Bruce Springsteen To Rock Autism Concert

Autism Speaks is proud to announce the next performance in their Concert for Autism series.

This year’s star-studded event will feature comedian Jerry Seinfeld, with a special appearance by “The Boss”, Bruce Springsteen. The evening will be hosted by NBC’s Meet the Press moderator, David Gregory, on November 17, at world famous landmark Carnegie Hall.

The event will benefit the families and individuals who live with autism every day by supporting research, awareness and family services initiatives

Glenn Close Is Removing The Shame That Shadows Mental Illness

In an effort to bring mental illness into everyday dialogue, Glenn Close co-created the Bring Change 2 Mind campaign and, with the help of director Ron Howard, created a public service announcement pointing out how common such illnesses really are.

The first problem about awareness, even though one in six adults suffer from one form or another, is that mental illness is invisible. The other problem is the stigma attached to it.

“I think a lot of people will find that it’s kind of a relief to simply acknowledge that mental health issues are something every family deals with,” says Howard, “and yet it clearly does still remain stigmatized.”

The stigma is so powerful that it causes many sufferers of illnesses such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and post traumatic stress disorder to go undiagnosed, and therefore remain without the help that is available to them. Close’s sister, Jessie, whose bipolar disorder was not diagnosed until she was 47, sees it as very damaging: “We face a stigma that can be as painful as the disease itself.”

Often the result of ignorance, stigma can simply come from not knowing what to say, not knowing what to do, or not even knowing if someone is afflicted, and that’s what Close is addressing through the Bring Change 2 Mind campaign. She wants people to get past the fear and get on with the treatment.

“Change a mind about mental illness and you can change a life,” says Close. “It’s just the beginning. Words are very powerful.”

Taylor Swift Signs Elephant For Family Health International

As reported earlier by Look To The Stars, Family Health International is one of many charities to benefit from the current auction of celebrity-signed toy elephants organized by PROJECT ZAMBI.

Among those who have signed the elephants specifically for FHI are Taylor Swift (pictured below), the Jonas Brothers, Hugh Jackman, Heidi Klum and Ellen DeGeneres & Portia de Rossi.

Will Smith's Children Support Charity Initiative

Jaden and Willow Smith – the actor children of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith – have spoken about their support for PROJECT ZAMBI, a charity initiative started by a group of Hasbro employees to help raise awareness and funds for the estimated 15 million children who have lost parents and relatives to the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

“Willow and I joined Project Zambi to represent all the kids out there who want to make the world a better place,” said Jaden. “We want to encourage kids everywhere to lend a hand and join us in spreading the word about how much children who have been orphaned by AIDS in Africa need our help.”

Look To The Stars’ Lead Host Michelle Vink attended the annual V-Day event – a global movement to stop violence against women and girls – in Santa Monica last week and filed this report.

Imagine having your life or the life of a family member threatened simply for crying for help against unspeakable violent sexual crimes violated against you. This is what so many of the women in the Democratic Republic of Congo are going though today. This year for V-Day, the monumental performance of The Vagina Monologues had a new monologue written by the original playwright, Eve Ensler, that was inspired by her personal awareness of the situation of the women in the Congo.

For those of you that don’t know, this V-Day is a different kind of Valentine’s Day. Every year between Feb 1st and March 31st, thousands of performances across the world are set in motion to raise funds and awareness as part of “A Global Movement to End Violence Against Women & Girls.” Rosario Dawson, Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek and Kerry Washington are just a few of the powerful Hollywood forces that are all members of the V-Board.

The Vagina Monologues – originally performed by Ensler (also adoptive mother of Dylan McDermott) – now has had celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg, Glenn Close, Susan Sarandon, Oprah Winfrey and more all star in the Obie Award winning play. It has also been translated into 45 different languages, performed in over 119 countries, become a television production, book and is now the benefit performance for this global non-profit that has raised over $50 million dollars for women’s anti-violence groups, shelters and crisis centers.

Proceeds from this particular Santa Monica event benefit Peace Over Violence (for which Calista Flockhart is the national spokesperson) as well as the V-Day Global Fund. Calista was not only representing her cause this night but also actively involved as one of the actresses in this sensational celebrity reading. Among the star-studded cast were Oscar-winner Christine Lahti, Emmy-winner Doris Roberts, Penny Johnson Jerald from 24, Fairuza Balk, comedian Debra Skelton (formerly known as Debra Wilson), Tricia Leigh Fischer of 7th Heaven, and author/actress Elaine Kagan. Stars Go Downhill For Charity

Alec Baldwin was one of a host of stars spotted on the ski slopes at the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise Sports Invitational in support of Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Waterkeeper Alliance during the weekend.

