Celebrity Guests To Hit Cannes For AIDS Charity

The annual amfAR Cinema Against AIDS Gala will hit Cannes tomorrow, May 19, with some very special guests.

Janet Jackson, Brooke Shields, Gwen Stefani, Michelle Yeoh, Milla Jovovich and Patrick Dempsey are expected to be among the guests during the event at the 64th annual Cannes International Film Festival. Other event chairs include amfAR Chairman Kenneth Cole, amfAR Global Fundraising Chair Sharon Stone, Karl Lagerfeld and Donatella Versace.

The annual star-studded event at the Hotel Du Cap-Eden-Roc in Antibes, France, will include a formal dinner and a world-renowned live auction, all to benefit amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research. As in previous years, Harvey Weinstein will recruit talent from the room to help with the live auction.

Renee Zellweger and Sarah Silverman will make special appearances at the LA Gay and Lesbian Center’s An Evening With Women this weekend.

An Evening with Women is an annual event that raises much-needed funds for the women-specific services of the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center. This year’s event, held for the second year in the posh International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, will be steeped in rock ‘n’ roll chic and include a hosted reception, dinner, star-studded show and auction of unique, exclusive and exotic items.

L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center programs and services supported by An Evening with Women include women’s health and medical, legal assistance, domestic violence prevention & education, cultural programs, self-enrichment courses, social events and discussion groups.

On September 15, 2009, amfAR – The American Foundation for AIDS Research – and Dignitas International will partner on the first-ever Cinema Against AIDS event during the Toronto International Film Festival.

Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, and amfAR Ambassador Michelle Yeoh will serve as chairs of the evening, along with amfAR Chairman Kenneth Cole, John Demsey, Milutin Gatsby, Trudy Grant, amfAR Founding Chairman Dr. Mathilde Krim, Dignitas co-founder Dr. James Orbinski, and Kevin Sullivan. Stars Expected At Cathy's Kids Gala Tonight

Celebrities from sports, TV and film are expected to attend the 5th anniversary gala of the Cathy’s Kids Foundation later today, Friday April 17.

Cathy’s Kids was founded by Los Angeles Lakers star Lamar Odom in March 2004 to make a positive impact on the lives of under-privileged children, as well as target a disease that has played a significant role in Lamar’s life, cancer. Lamar lost his mother to stomach cancer and is committed to help causes that are focused on finding a cure and helping people who suffer from the disease.

Leonardo DiCaprio Honored By Cinema For Peace

The charity gala event Cinema For Peace has attracted numerous politicians and celebrities in Berlin this week in support of the organization’s goal of promoting peace and international understanding through film.

Most notably, Leonardo DiCaprio received an award for his efforts in backing the documentary “The 11th Hour.” As a special honoree, DiCaprio was presented with the International Green Film Award presented by BMW by Mikhail Gorbachev. The award offers a platform for environmental activists to raise public awareness for environmental issues and comes with a $250,000 donation for an environmental foundation or film project.

DiCaprio has become known as one of the hardest working environmentalists in Hollywood. He’s is a board member of Global Green USA and the National Resources Defense Council, and also set up the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation to help draw attention to environmental issues.

Celebrities Cast Aside Their Clothing For Charity

It is not a case of what to wear for celebrities this month, but rather of what to give away, as eBay and other auction websites are inundated with the closet cast-outs of a variety of actors and singers.

Film company New Line Cinema is leading the charge by auctioning off original costumes from their current hit movie, Hairspray. Among the costumes are two dresses worn by John Travolta in the film, as well as the silk top and capri pants belonging to Queen Latifah. The proceeds will benefit Citymeals On Wheels, a charity that looks after those in need in New York City, as well as The Harry Holmberg Memorial Foundation, which is dedicated to sick children in the city.

Bidding on each costume is expected to reach $500, and the auction ends on August 4. It can be viewed at www.hairspray.ebay.com.
