Gisele Bundchen Becomes UN Environmental Ambassador

The face of some of the world’s most exclusive products is to become the new face of global environmental action.

Brazil-born Gisele Bundchen, among the most recognized top models of all time, has been designated Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

As Goodwill Ambassador, Gisele Bündchen will help UNEP in its mission to raise awareness and inspire action to protect the environment. The darling of the fashion industry will take on some of the biggest threats facing the planet, climate change and environmental degradation.

Gisele Bundchen, passionate environmentalist said:

“The environment has always been my passion. I grew up in a small town and I had the opportunity to live surrounded by nature. I couldn’t have asked for a better childhood. We must act now, so future generations have the same opportunity. Mother Earth is our fundamental life-support system, and by becoming aware and responsible now, we can assist in preserving the planet.”

She added: “I have been working on environmental issues for a long time and agreed to become a Goodwill Ambassador to be part of a global and far-reaching organization. Now it’s about action on a global scale to secure a healthy future for the next generation, wherever they live in the world.”

Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director said: “Gisele is among a handful of talented individuals and personalities that have a truly global reach. She is also a committed and passionate environmentalist. UNEP is delighted to welcome her on board as a Goodwill Ambassador so that with her help, we can make environmental action a global brand and a life-style choice, from New York to Nairobi and from Sao Paolo to Shanghai.”

Bundchen attended a ceremony in New York’s Washington Square Park to receive the ambassadorship on Sunday.

Gisele Bundchen attended the The Rainforest Alliance’s annual gala at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City last night, May 6, to award its 2009 honorees.

Sustainability commitments from global businesses continue to grow despite the current economic recession, helping to further on-the-ground conservation efforts. The annual gala recognizes companies and individuals for their work with the Rainforest Alliance on making sustainable supply chain decisions or for their longtime support of conservation work.

“The honorees we’ve selected have made solid commitments that benefit ecosystems, workers and wildlife worldwide,” said Tensie Whelan, president of the Rainforest Alliance, who was named one of the 100 most influential people in business ethics for the second year in a row by Ethisphere magazine. “By making sustainability a priority in their business decisions, they demonstrate its importance not only for the longevity of their businesses but also for the well-being of the entire planet.”

Celebrities Sign iPods For Charity Auction

Tonic.com has announced the launch of a new charity auction series. Leading celebrities from the worlds of music, film, television, and fashion have contributed an autographed iPod loaded with their personal playlist to be auctioned off, with all proceeds benefiting Music Rising, a campaign founded in 2005 to replace lost or destroyed instruments of musicians in the Gulf Coast Region after the hurricane disasters.

Over seventy celebrities will participate in the auction series including U2’s The Edge, former President Bill Clinton, Madonna, Beyoncé Knowles, Cher, Donna Karan, Warren Buffett, Christy Turlington, Britney Spears, Michael Stipe, Gwen Stefani, Mariah Carey, Stevie Nicks, Michael Buble, Ben Affleck, Ellen DeGeneres, Estelle, Faith Hill, Carrie Underwood, Scarlett Johansson, Peter Wentz, Randy Jackson, will.i.am, Kevin Bacon, Gisele Bundchen, Marc Jacobs, Ed Burns, Samantha Ronson, Nick Lachey, Petra Nemcova, Mandy Moore and many others.

Each celebrity was given a new iPod which they each autographed and Tonic pre-loaded with a playlist of ten to twenty of the celebrities’ favorite songs. Beginning February 12 between one and five separate iPod auctions will simultaneously launch every week on eBay; playlists will be revealed to the public on both tonic.com and eBay when auctions are launched.

Bono Faces The Real Deal In Elle Magazine

As a rock and roll star, Bono has written some of the most important music of our time, and now, the U2 front man has been asked by ELLE Magazine to turn a page (RED) and address “the greatest health crisis in 600 years: HIV/AIDS.”

In his one page letter, which appears in this month’s edition, Bono shares startling statistics on HIV/AIDS, including the fact that 90% of new cases occur in females aged 15-24. “I can’t get my head around that fact, let alone get it out of my head” he writes. Bono also shares details of his journey to Africa six years ago, where he witnessed the devastating effect the disease has had on the communities, including “orphans raising orphans.”

Bono also writes about the importance of (RED), its products and the pure power of consumer activism. “They have power in their pockets,” he writes, “(RED) raises money for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS—$120 million so far. That is enough to buy drugs for more than 750,000 people for a year. (RED) funds prevention and counseling programs as well as treatment, and is now the thirteenth biggest contributor to the Global Fund; it’s giving more than many countries.”

“There are the millions of men and women whose names we don’t know, but whose (RED) purchases are doing nothing less than keeping people alive,” he continues, “(RED) is not asking you to flock to the stores for the sake of it, but if you find yourselves browsing, we are asking you to choose (RED) where you can—for the sake of those who can’t ask you themselves.”

ELLE Magazine Goes RED For Bono

ELLE Magazine has teamed up with Bono, Scarlett Johansson and Gisele Bundchen in the fight against AIDS in Africa.

From mid-January to the end of February, ELLE will simultaneously feature (RED) in more than thirty editions around the world, speaking to more than 20 million readers. Each magazine will feature content provided by the celebrities in relation to the charity, including cover photos of Bundchen, a letter from Bono, and info on Johansson’s trip to Rwanda. (PRODUCT)RED consumers have already helped purchase lifesaving antiretroviral treatment for nearly 80,000 people, and the effort continues.

The issue will appear on January 17, 2009 in ELLE France and in the February issues of 30 other international editions that go on sale in mid-January (except for the UK, Japan and Quebec editions which will be dated March 2009 and go on sale at the end of January).