The annual event raises funds to protect North American and Canadian waterways, and regularly raises over $1 million. The event was first held in 1986, and has gone on to become one of the most popular celebrity skiing events, attracting stars such as Pierce Brosnan, Christie Brinkley and Tim Robbins.

This year’s event is believed to have been attended by Glenn Close, Beau Bridges, Tom Cochrane, Peter Fonda, John McEnroe and Chad Lowe. Also spotted making their way down the slopes were ER star Juliana Margulies, former Beverly Hills 90210 actor Ian Ziering, Olympic gold medalist Al Joyner, Sopranos actor Joe Pantoliano and environmental warrior and actor Ed Begley Jr..

“For the Canadian groups, this has been the primary fuel for our growth in Canada,” said Mark Mattson, president of Lake Ontario Waterkeeper and the Canadian representative to Waterkeeper Alliance’s board of directors. “Kennedy has put more and more money into our groups. The event has really built a base in Canada to bring people in to get to know Kennedy and his message.”

Glenn Close And Quincy Jones Share Inspire Awards

AARP Magazine, the world’s largest-circulation magazine, has announced the recipients of its fifth annual Inspire Awards.

Glenn Close and Quincy Jones will be presented with awards for their humanitarian work at a special ceremony on December 8 at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C.

Close is being recognized for her work as a mental health advocate, especially her involvement with Fountain House, a nonprofit organization that she discovered while searching for help for her relatives.

“I’ve seen mental illness firsthand,” she said. “I know there are millions of people affected, and it’s not just the patient who is suffering. It’s everyone around them.”

Next year she will front a national advertising campaign intended to diminish the stigma of mental illness.

“When I first thought about doing this, I wondered if people would think that I was mentally ill,” says Close. “Then I thought, ’What’s the alternative? Not to do it?’”

Musical icon Quincy Jones’ honor is the result of his work in the fight against global poverty. His Quincy Jones Foundation helps children around the world overcome poverty as well as assisting with programs to eradicate malaria in Africa, developing housing in post-apartheid South Africa, and establishing youth centers in conflict-ridden areas.

Other honorees this year include Richard M. Cohen (Voice for the Chronically Ill), Martin Eakes (Lending to the Poor), Katherine Freund (Transportation Activist), Peter Gallagher (Alzheimer’s Advocate), David E. Hayes-Bautista, Ph.D. (Latino-Health Researcher), Susan Love, M.D. (Cancer Crusader), Rose Nakamura (Compassionate Caregiver), and Alma Powell (Children’s Advocate).

“These leaders set a great example for all on how passion can support and spark change in creative, innovative ways. Their stories are truly inspiring,” said Nancy Graham, Vice President and Editor of AARP The Magazine.

Stars Paint Dogs For Parade And Auction

Let loose the dogs of charity this Monday, October 13, as 25 life-sized fiberglass canines decorated by celebrities are paraded through the streets of New York.

The creations will be aboard a float in the annual Columbus Day parade, and will then be sold off in an online charity auction. Among the stars who have donated their artistic talents are Richard Gere, Chevy Chase, Glenn Close, Robert Kennedy Jr., Paul Shaffer, Martha Stewart, Vanessa Williams, Stanley Tucci, Cyndi Lauper, Rachael Ray, Robin Quivers, Dan Aykroyd, and Jane Goodall.

The auction – which will run until November 1 – will benefit Green Chimneys, an organization that operates a special education school, a residential treatment center for children, and a farm and wildlife rehabilitation center in Brewster.

After preparing herself for the biggest night of the year, Look To The Stars Celebrity Ambassador Rachel Zeskind found her way to the red carpet of the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards earlier this week, where she caught up with some of the stars:

Arrival was tricky – after an apparent security breach, additional measures had been put into place to secure the safety of all in attendance, thus making parking an hour long waiting process that was filled with numerous police and bomb squad check points.

Once there – and very late a mad dash to connect with my publicist was made – I headed to the red carpet as fast as six-inch high-heeled shoes would allow. Then came the insanity of the red carpet for an event of this magnitude, hundreds of stars in front of a thousand members of the press. Video cameras and crews swarmed everywhere and camera’s flashed from every angle down the entire red carpet walk.

Honestly, it’s intimidating and weird. I stand there, suck in my tummy and try not to feel less pretty, less famous, less tall, less thin…yadayadayada… and remember that on this day, I am the very best reflection of me that I can be. I accept this, try to say something loving to myself and smile posing for the photo’s. My insides are vibrating and I hope I don’t look as freaked out as I feel inside. No matter how many times one walks down a red carpet, the experience is intimidating and surreal.

