Bob Barker Says No To Stampede And Rodeo

Just days after speaking out against The Price Is Right’s recent promotion of the Calgary Stampede and Rodeo, iconic television host Bob Barker has fired off another letter on PETA’s behalf to the event’s main sponsors—including Bell Canada, General Motors of Canada Limited, Anheuser-Busch International, and TransAlta Corporation—to urge them to turn their backs on the notoriously violent and deadly rodeo.

In the letter, Barker points out that horses routinely die in the stampede—one had to be euthanized on the first day of last year’s spectacle, and six horses died in 2010’s event alone. Many more sustain painful injuries.

“The Calgary Stampede has long been synonymous with animal abuse,” writes Barker. “I hope you will agree that no animal deserves to suffer like this in the name of a tradition that should have died out with the covered wagon’s last ride. My friends at PETA and I hope to hear that you will no longer sponsor this event.”

PETA Honors Famous Vegetarians On Postage Stamps

A number of famous vegetarians are featuring on a limited edition sheet of US postage stamps launched by PETA.

According to PETA.org: “The VIPs featured on these unique postage sheets ditched meat from their diets either out of concern for their health, for the environment, or for animals—and our world would not be the same without their accomplishments. Although the individuals featured in this series seem very different at first glance, they are united in their respect for animals.”

Stars Help Launch Bill To End Cruelty In Circuses

Yesterday on Capitol Hill, renowned celebrity animal protectionists Bob Barker and Jorja Fox joined London-based Animal Defenders International (ADI), the Performing Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and members of Congress to launch a Bill that will change the way in which animals are used in the name of entertainment in the USA.

This historic launch comes at a crucial time as the UK Government considers the plight of wild animals currently languishing in circuses and follows the Commons debate in June where MPs voted overwhelmingly for a ban. ADI is calling on the Government to follow the lead of the U.S. Congress, and act once and for all to end the suffering.

Bob Barker Petitions For Spay-And-Neuter Law

After hearing that the Obama administration is launching a new website called We the People that will allow users to create their own petitions, which, when achieving 5,000 supporters, will be submitted to the administration for review, spay-and-neuter guru Bob Barker has teamed up with PETA to petition for a mandatory spay-and-neuter law.

The law would apply to all animals adopted from shelters or bought from pet stores, puppy mills, and breeders until the nation’s overpopulation crisis has abated and all the homeless dogs and cats in the U.S. have homes to call their own.

Barker, who never signs an autographed picture without including a spay-and-neuter message, such as “Control the Overpopulation Problem: Spay and Neuter Your Dogs and Cats,” has recorded an audio message on PETA.org, encouraging people to sign PETA’s petition. Bob Barker Rescues Chimpanzees

Television celebrity Bob Barker has come to the rescue of five chimpanzees in Texas who need a permanent home. Upon hearing about the plight of the chimpanzees left behind in a facility that has gone bankrupt, Barker made a contribution of $230,000 to Chimp Haven to begin building bedrooms and a habitat for them.

He is also underwriting the cost of their care for one year. Barker’s donation provides immediate relief for the Texas chimpanzees, and it launches Chimp Haven’s plan to expand its accommodations for non-government supported chimpanzees who need homes. Chimp Haven President, Dr. Linda Brent, says, “I hope Mr. Barker’s generous gesture will inspire others to follow his example so that we can complete this project and bring more chimpanzees to Chimp Haven.” The core construction to provide immediate refuge to the five chimpanzees is estimated to cost $170,000, but a minimum of an additional $200,000 is needed to complete the overall project.

“These chimpanzees have spent their entire lives on concrete in cages,” said Barker. “They will now be able to climb and swing and hoot through the forest-like surroundings of Chimp Haven. They are curious and smart and are expected to adapt well to their new surroundings.”

Longtime animal rights activist Bob Barker and his bunny friend Benny have a request for all compassionate consumers: Please stay away from products that have been tested on animals.

To honor the 25th anniversary of PETA’s Cruelty-Free Shopping Guide, the pair star in a brand-new video for PETA in which Barker urges shoppers to visit PETA.org for a list of cruelty-free companies.

In the past 25 years, PETA’s Cruelty-Free Shopping Guide list has grown from just three to more than 1,100 cosmetics and household-product companies that have banned animal testing. Although thousands of companies use only modern, non-animal methods to assess product safety, some companies—such as Clorox and L’Oréal—still drip chemicals into animals’ eyes and smear substances on their skins in archaic and painful experiments that are not required by law. As Barker explains in the video, “The animals suffer intensely. Some even go blind.” He emphasizes, “The price is never right on products tested on animals.”

Bob Barker Wants Jambbas Ranch Tours Stopped

TV legend and former The Price Is Right emcee Bob Barker has sent an urgent letter to members of the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners. Barker is urging officials to reverse a recent county ordinance amendment that makes it no longer illegal for Fayetteville-based Jambbas Ranch Tours to keep exotic and dangerous animals.

Currently, Jambbas confines a fox, a raccoon, an alligator, and a bear to small, barren enclosures that deprive the animals of everything that’s natural and important to them. The bear, Ben, shows telltale signs of extreme psychological distress—he constantly paces the small cage, paws at the ground, and bangs his head against the cage walls.

