Stars Flock To T-Shirt Launch For Invisible Children

GUESS and Vanity Fair Magazine unveiled special edition organic men’s T-shirts and women’s tank tops to benefit education and economic rebuilding in the war-ravaged African nation of Uganda last Thursday, October 21.

Held at the GUESS store in Beverly Hills, the event was hosted by Kristen Bell, Rachel Bilson and Peter Wentz and attracted stars such as AnnaLynne McCord, Ben McKenzie, Eliza Dushku, Rick Foxx, Chris Lowell, Shenae Grimes, Stephanie Jacobsen, Jeff Probst and many others.

The shirts are now available for purchase in all U.S. Guess stores and online at Guess.com. 100% of the proceeds from shirt sales will benefit Invisible Children, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting youth education and economic development in war-torn regions of Central East Africa.

Invisible Children was created by Jason Russell, Laren Poole and Bobby Bailey – who also attended Thursday’s event – after the release of their 2004 film “Invisible Children: Rough Cut,” a revealing documentary about the child soldiers of Northern Uganda. GUESS first partnered with the organization back in October 2006, when the daughters of Maurice Marciano, Olivia, 16 and Caroline, 18, were inspired to become involved in the noteworthy cause after seeing the filmmakers on the Oprah Winfrey Show.

This star-studded event will take place at the GUESS Rodeo Drive flagship store in Beverly Hills on Thursday, October 22, from 7:00–9:00 p.m. The event will be hosted by young Hollywood’s leading ladies, Kristen Bell and Rachel Bilson, with musical guest Peter Wentz accompanied by DJ White Shadow.

Three years ago, Caroline and Olivia Marciano—daughters of Maurice Marciano, Chairman of the Board and Co-founder of GUESS—approached their father about wanting to make a difference by supporting Invisible Children. Their father told them, “I will help you, but it has to be your project.” Three years later, GUESS is thrilled to unveil organic men’s T-shirts and women’s tank tops whose entire proceeds will go to benefit Invisible Children. Both shirts will be manufactured by EDUN LIVE out of Uganda from 100% percent certified organic cotton, and will support sustainable socioeconomic development in that country.

Celebrities Sign Letter To Stop Tail Docking

An animal rights charity has gathered support from a number of celebrities for its urgent call to end a cruel practice commonplace in the dairy industry.

On behalf of Kim Basinger, Alicia Silverstone, Bill Maher, Bob Barker and a host of other California celebrities – as well as their more than 200,000 members and supporters – Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, sent a letter today to Governor Schwarzenegger urging him to do the right thing and sign a bill sitting on his desk that would end the cruel and outdated practice of amputating dairy cows’ tails.

Both chambers of the California legislature recently passed a bill that would ban tail docking in the dairy industry, but the bill will not become law unless the governor signs it.

Tail docking, the amputation of a cow’s tail by applying a tight rubber ring around the appendage until the tissue becomes necrotic and falls off, or is alternatively cut off with shears, is a procedure usually performed without analgesics and causes the animal to suffer acute and lingering pain. It also prohibits them from warding off biting insects with their tail, leading to greater distress during fly season. Peer-reviewed research from both governmental and academic sources indicates there are no health or safety benefits associated with tail docking, and the procedure has been opposed by numerous professional associations such as the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.

“With last November’s landslide passage of Prop 2, banning the three cruelest farm animal confinement systems in the state, Californians made it clear they will no longer tolerate cruel and unnecessary practices on factory farms,” said Gene Baur, Farm Sanctuary’s president and co-founder. “By putting an end to tail docking, Governor Schwarzenegger has the opportunity to continue this wave of compassion and send a humane message to the rest of the country.”

Susan Sarandon To Be Honored By Somaly Mam Foundation

The Somaly Mam Foundation (SMF), dedicated to ending slavery around the world, is pleased to announce two benefit events marking their second year in both New York and Los Angeles.

