Coffee and Cookies to Cure Cancer

Nonni’s Biscotti, maker of traditional Italian biscotti, has taken up cause with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists. Nonni’s will auction over 50 coffee mugs, each autographed by a different celebrity, and donate the total proceeds to Komen for the Cure.

Celebrities such as Andie MacDowell, Mimi Rogers, Jennifer Tilly, Montel Williams, James Woods, Sacha Baron Cohen and Lil’ Kim have given their signatures to the mugs for auction. Now, during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the eBay Giving Works site has posted the auction items.

Nancy Brinker created Susan G. Komen for the Cure in honor of her dying sister’s wish to speed up research and, meanwhile, make the treatment process a little more esthetic and feminine friendly. A global breast cancer movement was launched, “fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures.”

Nonni’s Biscotti’s strong connection with women was the motivation to form a partnership with Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Says Nonni’s marketing manager Matt Duffy, “We are proud to help raise funds for research, education, screening and treatment that will hopefully eliminate this disease one day. We hope this charity auction will not only help raise funds, but also increase awareness about breast cancer.”

Nonni’s is also offering pink boxes of biscotti. Customers can enter the UPC code from the box at the Nonni’s website until the end of February, and 75 cents will be donated to Komen for the Cure.

Russell Simmons and Lil' Kim Support Lisa Lopes Orphanage

The Lisa Lopes Foundation is celebrating the grand opening of the Lisa Lopes Rural School and Orphanage with its Celebrity Auction and Fund-raiser this Saturday, August 18. The event will take place at The 40/40 Club in New York, where guests can mingle with Russell Simmons, Lil’ Kim, Flava Flav, JD Williams, Patti LaBelle and more while raising funds for the Lisa Lopes Orphanage in Honduras.

The orphanage provides a healthy home, dental clinic, and free healthcare for twenty abandoned children, ages 2-15. Free on-site schooling is also available for children in the community. Many of the children living in the orphanage have lost their parents to AIDS and/or have been victims of sexual and physical abuse.

Honduras is the poorest country in the Americas, and was devastated by Hurricane Mitch in 1998, after which the number of orphans in Honduras increased considerably. Reputable orphanages and various professionally operated children’s homes are essential to ensuring stability throughout their society.

The Lisa Lopes Foundation (LLF) was developed in 2003 by Lisa’s mother, Wanda Lopes-Colemon, brother Ronald Lopes and family friend Anashay Murphy. The Foundation was inspired by Lisa’s dream of building a children’s home on some land she purchased in Honduras. Shortly after revealing her plans to her family, Lisa passed away in an auto accident in Honduras. The family established the Lisa Lopes Foundation to bring her dream to fruition. Four years later they opened Lisa’s Hogar De Amor (Home of Love), a 10,000 sq. ft. orphanage. The LLF also provides teen programs in Georgia.

There’s more to Grammy Award winner Lil’ Kim than music; she is also an established philanthropist. Often taking time to give back, she understands her social responsibility to the community and is committed to using her influence to inspire people.

The singer’s Lil’ Kim Cares Foundation has announced that Lil’ Kim is teaming up with MusiCares to raise funds through a silent auction being held at the Grammy’s On The Hill ceremony. The ceremony will take place in Washington, DC on September 5, 2007 at the Willard Continental.

The Grammy’s On The Hill ceremony presents awards to outstanding individuals who have improved the environment for the creative community. Among the award recipients are performers Missy Elliott, Natalie Cole, Gloria Estefan, Vince Gill and Kelly Clarkson, senators Lamar Alexander, Hillary Clinton and John McCain, representative Mary Bono, and congressman John Conyers.

Tafia L. Allah-Pringle, the publicist for Lil’ Kim Cares stated that, “Lil’ Kim has added her celebrity to the MusiCares Foundation. She joins a list of celebrities in donating a few of their collector’s items for this year’s Silent Auction to benefit MusiCares which is the charitable arm of the GRAMMYs that provides a safety net of critical services and programs to members of the music community facing a medical, financial, or personal crisis.”

Lil’ Kim Cares Foundation focuses on programs that provide positive impacts in communities worldwide. The Foundation raises funds, resources and awareness for national programs that assist with issues of homelessness, HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness, transitional living, child neglect and violence against women in impoverished neighborhoods.
