinary evidence showing that Nicole, Karen, Juliette, and Sara are being forced to perform grueling tricks despite suffering from lameness, and, in the cases of Nicole and Karen, arthritis as well. Arthritis is the number one reason for euthanasia in captive elephants, and veterinarians have cautioned that if their situation is not improved, Juliette and Sara will suffer life-threatening arthritis just as Karen and Nicole do.

CNN To Screen Demi Moore's Documentary On Nepal's Stolen Children

A new CNN documentary on the trade of humans in Nepal and featuring anti-sex trafficking activist Demi Moore will premiere worldwide this Sunday, June 26.

Nepal’s Stolen Children: A CNN Freedom Project Documentary also features 2010 CNN Hero of the Year Anuradha Koirala and her organisation, Maiti Nepal, which has rescued more than 12,000 stolen Nepalese children from sex trafficking since 1993.

Moore is a passionate advocate for victims of human trafficking and through her organization, DNA Foundation, she is outspoken about the need to address and attack the demand side of sex trafficking. Nepal’s Stolen Children follows Moore as she spends time in the Maiti Nepal shelter, hearing emotional first-hand accounts from dozens of girls who had been trafficked. She travels from Kathmandu to Bhairahawa, a hotbed of human trafficking, to document how and where girls from Nepal are smuggled into India to work in the sex trade. Moore also meets with Nepal’s Prime Minister, Jhalanath Khanal, to discuss his country’s problem with sex trafficking and how it’s being addressed.

Following a letter written by Demi Moore and pressure from PETA, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners in Georgia yesterday voted in favor of a proposal that protects elephants in circuses by banning the use of bullhooks in the county.

Demi wrote to the Board of Commissioners earlier this week: "I am writing in support of a proposal that would protect elephants in circuses by banning the use of bullhooks and similar devices in Fulton County.

“A bullhook is an ugly device that looks like a fireplace poker—it’s a heavy rod with a sharp metal hook and spike on one end that is used by trainers to beat, jab, hook, and yank elephants in order to force them to perform difficult and confusing tricks. Their use also leads to injuries such as puncture wounds and abscesses.

Photos: Celebrities Join Real Men Don't Buy Girls Campaign

As reported earlier this week by LookToTheStars.org, Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher have been joined by a host of their celebrity friends for a new initiative to fight child sex slavery.

“Child sex slavery is a difficult issue to think about, which makes it all the more important that we do,” remarked Ashton Kutcher. “Real Men do not ever buy children for sex. Period.”

Added Demi Moore: “People don’t realize child sex slavery is a serious problem in the United States. Young girls are victimized in the commercial sex industry every day. No 13-year-old girl chooses to be exploited for sex. Real Men love, care, and protect girls. Real Men don’t buy girls.”

Demi And Ashton Fight Child Sex Slavery With Celebrity Charity Video

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher have been joined by a host of their celebrity friends – including Justin Timberlake, Sean Penn, Jamie Foxx, Drake, Jason Mraz and Bradley Cooper – for a new video initiative to fight child sex slavery.

Demi and Ashton are using their charity – the DNA Foundation – to launch the campaign, with its message that “Real Men Don’t Buy Girls.” According to CNN, 100,000 to 300,000 American children between 11 and 14 are vulnerable to being sold for sex every year.

“The average age of a girl involved in the sex trade is 13,” said Kutcher. "And the average man who buys a girl is 30-years-old, has no prior criminal record, and has a well-paying job.

Kate Winslet Enlists Celebrity Charity Help For New Book

Kate Winslet has asked some of her celebrity friends to wear a special “magic” hat for a new book benefiting her autism charity, the Golden Hat Foundation.

Winslet has amassed a collection of photos from an amazing array of her friends and renowned personalities who have donned this special hat, taken a self portrait, and passed the hat along from one person to another. Among the participants whose photos are featured in the book are Anna Wintour, Ben Stiller, Brigitte Lacombe, Christina Aguilera, David Souffan, Demi Moore, Don Cheadle, Elijah Wood, Ellen Page, Javier Bardem, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jude Law, Julianne Moore, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Laura Dern, Liev Schreiber, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Maria Sharapova, Marion Cottillard, Meryl Streep, Michael Kors, Naomi Watts, Pedro Almodovar, Peter Sarsgaard, Ricky Gervais and many, many more.

Winslet found inspiration for this project in her friends Margret Dagmar Ericsdottir and Ericsdottir"s son Keli, who lives with a severe form of non-verbal autism. Winslet met Ericsdottir when she narrated a documentary film, A Mother’s Courage: Talking Back To Autism, about the family"s mission to find a way to connect with Keli. Eventually specialists “unlocked” Keli by teaching him ways to communicate. Despite hardship, Keli now composes beautiful and deeply moving poetry. One of the poems, among the many included in the book, is called “The Golden Hat,” which describes a magical hat that enables an autistic boy to communicate.

Demi Moore Finds Inspiration In Haiti

Demi Moore just returned from a visit to earthquake ravaged Haiti, and seems to have found inspiration in the rubble.

Moore and Ashton Kutcher’s new charity, the DNA Foundation, is focused on the sex slave trade, and tends to use public awareness in its efforts to eventually bring the trade to an end. DNA is not about cleaning up after natural disasters. In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper last week, Moore explained why she went to Haiti and what she found there.

“[Ashton and I] became aware of the Restavek system, which is about 300,000 children who are enslaved to do all the work, who sleep on the floor and in most cases it’s the young girls who are sexually exploited.”