In New York City, the 2nd annual An Evening of Hopes and Dreams dinner will be held on Thursday, September 17, 2009 at 583 Park Avenue. Pete Wentz Comes To The Rescue

Fall Out Boy’s Peter Wentz played a special gig in Washington DC on Saturday, April 25, to raise money and awareness of Invisible Children, and blogged in the Huffington Post about why the cause is so close to his heart.

“Invisible Children is staging an event called the RESCUE, in 100 cities across 10 countries worldwide. Thousands of people are going to symbolically ‘abduct’ themselves and stand in solidarity with all the abducted children forced to fight as soldiers,” he wrote before the gig. "In turn, every group will be ‘rescued’ by a celebrity, politician, local luminary — someone who will make noise and bring the media out. I will be there, in Washington, D.C. standing in solidarity with thousands of other people so that these kids in Uganda will be noticed. And if no cultural leader shows up in one particular city, then everyone in the surrounding cites that were rescued, will take a bus to join them. This will continue until every participating city is rescued. Now, this could take days, or even weeks, but it’s going to happen.

Invisible Children is an organization that draws attention to the issue of kidnapped child fighters in Uganda and the Congo.

“They’re a movement of people who literally gave up everything because they believed in humanity. They put their money where their mouth is. I watched the film Invisible Children: Rough Cut a while back, about kids sleeping in the streets in Northern Uganda — hundreds of them — because they feared being abducted by rebel leader Joseph Kony and forced to fight in his rebel militia, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). They’re kids. Except no one told them they were, so they carry AK-47s, kill their parents and murder, rape and terrorize their own people on command. In the past two decades, 30,000 of them have been abducted. This is a reality neither you nor I could ever begin to understand. It was one of those times in my life where I was given a choice — continue ignoring the issue because it wasn’t in front of me, or forget about myself and do something.”

A host of celebrities will attend tonight’s (April 24) “An Evening Of Women: Celebrating Art, Music and Equality” at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Presented by the LA Gay and Lesbian Center, the annual event is widely regarded as one of the premier events for women in California and the nation. According to the Center, “It continues to fulfill the purpose of its founder by inspiring women to participate in civil rights and social service causes, by showcasing the accomplishments of women leaders.”

The evening will feature performances by Christina Aguilera and Linda Perry, and a live auction hosted by Sharon Stone that includes items donated by Bette Midler, Pink, Gwen Stefani and Alicia Keys. Cybill Shepherd, Sarah Silverman, DJ Samantha Ronson, Eliza Dushku, Rosario Dawson, Leisha Hailey, Clementine Ford, Perez Hilton and many others are also expected to attend. The host committee includes Cher, Kristen Bell Eric Dane, Jared Leto, Alicia Silverstone, Ben Silverman, Slash and many more. Past presenters have included Kathy Bates, Ellen DeGeneres, Gillian Anderson, Stockard Channing, Lily Tomlin, Melissa Etheridge.

Stars Call On Their Heroes To Join Rally

Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden has joined a video campaign organized by the Invisible Children organization to raise awareness of The Rescue, a global rally that takes place on 25 April.

The campaign allows people to upload videos to YouTube and call on their role models to take part in the rally, which aims at drawing attention to the issue of kidnapped child fighters in Uganda and the Congo.

“Of all the people that I could think of, I thought Emile Hirsch,” said Madden in his video. “He actually really cares about Africa. He means it.”

Madden joins a host of stars who are lending their support to the rally, which will feature events in over 100 cities around the world. Kirsten Dunst and Kristen Bell are both due to appear in events in LA, while Ryan Gosling will appear in New York and Peter Wentz is due to take part in Washington DC.

Stars Team Up To Fight Alzheimer's

In an amazing display of dedication and support, hundreds of celebrities, businesspersons, sports figures, and entertainment-industry leaders came together for “A Night at Sardi’s,” the annual star-studded benefit for the Alzheimer’s Association.

