Call To Ban Shark Fins Gains Support Of Some Big Fish

On both sides of the world, the movement to ban the trade and sale of shark fin products has gained an impressive roster of noteworthy supporters including Leonardo DiCaprio, James Cameron, Wolfgang Puck, Gordon Ramsey, Richard Branson, Yao Ming, Mario Batali, Edward Norton, and Chinese billionaire Zhang Yue.

In California, WildAid, NRDC, and The Humane Society of the United States worked with DiCaprio, Norton, and Yao to write a joint letter to Governor Jerry Brown, urging him to sign California’s Assembly Bill 376, which will ban the import, trade, and possession of shark fin in California. AB 376 has already passed both legislative bodies with bi-partisan support – and currently awaits the Governor’s signature. The letter, also signed by over 50 additional notables including James Cameron, musician Jackson Browne, and actress Rosario Dawson, asserts that the ban is “absolutely necessary if we are to conserve sharks and, in effect, our entire ocean ecosystem.”

Edward Norton Recruits Marathon Runners For Charity

Edward Norton has recruited 10 runners to take part in this year’s ING New York City Marathon on behalf of the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust.

The 10 runners have all committed to raising $6,000 each for the charity, and will join Norton for dinner before the race.

“The Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust is an organization I care about deeply,” says Norton. "I’ve been involved with the MWCT for over 10 years. In 2009, 29 other runners and I ran the New York Marathon to raise money for the MWCT and the campaign was a success…we raised over $1.2 million. The money we raise is used to protect the legendary ecosystems and astounding biodiversity of East Africa through conservation that directly benefits local Maasai communities.

Leonardo DiCaprio Wants Shark Fin Sales Banned In California

Leonardo DiCaprio has penned a letter to members of the California State Senate in support of Assembly Bill 376, which would prohibit the sale of shark fins in California.

“The International Union for the Conservation of Nature has concluded that a third of shark species are now threatened with extinction of some kind,” reads the letter, which has also been signed by the CEO of The Humane Society, the Executive Director of WildAid and the President of the Natural Resources Defense Council . “And recent estimates state that up to 73 million sharks are killed each year for use in shark fin soup and other products. Traditionally shark fin was affordable only to the elite, and consequently the issue of decimation of species was not a concern. But with the explosion of the world’s population, and an increasing number of wealthy consumers, this can no longer be considered true, as has been evidenced by the decimation of shark populations worldwide. Despite fisheries attempts at regulation, the inhumane practice of finning continues unabated too, as does the illegal capture of sharks from marine reserves and sovereign waters.”

The bill is an effort to save sharks and the oceans by banning the possession, sale, trade and distribution of shark fins in California. In addition to DiCaprio, AB 376 is supported by a host of prominent celebrities, including Edward Norton, Scarlett Johansson, Ke$ha, Kristen Bell, Paul Rudd and Chinese basketball great Yao Ming

Edward Norton Supports Bill To Stop Sale Of Shark Fins

California Assembly Members Paul Fong and Jared Huffman have introduced a bill to prohibit the sale of shark fins in California to the State Assembly, with the support of Edward Norton.

California is one of the largest sources of demand for shark fin outside Asia and this bill would represent a major step towards reducing pressure on shark populations. Furthermore the bill complements the ban introduced in both Hawaii and the Commonwealth of North Mariana Islands (CNMI) as well as restrictions established by the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT).

Join Ben Stiller At Help Haiti Charity Event

Ben Stiller is giving away two free tickets to the STILLERSTRONG Help Haiti Event he is hosting in NYC on Friday to the person who raises the most money by midnight tonight.

“Starting February 7th, the person who joins my team and raises the most money by February 9th at 11:59pm eastern will win 2 Free Tickets to the Help Haiti Event in NYC on Friday, February 11th,” Stiller has announced on his fundraising page on Edward Norton’s Crowdrise website. "I’m hosting the event which will honor Sean Penn’s relentless efforts to help Haiti. It will also raise money for our foundation and what we are doing in Haiti.