Before the amendment was adopted, the county ordinance had banned the keeping of exotic and dangerous animals within the county. Barker and PETA are calling on the commissioners to reverse the amendment, which was passed in haste at the request of the tawdry roadside zoo’s owner when he was faced with prosecution, and to enforce the original ordinance. This would allow for the fox, raccoon, and alligator to be relocated and for Ben the bear, who is being kept in solitary confinement, to finally be released to a sanctuary where he can receive expert care and live out his years in the company of other bears.

Celebrity Bob Barker made a $2 million charity donation to the Semper Fi Fund (SFF) yesterday to provide assistance to injured members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.

Barker, who was a fighter pilot during World War II, is hoping that his donation and support for young Veterans will inspire others to give and commit to making sure that not one young Marine, sailor, airman and soldier or their family members are in need during their long-term recoveries.

The cubs, two males and a female, now named Percy, Bob and Nancy will be part of a huge airlift of 25 rescued lions.

Bob is named after the famous Price is Right host Bob Barker and Nancy after Nancy Burnet, Director of United Activists for Animal Rights, who works closely with Mr. Barker. Bob Barker made a substantial donation to ADI which has enabled the organization to undertake a huge rescue operation in Bolivia, emptying all the circuses of animals following a national ban on the use of animals in travelling circuses.

Four lions, rescued by Animal Defenders International (ADI) from a Bolivian circus when the country banned the use of animals in circuses landed yesterday at San Francisco airport, before heading on to a life of luxury at the ARK 2000 sanctuary in Calaveras County.

ADI, which has previously rescued and relocated animals in Europe, South America and Africa have described it as one of the most complex logistical operation they have ever undertaken but say it will be worth all of the effort when the animals walk free.

CSI actress Jorja Fox, the ADI spokesperson for the operation, greeted the lions at San Francisco airport.

Former ‘The Price Is Right’ host Bob Barker has donated $2.5 million for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to open a new location in Los Angeles.

PETA President Ingrid Newkirk joined the ‘spay and neuter’ champion on Wednesday for the groundbreaking at what will become the new PETA office on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park. The building will be home to the group’s media, marketing, youth outreach and campaign departments.

Newkirk says Barker paid for an entire building to be renovated, which isn’t a surprise considering the tireless humanitarian hasn’t stopped promoting various animal rights issues such as freedom for whales, and an end to the fur trade, since he retired in 2008.

‘Price is Right’ host Bob Barker might have retired from TV, but he has not stopped campaigning on behalf of the animals. The legendary icon went home to Drury University to drop another major financial gift on his Alma matter, a check for $1 million!

Barker’s donation to Drury will go towards establishing the Dorothy Jo Barker Professorship in Animal Rights. Named for Barker’s late wife, the program will offer intense course study on animal issues like cruelty and philosophy.

“What we’re doing here today is something they’re going to be talking about all across the country” said Barker. “At the very least, the students who take this class will have more respect for animals.”

The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF) announced today that with the help of American TV icon Bob Barker, it has reached its goal of $60 million to complete its current project, the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), an advanced facility dedicated to research, diagnosis and treatment of traumatic brain injury (TBI) suffered by U.S. military personnel.

An animal rights charity has gathered support from a number of celebrities for its urgent call to end a cruel practice commonplace in the dairy industry.

On behalf of Kim Basinger, Alicia Silverstone, Bill Maher, Bob Barker and a host of other California celebrities – as well as their more than 200,000 members and supporters – Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, sent a letter today to Governor Schwarzenegger urging him to do the right thing and sign a bill sitting on his desk that would end the cruel and outdated practice of amputating dairy cows’ tails.

Both chambers of the California legislature recently passed a bill that would ban tail docking in the dairy industry, but the bill will not become law unless the governor signs it.

Pamela Anderson was in Florida on Saturday, March 14, to celebrate the 20th anniversary for the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida (ARFF) – an event hosted by Bob Barker – after writing an open letter to Florida governor Charlie Crist about ‘road-side zoos’ in the state, in which she says chimpanzees and other animals are kept in less-than-adequate enclosures.

“With so many frustrated great apes stewing in squalid facilities in Florida, it is only a matter of time before a similar tragedy strikes your state,” she wrote. “PETA and I appeal to you to take action to prevent Florida’s roadside zoos from keeping great apes and to ensure that these intelligent primates are transferred to approved sanctuaries to live out the remainder of their lives in suitable surroundings.”

Held at the Broward County Convention Center in Ft Lauderdale, the event featured delicious vegan food, entertainment, an awards ceremony, speeches, book signings, an open bar featuring organic Floridian wine and a silent auction that included items such as an “LA Confidential” poster signed by Kim Basinger and a jersey signed by Yao Ming.

Bob Barker Donates $1 Million To Animal Law Program

Legendary television host Bob Barker has donated $1 million to the University of Virginia to establish an animal law program.

“We are deeply grateful to Mr. Barker for his generous gift, which will enable us to expand our curricular and extracurricular offerings in this important and rapidly developing area of the law,” said UVA School of Law Dean Paul Mahoney. “There is definitely interest in animal law at the law school. I think whenever you have a high profile legal case, it influences student interests, and certainly the Michael Vick case has raised awareness of animal law issues.”

The money will help create a course in animal law – expected to start in the 2009-2010 school year – and fund guest speakers and a writing competition. The program will be headed by law professor Mimi Riley.
