Melissa Gilbert Named As Charity Celebrity Champion

Former Little House On The Prairie star Melissa Gilbert has joined the Partnership for a Drug-Free America as its first ever Celebrity Champion.

The initiative has been launched to coincide with the organization’s new name, The Partnership at Drugfree.org. The new name reflects the nonprofit’s commitment to serving and supporting parents and families.

The change further reflects how the organization has grown since its founding in 1986 as a prevention-focused, anti-drug advertising campaign to a reliable partner and online community for parents and families seeking guidance and support on teen drug and alcohol use.

LTTS Exclusive: Inside A Night To Make A Difference with Host Michelle Vink

Look To The Stars’ lead host, Michelle Vink was on hand as a host of Leeza Gibbons’ A Night To Make A Difference Fundraiser on Oscar night. Read her story below:

“Without hope, life is just not worth living”…

Those were the words from Harvey Milk from the Oscar-winning movie, Milk. Despite the uncertain state of the economy and the lack of faith we keep hearing about on the news, there was an overwhelming resurgence of hopeful optimism at the Oscars this year. Winning storylines like Slumdog Millionaire and Milk captured that very essence.

It is a case of give and take for actress Melissa Gilbert this week, as she follows receiving a humanitarian award with an auction to raise money for children with serious illnesses.

The 43-year-old received the Humanitarian Leadership Award at the 2008 National Hospice Foundation Gala last Friday in Washington, DC. The evening, which featured a silent auction, dinner and party, celebrated some of the people who have lent their support to hospice and palliative care over the last year. Gilbert, who is the board president of the Children’s Hospice & Palliative Care Coalition and the spokesperson of the Partnering for Children campaign, was awarded the accolade in recognition for her work on behalf of children facing life-limiting conditions.

To follow up on the award, Gilbert is auctioning the opportunity to accompany her to a Dodgers vs. Diamondbacks game in Los Angeles on April 24, including the use of a private luxury suite at Dodger Stadium. The package also includes VIP parking for up to 9 cars, food and drinks, personalized photos of Melissa Gilbert, commemorative silver bracelets, and Dodgers memorabilia… a total value of over $6,500!

2007 - The Year The Stars Gave Back

2007 was a year of giving, both on grand and not-so-grand scales. Celebrities from all fields, be it movies, music, sport or general entertainment, showed compassion beyond the call of duty, and in most cases had a lot of fun doing it.

Without a doubt, one of the biggest events of the year was Live Earth in July, where stars new and old shone in all of the corners of the Earth to raise awareness of the plight of the planet. The shows were generally well-received, and led to organizer Al Gore winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

But celebrities also participated in smaller, more personal acts of kindness in 2007. Harrison Ford, Calista Flockhart, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Melissa Gilbert, and Michael Douglas all donated their time to feed the hungry at the Los Angeles Mission, Fran Drescher launched the Cancer Schmancer Movement, and Ewan McGregor visited UNICEF projects during his epic motorcycle trip across Africa.

Celebrities' Festive Gifts

A pledge to walk one of the biggest man-made structures in the world, a successful celebrity auction, a tour of far away places, and a donation of time and energy were just some of the ways celebrities gave to the poor, the sick, and those unable to spend time with their families this Christmas.

Singer Olivia Newton-John met with the founders of Welsh breast cancer charity In The Pink over Christmas to discuss fund raising opportunities, and revealed her plans to walk the length of the Great Wall of China in April. Proceeds from the walk will go to the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Centre in Australia, and the 59-year-old breast cancer survivor will also donate items to In The Pink to auction later in the year.

Meanwhile, socialite Kathy Hilton organized a charity auction over Christmas, featuring a selection of items donated by some of her famous friends. Mel Gibson’s jeans, Tom Cruise’s sunglasses, and an Ocean’s Thirteen script signed by the movie’s stars, including George Clooney and Brad Pitt, raised money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