“Inspired by my first visit to Haiti in 2009, I started a unique fundraising campaign called Stillerstrong. Basically, the idea was to rip off Lance Armstrong’s wristband campaign for Livestrong, only do it with headbands. Our first campaign resulted in more than $300,000 raised to support the Save the Children School in Cévérine, Haiti. When the January 2010 earthquake hit, we expanded our commitment to Haiti with a broader effort to rebuild schools for children affected by the catastrophe. We launched the “Haitian School Initiative” in partnership with Architecture for Humanity – a non-profit organization that brings design, construction and development services to communities in need.

Yao Ming To Be Honored At WildAid Charity Gala

The first annual WildAid Charity Gala will take place in San Francisco in May, honoring celebrity NBA legend Yao Ming.

The event will celebrate the organization’s global conservation work, and will honor Ming for his help in reducing the consumption of shark fin soup in China.

The basketballer fronted a PSA campaign in China in 2010 to raise awareness of the fact that up to 70 million sharks are stripped of their fins and left to flounder on the sea bed every year to supply soup in the country.

Russell Brand Launches Campaign For Soldiers' Post-Traumatic Stress

British funnyman Russell Brand is using Edward Norton’s Crowdrise website to raise money for an initiative set up by David Lynch for soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress.

“Operation Warrior Wellness is a national wellness outreach to help 10,000 veterans overcome Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) through Transcendental Meditation,” writes Russell. "Staggering statistics from the Veterans Administration show that more soldiers are dying from the trauma of combat in Iraq and Afghanistan than at the hands of enemy combatants. Over 400,000 veterans have been diagnosed with PTSD since 2001, with 18 veterans committing suicide each day.

Barbra Streisand Pledges $5 Million To Charity

Barbra Streisand has joined Edward Norton’s Crowdrise online fundraising community to raise money for a US heart charity, and will match donations up to $5 million.

“The work of the Women’s Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is vital,” says the singer and actress. "Did you know that heart disease takes the lives of more women than all cancers combined? Can you imagine? I was so surprised when I learned this.

“The symptoms of a heart attack are often different in women than in men. But for decades, women have been treated for cardiovascular disease based on medical research done on men.

Ed Norton Asks President Obama To Step Up For Biodiversity

In an op-ed in The Guardian earlier this month, actor Edward Norton, a UN goodwill ambassador for biodiversity, laid out his concerns about the Earth’s biodiversity and the consequences of inaction – an unhappy future if plans are not designed now.

“Without collective action,” says Norton, “our ecosystems will approach tipping points, putting human lives and livelihoods, as well as such irreplaceable services as air and water purification, the renewal of soil fertility, and climate stabilization at risk of irreversible degradation and collapse.”

But with two key events this autumn, Norton sees the possibility for progress. The first event was held on September 22, when 192 UN member states met to discuss exclusively the biodiversity crisis. The second will take place in Japan in October when, he says, “193 parties to the convention on biological diversity will adopt a new strategic plan for 2011-2020, containing new targets for 2020 and a new biodiversity vision for 2050.”

Flea Launches Charity Fundraising Page On Crowdrise

Red Hot Chili Peppers bass player Flea has started a charity fundraising page on Edward Norton’s Crowdrise, and is offering a prize of a signed bass guitar to one lucky donator.

“I started the Silverlake Conservatory of Music along with a couple of my friends about 10 years ago (2001),” writes Flea. "Music has been my life for as long as I can remember. When I was in high school, I was in the orchestra, marching band and musical production band. Anything to keep myself involved.

“A few years back, I had the opportunity to visit my old high school and noticed how many of the music programs were cut from when I was there. There were barely any instruments left and the music room was essentially bare. I quickly realized that there was something I could do to help out and that’s when I started the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. The mission of the Conservatory is to facilitate basic music education for the youth of the community (ages 7-17) but all are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Kristen Bell Needs Your Help For Special Needs Animals

Actress Kristen Bell has launched a charity initiative that supports The Humane Society on an up-and-coming social networking fundraising site for youth.

The charity initiative project, called the “Special Needs” project, aims to rescue cats and dogs from extreme situations.

Kristen Bell started working with Special Needs animals five years ago. She was inspired to work for them following an experience while volunteering at the Helen Woodward Center, an animal shelter in California. At Woodward, Bell met a dog named Sadie. Sadie was in serious condition, missing most of her teeth and requiring ear surgery to reroute her ear canal to the side of her neck. Since meeting Sadie, Kristen made a vow to save animals like Sadie from harsh conditions and disasters.
