GLAAD Announces Media Award Nominees

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the nation’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy and anti-defamation organization, has announced the nominees for its 23rd Annual GLAAD Media Awards. By recognizing and honoring media for outstanding images of the LGBT community, the GLAAD Media Awards serve as a benchmark for the media industry and complement GLAAD’s work to bring LGBT images and stories to Americans.

Among the nominees: Beginners, starring Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor, Albert Nobbs, starring Glenn Close and Janet McTeer, J. Edgar, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Armie Hammer, Showtime’s hit shows Shameless and The Big C, Glee, Modern Family, CBS ratings leader NCIS, Becoming Chaz, the AIDS documentary We Were Here, Dancing with the Stars with Carson Kressley and Chaz Bono, the wedding of a gay staffer on Conan, David Letterman’s interview with Chaz Bono, CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360, TheRoot.com’s “Black and Transgender: A Double Burden,” and Lady Gaga for her Born This Way album.

Spanish-language nominees include Ricky Martin for his album Música + Alma + Sexo, telenovelas Las Aparicio, Los Exitosos Gome$, and El Último Matrimonio Feliz, news programs Noticiero con Paola Rojas and Despierta América, and ESPN Deportes’ SportsCenter.

Celebrity Charity Event Raises $460,000 For Point Foundation

Point Foundation (Point), the nation’s largest scholarship granting organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students of merit, today announced that it raised over $460,000 at its annual Point Honors – New York fundraising gala held at Capitale in New York on April 4, hosted by Kelly Ripa and Sam Champion.

The contributions came from corporate sponsorships, table and ticket sales, as well as items sold during the live auction. An additional $100,000 donation was given to support a Point Named Scholarship.

Iman and Isaac Mizrahi presented the Point Courage Award to Bravo’s Andy Cohen, which recognizes an individual who has advocated for the future of the LGBT community and lives with the vision that investing in today’s potential will produce a brighter tomorrow. Cohen, who thanked his mother for her continued encouragement and support, said, “It is the Point scholars who are the real courageous ones.”

Isabella Rossellini Hopes To Inspire Italy

Isabella Rossellini is hoping that her Italian narration for Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s documentary Home will encourage people to look after the planet.

The French filmmaker shot the film from the sky, giving a unique view of the Earth and showing the impact humans are having on it.

“I knew of his work for a long time so I said yes without hesitation, so I could get to know him,” said Rossellini at the Santa Barbara Film Festival. "He’s somebody that I’ve admired for 20 years.

Stars Come To The Rescue For Animals With Concert And Calendar

A host of stars will come to the rescue of animals in need at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, California, tonight, January 7.

The Animal Rescue Foundation’s 20th annual Stars To The Rescue concert will feature a plethora of music legends, including the Eagles’ bassist Timothy B. Schmidt, the Doobie Brothers’ Tom Johnston, trumpeter Chris Botti, singer Charlie Williams, and comedians Lewis Black and Kathleen Madigan.

The charity was created in 1991 by Tony and Elaine La Russa to address the needs of companion animals. ARF saves dogs and cats who have run out of time at public shelters and brings people and animals together to enrich each others lives. ARF strives to create a world where every loving dog and cat has a home, where every lonely person has a companion animal, and where children learn to care.

The Karla Smith Foundation and partner organization, Bring Change 2 Mind, held a fundraising gala Friday evening where they were joined by Tony, Golden-Globe and Emmy award winning actress Glenn Close to kick off an unprecedented mental health awareness and anti-stigma campaign to provide support for people who have a loved one suffering from mental illness.

“About one in six people suffer from a mental illness,” Close said, “It’s part of being a human…It’s not a cool subject for a lot of people, it makes people uncomfortable.”

In 2009, BringChange2Mind produced a public service announcement which featured Close and her sister, Jessie, who suffers from bipolar disorder.

Glenn Close Is Removing The Shame That Shadows Mental Illness

In an effort to bring mental illness into everyday dialogue, Glenn Close co-created the Bring Change 2 Mind campaign and, with the help of director Ron Howard, created a public service announcement pointing out how common such illnesses really are.

The first problem about awareness, even though one in six adults suffer from one form or another, is that mental illness is invisible. The other problem is the stigma attached to it.

