Gisele Bundchen Wants Sustainable Energy In Africa

On her first official visit to Africa, UNEP Goodwill Ambassador and iconic face of fashion, Gisele Bundchen, went to the grassroots level in Kenya to experience the reality of energy poverty and to see how Kenyans are transforming their lives by accessing sustainable energy.

“Energy affects everything. Children can study at night when they have access to electricity. If we can bring electricity to everyone, we can help people to survive,” she told a press conference at the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) headquarters in Nairobi.

“It’s unjust if people do not have access to electricity. Energy for all is achievable. Just 2% of global investment is needed,” she added, speaking in the runup to the global launch of the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All (IYSEA).

Gisele Bundchen Visits Baby Elephants In Nairobi

On Friday, January 13, supermodel Gisele Bundchen visited the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s headquarters in Nairobi National Park.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust was established in 1977 to honor to memory of naturalist David Leslie William Sheldrick MBE, founder Warden of Tsavo East National Park in Kenya, where he served from its inception in 1948 until his transfer to Nairobi in 1976 to head the Planning Unit of the newly created Wildlife Conservation & Management Department. David died 6 months later but his legacy of excellence and the systems he installed for the management of Tsavo and wildlife generally in Kenya, particularly in the sphere of wildlife husbandry and ethics, lives on.

According to the charity, Gisele Bundchen was there to “learn more about the Trust’s conservation projects and to view the orphaned elephants in our care. She was entertained by an exuberant mudbath and dust bath session, and was captivated by the individual rescue stories, and the circumstances surrounding their second chance at life, understanding that the orphans in our care represent those fortunate enough to be found and rescued, while sadly many remain not so lucky.”

Gisele Bundchen Gives Modeling Tips To Cancer Kids

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen surprised a group of young cancer patients at the Jimmy Fund Clinic at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston during the weekend by giving them a special modeling class.

Gisele gave the 29 young girls lessons in catwalk etiquette, and they were also treated to manicures, pedicures, make-up and hair styling as part of their special day out, organized by local sports broadcaster John Dennis. The local sports host approached the supermodel through her husband, New England Patriots star Tom Brady.

“It was the most amazing, wonderful, wonderful thing I’ve ever seen,” Dennis told the Boston Herald. “It was unbelievable. She made every one of those girls feel beautiful, loved and important. It was very, very special.”

Gisele Bundchen Plants Trees In Brazil

Gisele Bundchen was in Brazil this week to attend an event at the Center of Forest Experiment of the SOS Atlantic Forest Foundation.

Surrounded by more than 80 children between 8 and 11 years old, Gisele participated in the symbolic planting of seeds at the same place in which more than 10 thousand trees will be planted throughout the year. The activity serves to draw attention to the environment and educate the little ones about an important issue for our future. A partnership between the model and Cartoon Network Brazil to support the Forests of the Future Project.

Before the event started, Gisele gave some interviews and soon headed to the auditorium where children waited excitedly for her. Gisele’s entrance was dramatic. Colorful lasers made the moment special and magical as little ones cheered with delight as they saw the leader of the Gisele and the Green Team take the stage. When it came time to get their hands dirty by planting seedlings, every child wanted a hug from Gisele! All the children helped in this symbolic act, and in the end they shared a collective shout of “Viva Green”. Such a special morning for everyone!

Don Cheadle To Help Name Gorillas On World Environment Day

World Environment Day is on June 5, and Don Cheadle will be in Rwanda to celebrate.

The actor will be announcing the winners of a competition to name two baby mountain gorillas at a special ceremony to celebrate the day.

The ceremony of giving a name to a newborn human baby, commonly known as Kwita Izina, has been a Rwandan tradition for centuries. Three decades ago, the Rwanda Office of Tourism and National Parks, and the people of Rwanda, decided to extend this ceremony to include the cherished, endangered gorillas of their country in which 1/3 of the total population lives. The names attributed to these animals play a key role in the monitoring program of individuals and groups in the habitat. The naming ceremony, which was launched as a public outreach campaign in 2005, is aimed at ensuring the future of Rwanda’s mountain gorillas and bringing global awareness to the plight of all gorillas and their habitats.

Leonardo DiCaprio's Titanic Generosity

Another star has joined the endless list of generous celebrities who have made substantial donations toward the earthquake victims of Haiti. Leonardo DiCaprio’s munificent donation of $1million will be distributed immediately to aid in the support and relief of the people who were devastated by the natural disaster that occurred a little over two weeks ago.

The funds, made through the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, will also help in the redevelopment of Haiti’s disintegrated infrastructure.

Former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, are both extremely appreciative of Leonardo’s generosity. Mr. Clinton states, “I am grateful for the generous gift Leonardo DiCaprio and his Foundation have made in support of our Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. Combined with the outpouring of donations from Americans and citizens around the world of all means, this support will go a long way to help save more lives, reach more people with emergency assistance, and help the Haitian people build their nation back stronger and more secure than it was before the earthquake.”

Gisele Bundchen attended the The Rainforest Alliance’s annual gala at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City last night, May 6, to award its 2009 honorees.

Bono Faces The Real Deal In Elle Magazine

As a rock and roll star, Bono has written some of the most important music of our time, and now, the U2 front man has been asked by ELLE Magazine to turn a page (RED) and address “the greatest health crisis in 600 years: HIV/AIDS.”

In his one page letter, which appears in this month’s edition, Bono shares startling statistics on HIV/AIDS, including the fact that 90% of new cases occur in females aged 15-24. “I can’t get my head around that fact, let alone get it out of my head” he writes. Bono also shares details of his journey to Africa six years ago, where he witnessed the devastating effect the disease has had on the communities, including “orphans raising orphans.”

Bono also writes about the importance of (RED), its products and the pure power of consumer activism. “They have power in their pockets,” he writes, “(RED) raises money for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS—$120 million so far. That is enough to buy drugs for more than 750,000 people for a year. (RED) funds prevention and counseling programs as well as treatment, and is now the thirteenth biggest contributor to the Global Fund; it’s giving more than many countries.”
