Spike Lee To Be Honored At Charity Auction

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will present the 20th Anniversary Mickey Mantle Community Service Award to director and actor Spike Lee at an annual sports and entertainment fantasy auction benefiting Camp Brooklyn on December 9th.

Camp Brooklyn was founded by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz to give children from low-income homes an opportunity to attend a sleep-away camp no cost to the camper. The Camp Brooklyn Fund gives these children a chance to leave their urban environment and learn about teamwork, loyalty, wholesome health habits, responsibility, personal respect and appreciation for nature, all of which are a part of a child¹s education at summer camp.

Since 2002 Camp Brooklyn sent more than 1500 Brooklyn children to summer camp. To help raise funds – - and send over 400 children to camp in 2010 – - Camp Brooklyn will auction off a number of unique and exclusive items at the event, including:

A walk-on role In Spike Lee¹s next movie
A Bruce Springsteen signed acoustic guitar
A week-long stay along the Amalfi Coast in Italy with breakfast and gourmet dinners in a sea view room at the 4-star rated Hotel Bonadies
4 or 5 day Carnival Cruise, sailing from the Port of New York
An Alex Rodriguez #13 autographed New York Yankees pinstripe jersey

In addition to the above, a vacation package with Carnival Cruise Lines, VIP seats to the Late Show with David Letterman, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, getaways to Orlando, Salt Lake and Las Vegas and over 50 other items will also be auctioned.

The week leading up to the event, Camp Brooklyn will also host several items on-line at www.charitybuzz.com. This on-line auction will begin on Tuesday, December 1st and close at noon on December 9th. All on-line items will then be available for bidding at the event.

Celebrities Flock To Charity Billiards Tournament

New York Giant and Super Bowl Champion defensive end Justin Tuck hosted the first ever Tuck’s Celebrity Billiards Tournament in New York on Monday, July 13.

The event attracted a host of stars from music, film and sports, including John Legend, Kelly Rowland, Spike Lee, Vivica Fox, Anthony Anderson and many more.

The star-studded tournament raised $140,000 for Tuck’s R.U.S.H. for Literacy, a charity initiative founded by Justin Tuck in 2008 to encourage children to READ, UNDERSTAND, SUCCEED, and HOPE as they continue to nurture literacy in their lives. This charity program is committed to raise funds to donate books and other reading materials to benefit the local New York and Central Alabama communities.

Michael Jordan Golf Invitational Set For This Month

The eighth Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational (MJCI) will be held this year at the luxurious Ocean Club Golf Course from Wednesday, January 21, to Sunday, January 25, on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

MJCI consistently brings in an incredible array of talent from the worlds of sports and entertainment to compete on the course and participate in various events – all in the name of charity.

“I love golf and I love the Bahamas, I can’t think of a better location than the Ocean Club Golf Course and Atlantis, Paradise Island for my eighth annual golf tournament,” said Michael Jordan. “January is the best time of the year to be in the Bahamas. Forty additional charities will be designated by celebrity participants.

In its first six years, over $3 million has been donated to various charities.

In 2008 the golfers competed for a purse of $200,000 that was donated to the charity of their choice.

One of the highlights last year was a concert at Atlantis featuring Ashanti, Fat Joe, The Pussycat Dolls, and the O.J.s. Some of the other stars in attendance were Spike Lee, Kid Rock, Boris Kodjoe, Alan Thicke, Stephen Baldwin, John McEnroe, Stone Phillips, Mario Lemieux, Dave Annable, Flex Alexander, Angie Everhart, Dan Jensen, Brandie Chastain, Dennis Haysbert, Connie Chung and Maury Povich.

Rihanna To Play Inauguration Show For The Hungry

Pop star Rihanna is set to perform at Barack Obama's inauguration to benefit hunger relief.

The 20-year-old has been confirmed to sing at the Recording Industry Association of America’s Presidential Inauguration Charity Ball in aid of Feeding America.

“We could not be happier that Rihanna will be performing at the Inauguration charity ball to benefit Feeding America,” Vicki Escarra, president and CEO of Feeding America (formerly America’s Second Harvest), told people.com. “Rihanna’s involvement will help raise awareness about the prevalence of hunger in America and help bring more aid to the 36 million Americans who do not always know where they will find their next meal.”

The concert will take place in Washington DC, and will also feature Aretha Franklin. Look To The Stars will give you more info about tickets when it comes to hand.