Gisele Bundchen Spreads Thanksgiving Goodwill

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen surprised a lucky crowd in Roxby, Massachusetts, on Wednesday when she turned up with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady to serve Thanksgiving dinner to job trainees at Goodwill’s HQ.

“I feel it is more of a gift to us to be able to serve them,” Bundchen told NewsCenter 5’s Jack Harper . “I am happy to be here.”

Goodwill Industries International is the world’s largest nonprofit providers of education, training, and career services for people with disadvantages. Bundchen and Brady dished out turkey and all the trimmings unannounced to over 400 job trainees.

“We were so happy to have them,” said Goodwill’s Diana Pisciotta, adding that Brady was unable to make the Patriots’ annual Thanksgiving basket giveaway earlier in the week, so he decided to join in on the fun at Goodwill. “Gisele was very gracious, smiling and talking to people. She’s been a doll.”

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen is to appear naked in a new ad campaign for a Brazilian eco-charity.

Listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the richest supermodel on the planet, the 28-year-old is well known for her support of charities that protect the Amazon rainforest – such as Nascentes do Brasil, ISA, Y Ikatu Xingu, and De Olho nos Mananciais – as well as her work with breast cancer charities, Bono’s (PRODUCT) RED campaign, and the Zero Hunger campaign in her native Brazil.

Now Bundchen has posed – clad only in leaves – on the cover of US magazine American Photo to promote her Forests of the Future project for the reforestation of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The initiative, which was set up with SOS Mata Atlantica in 2004, has planted over 1 million new trees in Bundchen’s name to start reforestation of the Brazilian rainforests.

Supermodel Gisele Bundchen is selling off some of her best jewelry for charity.

The 28-year-old Brazilian model – listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s richest supermodel – has announced she will be selling a personal collection of dazzling bling in a special auction at Christie’s New York next month.

The collection features a 6-carat diamond ring worth $120,000 – $150,000, and a 3.35-carat Sabbadini diamond ring worth $15,000 – $20,000. A percentage of the proceeds from the auction will go to Russell Simmons’ Diamond Empowerment Fund, whose mission is to raise money to support education initiatives in countries where diamonds are a natural resource.

Bundchen is no stranger to philanthropic acts – she donates regularly to Brazilian charities that protect the Amazon rainforest, such as Nascentes do Brasil, ISA, Y Ikatu Xingu, and De Olho nos Mananciais. She is also the face of Bono’s American Express (RED) card – which raises money for Africa’s HIV/AIDS victims – and is the spokesperson for Fashion Targets Breast Cancer.

The auction takes place on October 15, and the lots can be viewed on Christie’s website.

Celebrity Auctions Tackle The Big Issues

Thirteen of the hottest celebrities in Hollywood are creating a buzz with an internet auction taking place in October, in order to raise awareness of one of the biggest and most pervasive threats to life on Earth.

Ebay Giving Works, eBay’s program dedicated to charity listings, is hosting an online auction for the WWF, with 100% of the proceeds going to the World Wildlife Fund’s global conservation initiatives, especially those involved in the fight against climate change.

The auction, which runs from October 3 -12, features a series of 100% organic T shirts emblazoned with the slogan “Hotter Than I Should Be”. The shirts, which have created much interest in the media and Hollywood as a unique way to spread the message that the Earth is warming, have all been signed by a multitude of celebrities, including Scarlett Johansson, Orlando Bloom, Rachael Ray, Harrison Ford, and Cate Blanchett.

“Global warming is the single biggest threat to our environment today,” said John Donoghue, Senior Vice President of the World Wildlife Fund. “We’re thrilled with the overwhelming celebrity support we’ve received, and we are confident this auction will not only garner funds for our work, but will encourage individuals to take action in their own lives to stop climate change.”

The WWF is a leader in the field of climate science, and is a strong and persuasive advocate for the reduction of harmful greenhouse emissions and the increase of energy efficient technologies. For more than 45 years, the non-profit organization has been working to protect nature, and now provides cutting edge scientific research into areas of concern. With a dedicated team of experts in over 50 countries, the WWF focuses on 4 particular areas of impact: creating responsible global warming policies, working with businesses to reduce carbon dioxide levels, implementing adaptation plans to help the planet respond to climate change, and protecting the forests that help mitigate climate change.

The “Hotter Than I Should Be” online auction looks set to provide some much needed funding to the WWF’s ongoing research. Many of the shirts have already reached bids of over $300, with Orlando Bloom’s attracting bids close to $800. Other celebrities who have lent their signitures to the cause include Candice Bergen, Gisele Bundchen, Kevin Bacon, Paul Newman, Charlie Sheen, Cindy Crawford, and Susan Sarandon.

Unsigned “Hotter Than I Should Be” T shirts are also available with donations of over $50 to the WWF, and more information about the auction can be found at www.worldwildlife.org.

Also up for auction on eBay Giving Works in October is a series of pink rubber bath ducks, signed and decorated by celebrities such as Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Lucy Liu, and Matthew McConaughey.

The auction has been organized by Munchkin Inc, the makers of award winning infant and toddler products, as part of their Project Pink breast cancer awareness program, and runs from October 1 to November 4. All proceeds will go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a non-profit organization based in Dallas, Texas, dedicated to education and research into the causes, treatment, and the search for a cure to breast cancer.

Other celebrities to design and sign rubber duckies include Brooke Shields, Desperate Housewives’ Marcia Cross, Charlie’s Angels’ Jaclyn Smith, and former First Lady Barbara Bush. The auction is hoped to raise over $30,000, and more information can be found at www.munchkin.com/projectpink.