Once inside I took my seat and tried to decompress as the show began. From inside the Nokia Theater a sea of glamour spread out from the edges of the theater down to the stage. The room was abuzz. This is one of the few times every year when all the actors and actresses and producers and writers and directors all get a chance to be in the same place at the same time, catch up, meet the ones they don’t know, and acknowledge and appreciate their peers.

One of the most powerful acceptance speeches was by Glenn Close. Her statements about how Hollywood has finally begun to recognize that ‘mature’ women can be sexy and powerful and play the leads in successful TV shows was met by an eruption of applause. She is one of those ground-breaking, pace-setting leaders for all female actresses. It is women like her that shake it up and teach people that women are not disposable after thirty – in fact, they just get better, hotter, and smarter!

During the commercial breaks and after parties I was able to catch up with some celebrities and talk to them about their favorite charities, organizations and ask them what issues were on their hearts and minds currently.

Larry David of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ said voter fraud was a huge concern for him right now as we move closer and closer to the election date for our next US President.

Conan O’Brien of ‘Late Night With Conan O’Brien’ said his most recent favorite charity is the Fresh Air Fund NYC.

Christina DeRosa, the up and coming star who will be seen in the new FOX series ‘Dollhouse,’ said that she was an Agape member and fully supported their outreach programs.

At the TV Guide after party I caught up with Emmy award winning composer John Wineglass – whose favorite charity is CASA – and Jon Voight, who is a passionate supporter of the troops stationed overseas.

The point to this all is no matter who you are, what you do for a living or what you look like, you are a human being who sucks in air the same way all the stars do. Your brain shares similar positive and negative thoughts as anyone else’s and certain issues move your hearts too. As a human being you were given a very specific unique set of gifts, passions and abilities to be appreciated by yourself and others as well as to be used to do your part in changing the world we all share.

Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters’ Animal Adopt-A-Thon

Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters’ Broadway Barks will hold its tenth annual dog and cat adopt-a-thon July 12 in New York.

An increasingly popular event attended by over 6000 people last year, actors Glenn Close, Mario Lopez and an entourage of Broadway performers will be on hand at this year’s event to present homeless animals for adoption. The animals come from various New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies.

Broadway Barks was originally founded by Moore and Peters to promote pet adoption. However, it has also become a valuable link between the various independent shelters and rescue groups for promotion and fund raising, and is entering into public education on responsible pet ownership, spay/neuter, pet i.d., and to simply inform about the bleak predicament of the city’s homeless dogs and cats.

Besides an afternoon of festivities, an auction of celebrity-autographed memorabilia to benefit attending shelters, and finding permanent homes for so many animals, Peters will be on hand to sign copies of her children’s book, Broadway Barks. The illustrated book, about a dog who finds himself alone in a city park, comes with a reading of the story on CD and an original song performed by Bernadette Peters. Proceeds of book sales go, naturally, to the Broadway Barks organization.

Glenn Close Throws a Bone to Charity

Glenn Close is a five-time Academy Award nominee and two-time Golden Globe winner, but it’s her latest role at Fetchdog.com that’s earned the actress a ‘Golden Bone’ from Look to the Stars.

“I’m in a redemption mode, to get back to my real self,” joked Close, who’s portrayed characters that haven’t always been kind to animals, “The real truth is that I’ve been surrounded by dogs my entire life.”

Last October, Close and her husband David Shaw started Fetchdog.com, a site that sells high-end dog products while raising money for charity. Included on the site is Close’s blog, Lively Licks where she interviews celebrities about their dogs, profiles people who work with dogs and dishes out tips on anything from puppy training to canine health.

The most unique aspect of the site is that Fetchdog.com funnels a portion of its sales to dog-related causes. All you have to do is purchase an item and a percentage of the total will be donated to select dog charities with no added cost to you. Martha Stewart, for example, chose the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. When shoppers place their orders through Stewart’s page, the ASPCA receives roughly 6 percent of the price.

“Our dogs love us and keep us laughing through good times and bad,” writes Close on her blog, “This blog is a tribute to all the fabulous dogs who trot and wag their way through our lives and to the people who they have so successfully trained.”

Close has interviewed many dog lovers such as Mary Steenburgen and Ted Danson, who directed contributions to Little Angels Pug Rescue, and Dan Zelman and Debra Messing, who selected Animal Rescue New Orleans.

In one of her blogs, there is a great video of Close and her husband taking part in a training exercise with ski patrol member Tracy Christensen and his avalanche rescue dog, Mick. The video, narrated by Close, shows the couple buried beneath 4 feet of snow while Mick catches their scent and leads his handler to their rescue.

