Following the huge success of the McCartney family’s Meat Free Monday campaign, the new cookbook launched yesterday and was inspired by the simple idea that going without meat for just one day of the week can make a huge difference to the planet, our health and even our pocket.

The campaign, which was launched in 2009, came about after the United Nations issued a report which stated that the livestock industry as a whole was responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than the whole of the transport sector put together. Meat is in fact responsible for a staggering 18 per cent of the planet’s greenhouse gas emissions.

August 2010 Vogue cover girl Gwyneth Paltrow, supermodel Karlie Kloss, American designer Donna Karan, and celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe were among the superstars who enjoyed the family-friendly event. The celebrity support didn’t stop at the guests who came; over 200 designers including Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Diane von Furstenberg, and Giorgio Armani contributed to the designer garage sale, with prices drastically slashed. Nelson Mandela came out of this area. How can you not invest? I always say even if you can only send two dollars and you don’t think that’s gonna make a difference, trust me, it does make a difference.”

British band Coldplay have donated £1 million to a children’s charity in the UK.

The group has made the donation to Kids Company, a charity that provides practical, emotional and educational support to vulnerable inner-city children and young people, in particular those with severe emotional, behavioral and social difficulties, resulting from significant experiences of trauma and neglect. Actress Gwyneth Paltrow – who is married to Coldplay singer Chris Martin – is also a big supporter of the charity. Last year, she cleaned out her closet for an auction to benefit the charity, and she recently designed a range of clothes to raise money for the organization.

“[Coldplay] were moved by the tough stories they heard and want to be genuine participants,” said charity founder Camila Batmanghelidjh. “I got the feeling the donation was something they had planned from the start of their careers.”