Held at the Beverly Hilton, the much-anticipated March 4 event raised nearly $1 million for Alzheimer’s care and research. In 17 years, A Night at Sardi’s has raised nearly $18 million for the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

Comedian and author Chelsea Handler hosted the evening, which, in addition to cocktails and dinner, included red carpet arrivals, awards presentations and a research update. It culminated in a concert version of the musical “Damn Yankees” performed by some of the industry’s most recognizable talents, including Kristen Bell, Sean Hayes, Melina Kanakaredes, Katey Sagal, Victor Garber, Peter Gallagher, Kathryn Gallagher, Ken Howard, Sharon Lawrence, Vicki Lewis, Ron Fassler and Larry Raben.

Actor JK Simmons led cast members from CBS’s “Big Bang Theory” in a rousing rendition of the show’s finale, “You’ve Gotta Have Heart.”

FOX Sports received the Advocacy Award for its public service campaign and support of the Alzheimer’s Association. Sportscaster and former NFL Star Charles Davis presented the award to David Hill, Chairman & CEO of FOX Sports Television Group, Ed Goren, President of FOX Sports and Bill Wanger, SVP of Programming & Research, FOX Sports.

Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton, Aimee Teegarden and fellow cast members of “Friday Night Lights” presented the gala’s Abe Burrows Entertainment Award to the show’s executive producer Jason Katims. The NBC drama was honored for depicting the effects of Alzheimer’s disease on its characters. The award is named for the late playwright and director, who died of Alzheimer’s.

Swoosie Kurtz presented Caregiver of the Year honors to Serge Morales of Agoura Hills, whose wife, Susan Franklin Morales, was diagnosed with young onset Alzheimer’s two years ago at age 55.

Many other entertainment luminaries came to support the cause and raise awareness, including Bradley Cooper, Dennis Quaid, Molly Sims, Billy Crystal, Soleil Moon Frye, Rachel York, Ron Rifkin, Gina Philips, Shelley Fabares and Mike Farrell.

Event co-chairs were Laurie Burrows Grad and Peter Grad. Ms. Grad created this event to honor her father, the late playwright/director Abe Burrows.

This gala is important because it raises funds for Alzheimer’s disease care and research. More than 5 million people in the U.S. have Alzheimer’s and that number is expected to grow as the population ages and the Baby Boom generation turns age 65. The Alzheimer’s Association is the global leader in Alzheimer care, support and research.

Actress Kristen Bell was one of the many stars to attend the 17th annual Alzheimer’s Association A Night At Sardi’s event in Beverly Hills on Wednesday, March 4.

Held at the Beverly Hills Hotel, the event attracted stars such as Jason Alexander, Vanessa Williams, Dick Van Dyke, Michelle Pfeiffer, P. Diddy, Greg Kinnear, Zachary Levi, Michael Chiklis and William Shatner, and honored the producers of Fox Sports and the TV show “Friday Night Lights”.

The charity event is one of the biggest annual fundraisers for the Alzheimer’s Association, garnering over $17 million since it was first held.

The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer care, support and research. Their mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Actress Kristen Bell will meet and greet her fans for charity this weekend.

The 28-year-old Heroes star – who is well known for her support of animal welfare charities and is also a member of the Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet – will be at frozen yogurt giant Red Mango’s 1-year anniversary in Los Angeles on Saturday, August 2. The actress will be signing autographs at the store on Weyburn Avenue from 1-3pm, and the store will be donating all of its proceeds for the day to Invisible Children, a charity that aims to create awareness regarding the plight of the people of northern Uganda by educating and inspiring individuals to use their voices for change.

Motivated by the unseen war in Northern Uganda, Invisible Children was created by three young filmmakers with a singular mission: To use the power of stories to change lives around the world. The charity has garnered support from bands such as Fall Out Boy and Paramore, and the original founders created a video to raise awareness of the tragic realities of Northern Uganda’s child soldiers.

Heather Mills is giving hope to animal-lovers everywhere by returning to host this year’s Farm Sanctuary Gala on May 17th, with emcee Melissa Rivers.

Heather and Melissa will be joined by many caring people and well-known celebrities, such as Kristen Bell and Kevin Nealon, who share their dream of bringing public awareness and compassion to the safety of farm animals. This will be a night to remember, full of exquisite vegan cuisine and sensational entertainment provided by Shawn Colvin.

