James Cromwell Calls On Jockey Club To Stop Horse Slaughter

As Derby weekend began, Oscar- and three-time Emmy-nominee James Cromwell sent an urgent letter to James Gagliano, president of The Jockey Club, calling on him to adopt PETA’s proposal for a concrete plan to help fund the retirement of thoroughbred racehorses.

More than 10,000 thoroughbreds in the U.S. alone are sent to Mexico and Canada every year to be slaughtered for dog food and even for overseas human consumption. In the letter, Cromwell—whose many film credits include Secretariat—points out that The Jockey Club is in a unique position to ensure the lifelong well-being of these horses.

“The slaughter of 10,000 thoroughbred racehorses every year is the great shame of the racing industry,” wrote the actor. "These magnificent animals should not end up on a meat hook after a terrifying journey to a terrifying death.

Farm Sanctuary Celebrates 25 Years Of Animal Protection

This year, Farm Sanctuary, the organization responsible for bringing farm animal issues into the mainstream consciousness celebrates its 25th anniversary.

As the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, Farm Sanctuary urged passage of the first U.S. laws to protect animals on farms, initiated the first cruelty convictions at stockyards and slaughterhouses, and established the first and largest rescue and refuge network for farm animals in North America. Along the way, the organization has encouraged the public to embrace compassionate living through public campaigns, like getting the first veggie burger on Burger King menus and welcoming visitors to its sanctuaries, where thousands of people have had transformational experiences — including Twitter Co-Founder Biz Stone, who became a vegan after a visit to the New York Shelter.

James Cameron To Attend Avatar Home Tree Event On Earth Day

Following their visit to the Amazon rainforests last week, James Cameron and Sigourney Weaver headed back to Washington DC to talk about their experience.

“A lot of people around the world consider the Amazon the last great river and the Amazon forest is vital to the survival of the whole planet,” said Weaver. “[We saw] tribal chieftains talking about their grandchildren, how the way of life that they’ve lived for centuries will disappear on a whole section of the Amazon.”

The pair were in Brazil to raise awareness of the indigenous communities’ battles to stop the massive Belo Monte Dam on the Xingu River in the Amazon rainforest. On returning to the US, they learnt a judge had ordered the suspension of the preliminary license for the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam and the cancellation of the auction.

Celebrities Sign Letter To Stop Tail Docking

An animal rights charity has gathered support from a number of celebrities for its urgent call to end a cruel practice commonplace in the dairy industry.

On behalf of Kim Basinger, Alicia Silverstone, Bill Maher, Bob Barker and a host of other California celebrities – as well as their more than 200,000 members and supporters – Farm Sanctuary, the nation’s leading farm animal protection organization, sent a letter today to Governor Schwarzenegger urging him to do the right thing and sign a bill sitting on his desk that would end the cruel and outdated practice of amputating dairy cows’ tails.

Both chambers of the California legislature recently passed a bill that would ban tail docking in the dairy industry, but the bill will not become law unless the governor signs it.

Meet The Barkers’ Shanna Moakler is the latest celebrity to appear in an ad for PETA.

The 33-year-old joins Sir Paul McCartney, Joss Stone, Alicia Silverstone, Forest Whitaker, Casey Affleck, and James Cromwell in advertising for the organization, and didn’t hesitate when asked to film an advert.

“There are so many good reasons not to eat meat, but for me, the well-being of my children is the most important,” said Moakler, who has appeared in several films and on many TV shows, including CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Dancing With the Stars. “I want them to be healthy and also to understand that when they say ‘No!’ to meat, they’re saying ‘No!’ to animal cruelty.
