2011 marks a banner year for WhyHunger with the most successful Hungerthon in the annual event’s 26-year history! Songs For Japan Raises $10 Million For Earthquake Victims

Songs For Japan, the unique, star-studded album collection created to help raise money for victims of Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami disasters, continues to benefit the survivors through Japanese Red Cross Society.

Yesterday in Tokyo, senior executives from four major music companies – EMI, Sony Music, Universal Music and Warner Music Group – met with Japanese Red Cross Society Vice President, Yoshiharu Otsuka, to recognise the milestone of $10 million raised and donated from the global sales of Songs For Japan. The occasion was a reception hosted by Frances Moore, chief executive of worldwide recording industry organisation IFPI.

A music industry-wide initiative, Songs For Japan is an unprecedented compilation of 38 major hits and classic tracks, including 21 Billboard Hot 100 hits and five #1s from more than 30 of the biggest names in contemporary music. The collection was rush-released worldwide on March 25 – only 14 days after the earthquake struck Japan – as a digital album via iTunes, followed by the release of a physical two-CD set.

Bruce Springsteen, Jon Stewart and Ricky Gervais will take part in a special charity event in New York next month.

The Bob Woodruff Foundation (BWF) and The New York Comedy Festival (NYCF) will partner for the fifth consecutive year to present Stand Up for Heroes at the Beacon Theatre in New York on Wednesday, November 9th at 8 p.m.

This event supports those who continue to fight for the US’s freedom and helps heal the physical and psychological wounds of war. This event kicks off the New York Comedy Festival, which runs November 9 – 13.

Lady Gaga Honors Clarence Clemons At Charity Event

The late great Clarence Clemons was honored as Big Man of The Year at a special charity ceremony which featured Lady Gaga last week.

Clarence – best known for his work with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band – passed away earlier this year, but his charity legacy rocks on. In 2009, Little Kids Rock created the Big Man of the Year Award to celebrate his giving spirit and the support he showed to children around the world. Each year, Little Kids Rock give the honor to a musician who is passionate about helping the charity provide musical education to school children who would otherwise miss out.

Lady Gaga was on hand at the event in New York on Thursday, October 20, to hand the award to Clarence’s widow, Victoria.

Black Eyed Peas And Sting Raise Millions For Charity

New Yorkers joined together over the weekend to help millions of their less fortunate neighbors.

Robin Hood – New York’s largest private poverty-fighter – announced today that combined VIP tickets sales and donations made via texts from Friday night’s Black Eyed Peas concert in Central Park, donations on robinhood.org as well as ticket proceeds from Sting’s 25th anniversary/60th birthday concert at the Beacon Theatre on Saturday night, raised more than $7 million to fight poverty in New York City. These funds will be earmarked to support food pantries, homeless shelters, health clinics and will provide jobs training for New Yorkers in need throughout the five boroughs.

“This was an amazing weekend of music, and it’s incredibly gratifying to see New Yorkers come together during difficult times to help their neighbors in need,” said David Saltzman, executive director of Robin Hood. “The Black Eyed Peas and Sting have a long history of giving back to their communities and we’re truly honored that they’ve chosen to help the 1.8 million New Yorkers living in poverty through Robin Hood; we hope to do them proud.”

A host of stars – including Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, and Mary J. Blige – helped celebrate Sting’s 60th birthday on Saturday night, and raised $3.7 million for charity in the process.

The stars took part in a massive charity concert at New York’s Beacon Theater in front of an audience that included Trudie Styler, Tom Hanks, Rita Wilson, Jake Gyllenhaal and Melanie Griffith, as well as 32 members of Britain’s Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, who have all completed missions in Afghanistan.

Also appearing on stage at the event were Robert Downey Jr, will.i.am, Chris Botti, Herbie Hancock, Rufus Wainwright, Joe Sumner and Branford Marsalis.

The anniversary fell on the heels of WhyHunger’s 12th annual awards ceremony to honor individuals dedicated to issues surrounding food both nationally and globally.

Clarence Clemons, best known as Bruce Springsteen’s sax player in the E Street Band, has passed away at the age of 69, leaving behind a charity legacy.

Known by his fans as “The Big Man”, Clarence had a heart of gold. He hosted many charity events, including an annual celebrity charity gala and auction for Home Safe’s work improving the lives of children and families, and charity concerts for the Bicol Clinic Foundation.

“Home Safe is close to me, it’s in my neck of the woods and you want to start as close to yourself as possible,” Clarence said in 2010. “It gives you more time to reach out since its right here at home.”

Sting and Trudie Styler hosted the 16th annual Rainforest Foundation benefit concert to celebrate the organization’s 21st anniversary at Carnegie Hall on Thursday night. This year’s performers included Elton John, Lady Gaga, Bruce Springsteen, Debbie Harry, Mary J. Blige and Shirley Bassey.

The event – which has been the Foundation’s main fundraiser since 1989 – was dubbed as an evening of 1980s hits and stars (“Sting told me we’re doing a show of ’80s nostalgia,” said Springsteen. “I said, ’That’s easy! We’re both ‘80s nostalgia!’”). And the concert didn’t let fans down, with Sir Elton covering Madonna’s Material Girl and The Boss singing a version of Bryan Adam’s Cuts Like A Knife. Sting duetted with Lady Gaga on Stand By Me, while Gaga joined Sir Elton for Speechless/Your Song. Sting also joined Mary J. Blige for their 2003 duet Whenever I say Your Name. Both Elton and Sting joined Shirley Bassey for Hey Big Spender, and the evening ended with everyone on stage for Don’t Stop Believing.

Lord of the Rings star Ian McKellen conjured up a little bit of magic for Haiti this week when he collected donations for earthquake victims.

The actor – who played the wizard Gandalf in the films – is currently starring in the stage play Waiting For Godot on the West End in London, and took the time to collect donations from the audience during a recent performance.

Hope For Haiti Now Breaks Charity Records

Friday night’s Hope for Haiti Now telethon, organized by George Clooney, has so far raised more than $57 million for the earthquake relief effort in Haiti.

Besides setting a record for the most money raised by a disaster relief telethon, the charity’s Hope for Haiti album – featuring performances on the telethon — became the largest one-day album pre-order in iTunes history.

As the stars came out and shone for Haiti last night during George Clooney’s Hope For Haiti Now telethon, it was boxing legend Muhammad Ali who spoke loudest about the need for charity in times of hardship.

Appearing on stage in a wheelchair and unable to speak, the former boxer – who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease – looked on as comedian Chris Rock read out a speech he prepared earlier.

“By any name, charity can bring the people of our planet together … charity changes lives and saves lives … we call upon all the good people in every corner of the world to help … please give now,” he said. “In my life I’ve been called by many names. There are many names for the charity of the people of the earth and one of them is Zakat.”

George Clooney Brings Hope To Haiti Tonight

It will be a big night for charity tonight, as George Clooney’s Hope For Haiti telethon hits TV screens across America and around the world.

Hosted by Clooney, Wyclef Jean and Anderson Cooper, the show will feature performances from Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera, Dave Matthews, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder and Taylor Swift in New York, as well as Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J.
