On July 20th, 2011, famine was declared in southern regions of Somalia. The United Nations Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit predicted the famine would grow without increased humanitarian assistance.

At present, thirteen million people are dying of starvation in the Horn of Africa. Every week thousands of Somalis abandon their homes — many of them trudging for days under the blistering sun, toward refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya in pursuit of water and food.

Adam Lambert To Perform At GLAAD Awards

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) announced today that recording artist Adam Lambert will perform at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards Presented in Los Angeles on April 17, 2010 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.

Twenty-five years ago, a group of children made history by getting together to record their own version of We Are The World. On Friday, the original kids – including Drew Barrymore, Fergie and Alyssa Milano – will reunite for a special DVD/Blu-Ray release of the Children Of The World Project.

The original singers will come together at the Sheraton Delfina Hotel in Santa Monica for the taping to raise money once again for charity. Where the original proceeds went to Africa famine relief, the new recording will benefit kids in Haiti.

Nominated for a Grammy Award in 1985, the Children Of The World Project was the brainchild of Sonny Melendrez, and caught the attention of Michael Jackson, who penned the original song with Lionel Richie.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) has announced that Golden Globe Award-winning actress and producer Drew Barrymore will receive the Vanguard Award, and Emmy Award-winning actress and comedian Wanda Sykes will receive the Stephen F. Kolzak Award at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards on April 17 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.

The GLAAD Media Awards elevate and promote fair, accurate and inclusive stories of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues, people and allies that have increased awareness, understanding and respect for the lives of LGBT people. The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD’s work to bring stories of LGBT people and issues to Americans.

Actress Drew Barrymore will receive the Vanguard Award which is presented to media professionals who have increased the visibility and understanding of the LGBT community. In 2009, Barrymore took on the role of the lesbian daughter of a widower played by Robert De Niro in Everybody’s Fine, nominated for Outstanding Film – Wide Release at the 21st Annual GLAAD Media Awards, and in 1995 starred in Boys on the Side which won the Outstanding Film award at the 7th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. Stars Use Golden Globes For Charity

The stars were out at the Golden Globes in Hollywood this weekend, and many used the opportunity to raise awareness of the Haitian earthquake and ask fans to dig in their pockets and donate.

“I come to Golden Globes weekend and I am really, honestly conflicted — how to have my happy movie self in the face of everything I’m aware of in the real world,” said Meryl Streep, who picked up the Best Actress accolade for Julie and Julia. "And I want to say that’s when I have my mother’s voice coming to me, saying, ‘Shoot some money to Partners in Health, put the dress on, put on a smile and be damn grateful you have the dollars to help.’ "

The star also revealed that, when the dress comes off, it will go straight to a charity auction to raise money for victims of the disaster. Gerard Butler, Josh Brolin, Olivia Wilde and Any Poehler will also donate their Awards Night outfits to the auction – beginning on eBay on January 25.

Readers may have been surprised to learn that Paul Newman replaced Oprah Winfrey as the most generous celebrity of 2008. Oprah had occupied the number one spot by a wide margin for the first two years of the list.

Before his death, Newman made a donation of nearly $21 million to his self-named Newman’s Own Foundation. Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were second with a $13.5 million donation to the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, which distributed $6.4 million to charity, including a $2 million grant to The Global Health Committee for an Ethiopian clinic project, a $1 million grant to the Make it Right Foundation founded by Pitt, and $500,000 to the Armed Services YMCA USA.

On Friday, August 21, Little League Baseball will launch a very special online auction featuring over 40 balls signed by stars such as Zac Efron, Drew Barrymore, Billy Crystal, James Earl Jones, Charlie Sheen, Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Larry King, the Kardashian family (Kim, Khloe & Kourtney), James Denton and Milo Ventimiglia. George Clooney Makes Statement Against Imprisonment Of Nobel Prize Winner

George Clooney joined Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and many others on Friday in calling for the immediate release from prison of Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Along with Bono, Madonna, Steven Spielberg, Nobel Laureates professor Elie Wiesel and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, former US secretary of state Madeleine Albright and US Senator John McCain, the group released a statement protesting about the fact that Aung San Suu Kyi – who has been under house arrest for 19 years – has now been moved to a prison facility.

The only Nobel Peace Prize recipient currently imprisoned, and leader of the National League for Democracy in Burma, Suu Kyi is a noted prisoner of conscience and advocate of nonviolent resistance.

Slash Says No To Proposition 8

Former Guns ‘N’ Roses guitarist Slash has joined the fight against Proposition 8.

The musician has filmed a new video with his wife – Mrs Slash, AKA Perla Hudson – in which they urge people to protest against the decision that will ban same-sex marriages in California.