Also taking place on inauguration night – January 20 – is a charity concert benefiting the Creative Coalition, a nonprofit public charity organized by the creative community to learn about pressing issues so they can better inform and influence the community and nation. Performing at the sold-out event are Elvis Costello and Sting, with appearances from Seal, Ashley Judd, Anne Hathaway, Susan Sarandon, Marcia Cross, and film director Spike Lee.

Cindy Crawford And Spike Lee Honored

A model and a director were honored at two different charity events for their humanitarian work this week.

Supermodel Cindy Crawford was the honoree of the 10th annual Rick Weiss Humanitarian Awards in Palm Springs, California, earlier this week – an event that raised money for local charities such as Project New Hope, The Desert AIDS Project, the AIDS Assistance Program, the American Heart Association, Guides Dogs of the Desert, and the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center.

Crawford was presented with the award by Daisy Fuentes, and spoke of her brother’s death from leukemia at the age of four and her mother’s efforts to raise funds for research into the disease.

“It inspired me by showing me that everyone can do something and make a difference,” said the 42-year-old.

Over in Los Angeles, film director Spike Lee was the recipient of the sixth annual Behind The Lens Award, and spoke on the involvement of African-Americans in the film industry – both behind-the-scenes and in front of the cameras.

The evening included appearances by Laurence Fishburne, Bill Duke, Damon Wayans, and Snoop Dogg, and celebrated the outstanding achievements of African-Americans in film.

“We’ve got a long way to go to catch up to where we are in sports and music,” said the 51-year-old director of Do The Right Thing and Malcom X.

The event was organized by the Chrysler Foundation, who also donated $25,000 to Lee’s old college in Atlanta – Morehouse College – in recognition of his work. The money will go towards a program to expand the college’s School of Sports Journalism for African-Americans.

“Spike Lee epitomizes the ideal of the Behind the Lens Award,” said Frank Fountain, Senior Vice President of External Affairs and Public Policy at Chrysler. “His thoughtful films and activism in Hollywood have inspired a generation of filmmakers, encouraged actors, challenged basic assumptions and expanded the field to include many more African-Americans in key roles behind the lens. We are thrilled to have him as the awards latest honoree and to celebrate his commitment and passion.”

Keys, Lee Help Keep Children Alive

A group of dedicated charity workers teamed up with Spike Lee and Alicia Keys to help save children in Africa through an auction of modern technology and celebrity glamour.

Determined representatives of Keep A Child Alive were the first in line at Apple’s SoHo store in New York in order to purchase the first highly anticipated iPhone. They arrived at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26 and maintained their prized place by sharing shifts over the four days of waiting. Director Spike Lee personally purchased the first phone on behalf of the charity when they went on sale Friday, June 29th.

The organisation, which gets anti-retroviral treatment to children infected with AIDS in Africa, then offered the iPhone to the highest bidder, along with two Jawbone Bluetooth headsets, two round-trip domestic airline tickets, and two VIP passes to the “Black Ball” charity concert in New York. Keep A Child Alive Ambassador Alicia Keys will leave a personalized voice mail greeting on the phone, and will present it to the winner at the ball honoring Bono this October.

The winning bid at the auction, which ended July 6th, raised $100,000, and 100% of the proceeds go to the organization. Elizabeth Santiso of Keep A Child Alive commented, “We’re thrilled, this iPhone is saving thousands of lives in Africa. We’re so grateful to all of the people who contributed their time, money and energy on behalf of the cause.”

Hill, McGraw and More Become Cartier LOVECHARITY Ambassadors

Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Djimon Hounsou, and Eva Mendes are among the list of 2007 Cartier LOVECHARITY Bracelet Ambassadors.

The Cartier LOVE bracelet was introduced more than 30 years ago, and has risen to be one of the most coveted jewelry designs in the world. In 2006 alone, more than $1.2 million was donated to eight global charities from the sales of its LOVECHARITY bracelet, spurring the company to create a new LOVECHARITY bracelet for 2007. The goal is to exceed last year’s donations as a number of new celebrities join the endeavor.

The 2007 LOVECHARITY bracelet features an 18K white gold miniature LOVE bracelet graced with the word LOVE and accented with two signature screw motifs. It is set into a knotted silk cord available in various colors, with each cord designating support of a unique cause. The bracelet costs $475 with $100 per bracelet benefiting its corresponding charity.
