Emma Roberts To Attend Charity Fun Run

Actress and singer Emma Roberts will be at the Children’s Cancer Research Fund’s Kids 4 Kids Run/Walk this Sunday, April 26, in Los Angeles.

“I am so honored to be an ambassador for the 4th year in a row, for the CCRF’s Annual Run/Walk,“ she said. “It has become an important tradition for me and I look forward to seeing all the great kids. I hope you can join us for this terrific day.”

According to the charity: "The event evolved from important changes seen over the years in children’s awareness of cancer and the incredible generosity from kids of all ages wanting to help kids with cancer.“

“Countless times we’ve experienced amazing examples of hope and determination in children whether they were patients battling cancer or determined children who emptied their own piggybanks to make a donation to our organization,” said Matti Contopulos, founder of the charity.

People of all ages can take part in the 5 km run/walk, and participants will have the chance to mingle with stars such Emma Roberts, Brandi Chastain [Olympic Soccer star], Jordan Farmar [L.A. Lakers], Luc Robitaille [L.A. Kings], Jennette McCurdy [iCarly], Matthew Underwood [Zoey 101] and many others. A map of the route can be found here.

Registration is only $10 for those under 18 years old, and $25 for everybody else. And all participants will have the chance to win some great prizes: raise $40 in sponsorship, and you will receive a Kids 4 Kids RUN/WALK 2009 Mascot Bear AND a matching Mascot Bear will be delivered to a child in the hospital. If you raise over $1000 in sponsorship, you get an 8GB iPod; raise over $5000 and you will receive a Samsung 50“ TV.

Founded in 1987 by Contopulos, the Children’s Cancer Research Fund (CCRF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to two important goals: to provide support on a national level for clinical research in pediatric cancer and to improve the medical environment for all children.

LTTS Exclusive: Shane's Inspiration Shooting Stars Gala

Look To The Stars’ lead host Michele Vink attended the star-studded Shane’s Inspiration gala in LA on Saturday, and met one of the children who benefit from the charity’s efforts.

“I will sing for everybody in the world….Once I see some people. I will walk on stage on my legs!” His brand new robot legs to be exact.

These are the words of the brave young Spencer that I interviewed briefly before he prepared for his musical performance. Tonight he would be singing with some of his other friends from Shane’s Club Children’s Choir. I asked him for a preview of the song from the musical, Wicked, that they were to perform later that night but was denied so I would pay special attention for his important stage entrance.

“When I was first born I had bending legs. I was walking on them until I felt so much pain. I didn’t want to want to get the pain anymore. So… I cut my legs off. I went to Shriners Hospitals for Children and got surgery. I got two shots and I didn’t scream or nothing… they cut off both of my legs and I got the new robot legs.”

It is amazing children just like Spencer that were the focus of the 2009 Gala for Shane’s Inspiration at The Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. Guests like Derek Strong, former NBA player and now racecar driver, came out to support this great event and help raise funds for playgrounds and programs that will impact the lives of all children. The Gala Committee includes such stars as Dakota Fanning, Elle Fanning, Emma Roberts, Steve Valentine, Laura Sangiacomo and Julia Roberts. Joe Mantegna’s own daughter has autism and he felt it was an honor for him to be the Master of Ceremony of this annual event tonight.

The mission of Shane’s Inspiration is to “create Universally Accessible Playground and programs that integrate children of all abilities socially, physically and emotionally fostering acceptance, friendship and understanding.” Not only do they make an impact with these new playgrounds, but they also offer free programs including field trips, play clubs and educational programs that reach over 5,000 children a year throughout Southern California.

Imagine taking someone like Spencer to the playground to meet up with his friends and not being able to interact with the other children because they are limited to only a few pieces of equipment on the playground. This creates an immediate obstacle in the benefits of play, keeping the children with disabilities segregated from their peer groups and social circles. By creating these Universally Accessible Playgrounds, it also allows the “typically-able” children the necessary opportunity to interact with children with disabilities. They learn to accept and interact with children that may be different than them and “eliminate bias against children with disabilities.”

So the next time a child like Spencer wants to walk on stage to “sing for everybody in the world”, the world will see his abilities, not his disabilities. If it takes a village to move a mountain, how hard could it be to build a few playgrounds?

Teen Power At Charity Gala

A host of Hollywood’s most exciting and energetic teenage stars attended the ‘Target Presents Variety’s Power of Youth’ event held at the Nokia Theatre in L.A. on Saturday night.

The event celebrated the activism of the young Hollywood community with an afternoon full of performances and activities for patients and families of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and “produced an opportunity to harness the enthusiasm and activism of the young Hollywood community in a focused effort to encourage their peers and audiences to get involved in philanthropic and humanitarian causes.” Making an appearance at the gathering were the Jonas Brothers, Hilary Duff, Miranda Cosgrove, Miley Ray Cyrus, Dakota Fanning, Selena Gomez, Angus T. Jones, Demi Lovato, Corbin Bleu, Elle Fanning, Eliza Dushku, Olivia Thirlby, Ashley Tisdale and Emma Roberts.

“Target Presents Variety’s Power of Youth campaign is a powerful one; one that harnesses the energy of more than 150 young performers who are in a position to influence their peers and fans,” said Brian Gott, associate publisher of Variety. “With the support of Target and our other sponsors, the Power of Youth effort has the opportunity to generate millions of dollars to benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and create a bedrock of social awareness within the next generation of entertainment.”

As part of the celebration, a public online auction is running to raise funds for St. Jude, the nation’s leading children’s cancer research and treatment hospital, and the only one that covers all of the costs for medicine, treatment, food, travel and lodging. It features items and once-in-a-lifetime opportunities such as a guitar signed by the Jonas Brothers, the chance to interview Coldplay, a walk-on role on Weeds, and many more awesome lots.

Ryan Sheckler Offers Range Rover To Best Fund Raiser

MTV’s Ryan Sheckler is offering his Range Rover to the person who can raise the most money for cancer research. The Life of Ryan star has partnered his Sheckler Foundation with the Children’s Cancer Research Fund, and will personally hand over the keys to the most successful fund-raiser at the charity’s 2008 Kids4Kids 5K Run/Walk.

Sheckler is part of the National Spokesperson Team for the event, joining Brandi Chastain, Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki, Luc Robitaille and Emma Roberts. The event is set to take place in Los Angeles on April 27, with Race Day registration beginning at 8 AM and the official start at 10 AM.

Also participating in the event as part of the All Star Team are Tate Donovan, Olivia Wilde, Vanessa Lengies and Constance Marie. The team is completed by a host of young stars from film and television, including Madisen Beaty, Lauren Clinton and Denzel Whitaker.

Participants can win prizes ranging from a Kids 4 Kids RUN/WALK 2008 Mascot Bear – one bear is donated to a child in the hospital for every bear given to a participant – to the grand prize of a MacBook (laptop) and a 8GB iPod nano. People wishing to support the cause, but not take part in the Run/Walk, can sponsor the family of a cancer patient, helping them to enjoy a fun day out together.