In the video, Slash plays the Star Spangled Banner on his guitar while Hudson says, “I married my sweetheart, you should be able to marry yours too. Say no to hate and yes to equal rights. Keep up the fight.”

Drew Barrymore joined thousands of protestors in West Hollywood over the weekend to march against Proposition 8, the controversial initiative to ban same-sex marriage in California.

“Thank you for allowing us be a part of this,” the 33-year said to protestors through a megaphone. “So many people that I love are being affected by this, people who have defined who I am. This cannot happen. We have to change this. This is so wrong. With all my heart, I could not feel more passionate about this.”

The actress is not alone in her opposition to Prop 8, with donations being made by Brad Pitt ($100,000), Steven Spielberg ($100,000), TR Knight ($50,000) David Geffen ($50,000), and Peter Wentz, and support from Barack Obama and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ellen DeGeneres, and Fall Out Boy.

Actress Jessica Alba has appeared in a new advertisement and public service announcement aimed at energizing young adults to register and vote in the 2008 US election.

The 27-year-old actress – who appears in the adverts naked and wrapped in black electrical tape – is part of the “Only You Can Silence Yourself” campaign being run by Declare Yourself, a non-profit organization initiated in 2004 to energize and empower a new movement of young voters.

“If you don’t register and vote and make a difference, and hopefully change the bad things that are happening in our country, you are essentially just binding and muzzling yourself,” she said. “I really don’t see the point in not registering to vote. We sign up for MySpace pages and Facebook pages, and download music off the internet. The least people can do is register to vote online, actually making a difference in their world, not just making their lives a little bit cooler. It makes more sense to spend your time making a change in society—and it actually doesn’t take that much time! It takes more time to make a music playlist than it does to register to vote.”

Viewers of Oprah Winfrey’s new show, Oprah’s Big Give, on Sunday night got a special surprise when Drew Barrymore announced she is donating $1 million to the United Nations World Food Program.

The 33-year-old actress has been an Ambassador Against Hunger for the organization since last year, and said that this is by far the biggest donation she has ever made, but “nothing has ever felt this good.”

“I have seen with my own eyes what a difference a simple cup of nutritious porridge can make in a child’s life,” said Barrymore. “It helps them learn, stay healthy, and sets them on track for a bright future. I urge everyone – everywhere – to help WFP ‘Fill the Cup’ for hungry children, and make hunger history.”

If you were to look on a map, you could be excused for missing Malawi completely. Bordered by Tanzania, Zambia, and Mozambique in South East Africa, the nation of Malawi is shaped like a lightning bolt, with much of its land area covered by a massive lake. But it a country that is in dire need of help, and a host of celebrities turned out to a dazzling evening of fun on Wednesday, February 6, to raise awareness for what is one of the poorest countries in the world.

The gala event was hosted by Madonna on the lawns of the United Nations Headquarters in New York, with the $3.7 million raised going to UNICEF and her own Raising Malawi organization. A long list of stars, including Gwyneth Paltrow, Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, Drew Barrymore, Jennifer Lopez, Tea Leoni, Lucy Liu, Billy Joel, Gwen Stefani, and Djimon Hounsou, attended the event, with tickets ranging from $2,500 to $10,000. The evening also featured performances by Alicia Keys, Timbaland, and Rihanna.

“I want to put Raising Malawi on the map,” said Madonna. “I want credibility as a philanthropic organisation. I want to inspire people. I don’t want them to just write me a cheque: I want them to give me a piece of their heart.”

Actress Drew Barrymore has been named an Ambassador Against Hunger for the World Food Programme. She and fellow WFP ambassador, world marathon record-holder Paul Tergat, will focus their advocacy efforts on school feeding programs. Tergat, hailing from Kenya, is a former school feeding recipient.

Barrymore points out that for just pennies a day a child can receive the nutrition necessary to boost enrollment, attendance and academic performance, leading to a brighter future for poor countries around the world.

“Feeding a child at school is such a simple thing – but it works miracles. I’ve seen it with my own eyes,” she said.

Barrymore Raises Funds For Food

Drew Barrymore recently travelled to Kenya in an effort to help some of the 11 million people in East Africa who are suffering from poverty and drought.

Photos the actress took while visiting the affected people of the area were sold in an auction that raised nearly $20,000 for the World Food Programme. One dollar will feed five hungry children for a day. Fellow filmstars Lucy Liu and Hugh Grant were among the winning bidders supporting the cause.

Barrymore has also designed a locket that will be sold through Marie Claire Magazine and on the internet. Some of the proceeds go to feed schoolchildren as a part of Marie Claire’s Shop For Charity World Hunger Campaign.