“I think a lot of people will find that it’s kind of a relief to simply acknowledge that mental health issues are something every family deals with,” says Howard, “and yet it clearly does still remain stigmatized.”

Alec Baldwin was one of a host of stars spotted on the ski slopes at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Sports Invitational in support of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Waterkeeper Alliance during the weekend.

The annual event raises funds to protect North American and Canadian waterways, and regularly raises over $1 million. The event was first held in 1986, and has gone on to become one of the most popular celebrity skiing events, attracting stars such as Pierce Brosnan, Christie Brinkley and Tim Robbins.

This year’s event is believed to have been attended by Glenn Close, Beau Bridges, Tom Cochrane, Peter Fonda, John McEnroe and Chad Lowe. Celebrity Lip Prints To Be Auctioned For Charity

A collection of over 50 original signed lip prints from some of the biggest names in film will be auctioned in April in support of the charity Medicinema.

Amongst the stars who have donated a Healed With A Kiss lip print are Keira Knightley, Ewan McGregor, Kate Winslet, John Travolta, Shirley MacLaine, Jeff Goldblum, Madonna, Jeremy Irons, Sigourney Weaver, Dame Helen Mirren, Liam Neeson and Glenn Close.

A window display, featuring copies of a selection of the kisses, will be unveiled in Fenwick Bond Street, London and Newcastle during the lead up to Valentine’s Day 2009. The entire collection of over 50 original Healed With A Kiss signed prints will be exhibited at The Movieum, County Hall, London in March 2009. The Exhibition will culminate with a Party on 2nd April at the Movieum, as the first in a series of events to help celebrate MediCinema’s 10th Anniversary year. The lip prints will be auctioned during the Party at the Movieum to help MediCinema bring the magic that is cinema to patients, including those in beds and wheelchairs, in hospitals around the UK.

AARP Magazine, the world’s largest-circulation magazine, has announced the recipients of its fifth annual Inspire Awards.

Glenn Close and Quincy Jones will be presented with awards for their humanitarian work at a special ceremony on December 8 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.

Close is being recognized for her work as a mental health advocate, especially her involvement with Fountain House, a nonprofit organization that she discovered while searching for help for her relatives.

Let loose the dogs of charity this Monday, October 13, as 25 life-sized fiberglass canines decorated by celebrities are paraded through the streets of New York.

The creations will be aboard a float in the annual Columbus Day parade, and will then be sold off in an online charity auction. Among the stars who have donated their artistic talents are Richard Gere, Chevy Chase, Glenn Close, Robert Kennedy Jr., Paul Shaffer, Martha Stewart, Vanessa Williams, Stanley Tucci, Cyndi Lauper, Rachael Ray, Robin Quivers, Dan Aykroyd, and Jane Goodall.

The auction – which will run until November 1 – will benefit Green Chimneys, an organization that operates a special education school, a residential treatment center for children, and a farm and wildlife rehabilitation center in Brewster.

Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters’ Broadway Barks will hold its tenth annual dog and cat adopt-a-thon July 12 in New York.

An increasingly popular event attended by over 6000 people last year, actors Glenn Close, Mario Lopez and an entourage of Broadway performers will be on hand at this year’s event to present homeless animals for adoption. The animals come from various New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies.

Broadway Barks was originally founded by Moore and Peters to promote pet adoption. However, it has also become a valuable link between the various independent shelters and rescue groups for promotion and fund raising, and is entering into public education on responsible pet ownership, spay/neuter, pet i.d., and to simply inform about the bleak predicament of the city’s homeless dogs and cats.

Glenn Close Throws a Bone to Charity

Glenn Close is a five-time Academy Award nominee and two-time Golden Globe winner, but it’s her latest role at Fetchdog.com that’s earned the actress a ‘Golden Bone’ from Look to the Stars.

“I’m in a redemption mode, to get back to my real self,” joked Close, who’s portrayed characters that haven’t always been kind to animals, “The real truth is that I’ve been surrounded by dogs my entire life.”

Last October, Close and her husband David Shaw started Fetchdog.com, a site that sells high-end dog products while raising money for charity. Included on the site is Close’s blog, Lively Licks where she interviews celebrities about their dogs, profiles people who work with dogs and dishes out tips on anything from puppy training to canine health.