Gift bags featuring vegan foods, cruelty-free items and other unique farm animal-related gifts are to be given out at the event to educate Gala guests about compassionate living, and an auction featuring original paintings, photography, gift baskets, jewelry and more will help to raise funds for the charity.

Guests set to attend this black tie event include Rachel Leigh Cook, Jennifer Coolidge, Emily Deschanel, Christine Ebersole, Lisa Edelstein, Susie Essman, Corey Feldman, Richard Kind, Swoosie Kurtz, Vanessa Marcil, Peter Max, Esai Morales, Eric Roberts, Ally Sheedy, Hal Sparks, Loretta Swit, True Whitaker, Persia White, Debra Wilson Skelton and more.

Red Cross Announces The 2008 Celebrity Cabinet

The American Red Cross unveiled their 7th annual National Celebrity Cabinet yesterday, February 28, with 15 new members from movies, sports, and television.

Skateboard legend Tony Hawk will join former Beverly Hills 90210 and Dancing With The Stars alum Jennie Garth, Heroes’ Masi Oka, Gossip Girl’s Penn Badgley, House M.D.’s Lisa Edelstein and Kal Penn, Ugly Betty’s Ana Ortiz, Grey’s Anatomy’s Sara Ramirez, Scrubs’ Judy Reyes, Everyone Loves Raymond’s Patricia Heaton, Hairspray’s Brittany Snow, two-time NASCAR champion Greg Biffle, New York Yankee Robinson Cano, NFL star Matt Leinart, and Life Coach Iyanla Vazant in the 2008 Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet, part of a mobilizing force to urge people to perform extraordinary life-saving acts in dire circumstances through the assistance of the Red Cross.

“I am extremely honored to participate in the Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet, especially at a time when we have the ability to do so much for people around the world who have endured such tragedies,” said new member Jennie Garth. “The Red Cross brings help and hope to those in need and has done tremendous good for so many different people on a global level. I believe this is a time when we can educate others and the Red Cross allows for the opportunity for each individual to contribute to the effort. I am grateful that I am able be part of this amazing organization.”

The 47 members of the 2008 National Celebrity Cabinet will be “on-call” to donate their time, skills, passion, and energy to help the Red Cross highlight their important initiatives and response efforts. It will be chaired once again by Sherry Lansing, former CEO of Paramount Pictures and member of the Red Cross Board of Govenors.

“This is my sixth year serving as chair for the Celebrity Cabinet,” she said. “It’s an honor to be a part of such a meaningful cause with such talented people.”

The Red Cross has benefited from the involvement of public figures and celebrities since World War I, and over the years actors and artists have played an important role in raising public awareness of Red Cross services nationwide. Cabinet members pledge their support for a one year term, although many members of the current National Celebrity Cabinet, including Heidi Klum and Leeza Gibbons, have been involved for over five years.

“The Red Cross is a volunteer driven organization that provides humanitarian help to those in need,” said Klum. “It is an honor for me to participate in their celebrity cabinet and encourage all individuals to become involved with their local Red Cross.”

Members of the 2008 National Celebrity Cabinet will be involved in one of the country’s largest volunteer networks and will promote awareness of Red Cross services by participating in public service advertisements, as well as donating their time, money and blood, aiding in disaster relief, and lending a helping hand to those in need. Returning members include Jackie Chan, Sara Evans (who recently organized an auction as part of her involvement), Jamie Lee Curtis, Patti LaBelle, Jimmy Smits, Marlee Matlin, Nancy O’Dell, Jane Seymour, Peyton Manning, Jimmie Johnson, Rascal Flatts, Julianne Moore, George Foreman, Marcia Gay Harden, Elisabeth Rohm, Eli Manning, Daddy Yankee, Chayanne, Aisha Tyler, Pierce Brosnan, Amy Grant, Miley Ray Cyrus, Kristen Bell, Pat Green, Dwayne Johnson (AKA The Rock), Dr. Phil McGraw, Raven Symone, Niki Taylor, Burney Lamar, and Bradley Whitford.

The American Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet was developed in 2002 as part of the Entertainment Outreach Program.