Close has more than one furry friend herself, including several canines whose lineage appears to be a mix of cairn terrier, West Highland white terrier and indeterminate other breeds. And wouldn’t you know it, she always brings her ‘kids’ to the set while shooting “Damages,” FX cable network’s critically acclaimed legal drama in which Close plays high-powered attorney Patty Hewes.

“They really change the atmosphere of the set when they come on. People just love it,” Close said. “And as long as they’re in a place where you can’t hear their toenails click when the camera turns on, then we’re fine.”

Celebrities Unite For Earth Day

Tomorrow, April 22, will see one of the largest global events uniting the planet against climate change to be held this year. Millions of evironmentally-minded people around the planet will hold events to celebrate the 38th annual Earth Day, a massive campaign focussing on global warming and raising awareness for a cleaner environment.

First held in 1970, and established by US Senator Gaylord Nelson, the event marks the anniversary of the modern environmental movement. All over the world, the day will see concerned citizens of the planet out in force, calling for action against global warming and a healthy, sustainable environment. Breakfasts, Scuba diving contests, celebrations, parties, wine and food festivals, marathons, and concerts are just some of the thousands of events that have been planned around the globe by the Earth Day Network, the driving-force behind the event.

One of the major campaigns being promoted in the US as part of Earth Day 2008 is the Call For Climate initiative, which encourages people to ring Congress and demand climate change action to be taken.

“It doesn’t take a doctor on Scrubs to tell you our climate is changing,” said Zach Braff, who has joined Kevin Bacon and Chevy Chase in recording messages encouraging people to support the campaign. “Earth Day Network wants you to call Congress on Earth Day, April 22, and ask them to take tough and fair action on climate change. Put this number in your phone now – 202 224 3121. That’s Congress. Ask your representative or senator to bring us a healthier climate.”

Washington DC has already kicked off its Earth Day celebrations with a huge concert held on Sunday, featuring performances by Jordin Sparks, The Roots, O.A.R. and more. Speakers at the event included Russell Simmons, Edward Norton, and Tom Friedman.

Big Names Flock To End Violence Against Women

The tenth annual V-Day V To The Tenth festival arrives next weekend – and it is expected to be the biggest V-Day gala yet, with a huge outpouring of support from celebrities. Stars such as Salma Hayek, Oprah Winfrey, Faith Hill, Jane Fonda, Jessica Alba, Glenn Close, Rosario Dawson, Jennifer Hudson, Julia Stiles, Ali Larter, Marisa Tomei, Calpernia Addams, and many others will be in attendance.

Over $50 million has been raised by the charity, which supports local and global groups’ efforts to eradicate violence against women and girls. New Orleans was chosen to stage the event this year to honor “Katrina Warriors for their strength and resilience in the face of devastating loss.”

The founder of V-Day, Eve Ensler, said, “Although we cannot prevent such events as Hurricane Katrina, we can be there with and for each other when they occur. We can extend our hand; we can remember those who have lost their homes, their jobs, their minds and their way.”

The April 11-12 gala will hold musical performances, speeches from activists, and a performance of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues, which first opened in New York in 1997. Performed in cities all over the world, it is a series of monologues of female perspectives on a varied ‘female experience.’ With few props, actresses use shock and humor to break down the barriers of tradition, shame, ignorance, and political correctness.

With the spotlight on New Orleans, the funds raised at this year’s campaign will support “education and grassroots projects that economically empower the women of the Gulf South.”

Celebrities To Attend V-Day In New Orleans

April 11 and 12 will mark a special celebration in New Orleans – a celebration of hope, of vision, of spirit, of response, and of action. It will see a gathering of united attitudes and a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. The tenth annual V-Day festival is set to bring a change to the way the world thinks and acts, and it has gathered the support of a host of celebrities to help get its message heard.

V-Day is a non-profit organization that distributes funds to grassroots national and international initiatives and programs that work to stop violence against women and girls. Named one of Worth Magazine’s 100 Best Charities and one of Marie Claire Magazine’s Top Ten Charities, the V-Day movement has raised over $50 million in the last 9 years. And for their 10th anniversary, they have chosen New Orleans to host their star-studded gala event.

New Orleans Arena will come alive on April 12 for V To The Tenth, an evening set to open hearts and minds and raise awareness and money for groups working to end violence around the world. The evening will see international performances of The Vagina Monologues and musical performances, as well as speeches from V-Day activists from across the globe, including Kenya, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Philippines, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Eastern Europe.
